Strength:

Looks, sound quality, cool blue light, bass output.

Weakness:

Remote, no Optical CD input...

This reciever is rather impressive for the price. I paid $855AUD. There aren't many other reciever that can compete with Sony's STR-DE835 in the same price range. And, it has 100w output. WOW! I will never ever give a product 5 stars as there is ALWAYS room for improvement. A strong 4....

Strength:

Good visual display, feature-rich

Weakness:

Concept of THD running close to 1%

I wanted to address some of the complaints from the Hiss Police -- You know who you are. . . turning up the volume with no input to detect the dreaded white noise. Why should I care? I generally like to listen to movies and music and have never sat around listening to hiss for fun. I am man enough to admit that I just cannot hear the distortion. Besides, distortion is a fact of life for reproduced music. I'm very happy with this equipment in my small apartment. Twelve-year old Polk towers up front, Polk center channel, small Polk powered subwoofer and M-1 rears. Home theater sound is crisp and lifelike. I agree with others that the soundfields are overkill. For movies, I just settled on one customized sound field and for music I chose Small Hall and Jazz with appropriate customization. Anyone who complains about the remote on this unit should experience the brick-sized piece of garbage that is the companion to the Denon 3300. At least the Sony is somwhat intuitive. Anyway, the unit replaced a Denon Pro Logic receiver that required servicing and I had no patience to wait for the repair. Also, I wanted to experience the Dolby Digital with the new Sony DVD player. Maybe I could have shopped around some more but I highly recommend this receiver as an extremely good value (it got a high rating from Consumer Reports too, but, of course, consider that source).

Lot of options.

Weakness:

Iam yet to think off.

I think this is a great product. But I would like to know from u all as to how to make use of the SURROUND MODE function of this receiver. To be more precise:-

When I press the surround button. It says 'surround not in use'.Looking at the manual it says that the input should be in surround mode.I bought a CD recorded in surround mode and tried again. It still said 'Surround not in use'.I tried playing a DVD but still the same result.Would somebody be knowing a solution to this problem???Also i believe there is a indicator which is called multichannel decoding which lights up under some circumstances? Can somebody tell me when does it happen???

all help will be greatly appreciated.

Strength:

Great value - very good first time HT unit

Weakness:

Remote as others have stated

Unit does run hot - I purchased a 4" fan from Radio Shack and have it plugged into a switched plug on the receiver moves air across the unit from the back. Not sure but I really think the sound output is much crisper now and it is a lot cooler.
Just for your info I am using two JBL 8" subs one up front and one behind the sofa - really does fill in the room nicely.
I am also using coax input from DVD unit(S530D-working with no problems)instead of optical if there is a differance I can not tell but it is suppose do be better based on expert opinion. Can't go wrong with this one!

Strength:

Price, Dolby Digital/DTS, features

Weakness:

Remote buttons for selecting source

Graet value - woeks well with my other sony components (dvd, vhs &TV) - the remote works everything. Yes those buttons are dificult to read but once you know their location its not such a big deal - i've put my other remotes in a drawer!

The sound is great and with dobly digital & dts at this price I just cant find anything to complain about.

By the way, it looks good too.

Strength:

Features, inputs and outputs

Weakness:

Sound, Remote, equalizer for bass only goes down to 100Hz

These DE line receivers are a disgrace to all other Sony products. I have heard some good things about there DB line though. I bought this at Circuit City On sale for $364, not bad since it is usually $399. I guess if your going from a small boombox to this you won't miss the bass too much. The eq for bass only goes down to 100Hz for boosting, the eq needs to go down to at least 60Hz. My very old Marantz rated at 80 watts blew this piece of junk away, but it is a Marantz and that is like comparing a Ford to Lexus. I took the Sony back and got my money back.

Strength:

Lots of feature DTS, DD etc.

Weakness:

Very bad remote, high THD .8% in surrond mode compared to Yamaha, Pioneer Elite etc.

I am satisfied with this product. Especially It sound very great with the Cambridge 408 Sat/Sub system I have.
I am very unhappy with the remote though. I cannot control even the Toshiba TV, Panasonic VCR and Toshiba DVD I have with this remote. Also the color is not that great of the buttons. I am pleased with the surround sound modes. My favorite is the Cinema Mode B. Overall, this receiver is well worth the price. It has enough inputs and output and DTS capability only found with expensive Receiver. I liked the Pioneer Elite VSX-11 but the best price I could get on that was $465. I got the Sony STR-835, the 408 Sound works and a Samsung DVD-709 (Free with the deal) from
hifi.com for $675, which I think was a very good deal. My Receiver is not running too hot because I have kept it under very good ventilation after reading a lot of reviews posted
here. Overall the system sound very good with DTS and DD movies and OK+ for Music.

Strength:

DD,DTS,great sound,

Weakness:

remote

I`ve been using this receiver for over a month and i must say that sony got it right this time. The first day i used it the sound was okay, but once i adjusted the eq, the sound really come to life. I have`nt had the overheating problem that alot of reviewers have experienced. Many of my friends have units that cost 3 times as much and the sony blows them away.I`m not saying this is the best receiver made, but dollar for dollar it is hard to beat. Once i buy some quality speakers, this unit will sound even better.

Lot's of Bells and Whistles

Weakness:

Worst remote in the history of remotes, Get's very hot within 2 hours in DD Movie mode

Didn't know what i wanted when i walked into the local stereo store( That sounds like the beginning of a Paul Simon tune) . The nice salesman said this model was by far his best seller, so after haggling i picked it up for $525 CDN. I'm glad to say i've made the right choice as far as i can see. Great sounding system, Got Paradigms all around and the only dissapointment is that it gets very hot. I'll try the fan thing and see if it works.

Strength:

Plenty of power, wide range of sound fields, and good looking.

Weakness:

Green glow in the dark buttons on remote with white lettering.

I purchased this unit from Best Buy approximately 9 months ago and paid $399.99. I have been extremely pleased with it to date and have had no problems. Currently I have it pushing 2 Eosone RSF 600's and 1 Eosone center, RSC 300. This receiver is clear and powerful. I have heard others speak of this unit getting hot as did my sales person. I've noticed it get pretty warm but so far no problems relating to it. The receiver has plenty of inputs which is nice. My last Sony receiver didn't even have 1 sub output. I am very happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone that wants a quality, reliable, powerful receiver.
