Strength:

plenty of power, hookups, lots of features to play with while listening to music, seperate cntr. rear, sub volume

Weakness:

none.. thing i thought were missing i didn't need any way give the receiver time master first then cut it down

I brought the STR-DE 935 home and connected the infinity RS 3 speakers I bought, instant butt kicking sound you can here out in the street, 4 months went by and I learned the eq witch made it even better. then...... I bought 2 infinity RS 5's front speakers. 1 infinity CC 3 center speaker. 1 acoustic research 120 watt powered 12''subwoofer , I then used the infinity RS 3's for rears and now its almost perfect I'm going to buy one more 12'' sub to even the bass. my Hughes dss receiver gives perfect input to the Sony receiver witch provides clear, powerful pitcher frame shaken sound, no hiss or dist. my cd-player is old, 1988 ModL JVC, I plan to up grade to a Sony cx450 cd changer, and dvd player when funds become available and this review can help me choose. the parametric eq. can make, brake, solve and cure any speaker noise, you can't blame the receiver for bad input. this unit is an A/V receiver not a pro-amplifier for DJ speakers with the right speaker this unit will impress.

Strength:

Versatility, Sound Fields, Equalizer control for 5.1 Channels

Weakness:

Some bleed through from other sound sources (if they're on)

Good reciever with lots of options. I've read a lot of complaints below concerning the remote. While I can see that It's somewhat more complcated than what one might normally be used to, once I did learn its operation I found it an extremely funtional unit. The controlability of the sound field qualization when playing 5.1 decoded recordings is very nice. Overall awsome sound when its set-up correctly. While I'm sure there are better recievers out there, you'd be hard pressed to find a better overall value.

Strength:

Great sound and flexibility for the money.

Weakness:

Difficult to use the remote for first time users.

This, in my opinion, is one of the best budget receivers out on the market right now. You can't beat all the features it comes down with for such a small price tag. Other receivers with similiar features and flexibily usually cost way more. The only downfall is the remote. I have no problems using it, but when I have company over it's like I have to teach them to use it. Also, it's very annoying having to open and close the flap on the remote to perform such small tasks like changing the channels, etc. The 2-way feature is a nice concept and it does perform fine but the remote needs a major overhaul in design. Other than that the receiver performs fine and I would recommend it to anyone who is on a tight budget.

Strength:

Excellent Sound
Lots of Features

Weakness:

rear and Center speaker connections should be like the L & R.

I really like this reciever. It has enough sound fields to keep you occupied for days, and they really work. The Arena field is awsome. Produces a great sound....it brought my Mission 731i's to new life.

Strength:

Price dts and sony Digital Cinema Sound

Weakness:

None noted as yet

With 110Wx5 in surround mode (Dolby Digital or DTS Pro Logic
27DSP soundfields) 5.1channel, 24-bit for surround decoding;
32-bit for Digital Cinema sound it unleashes a higher level of realisum and detail for a small price in todays audio
receiver market. The STR-DE935 also has multi-room stero
output with independent source selection. There are also A/V
jacks on the front of the receiver for games of camcorders. With all of the features and a dam cool remote it is hard
to beat this receiver. You could spend more but the $1,000
dollar receivers are out of my price range. I enjoy this one just as well. I paid $398.00 look around most are chargeing $499.00 Cirucit City,Best Buy,Crutchfield were all
$100.00 more shopp on line or around town. I got mine at
BrandMart USA in South Florida. Over all this receiver is a
great value and with a DVD you can start enjoying home
Cinema. My DVD is also sony DVP530 and works well with the
sony receiver. The STR-DE 935 remote control controls the
DVD. Good luck and enjoy if you buy. I do

Strength:

Very Clean Sound, dual Sub pre-amp outs, dolby digital included, ability to use different sound souce with video settings.

Weakness:

Remote is confusing and absurd

I dont know what that other gentleman was doing wrong, but I have not noticed any static , bleeding, or whine. Overall, this is the best receiver i have used in quite some time. This unit has everything you could want and then some. Worth noting is the abilit to use a 2nd sound souce with any of the video settings (i.e. you can attach your game console to a video input and listen to a CD at the same time).

My only gripe is that Sony no longer uses "learning" remotes with their receivers. This remote is *universal* which means it uses codes to identify othe devices. I have found that this is not the best way to support other devices with this remote. A remote that learns commands would have been much better.

Strength:

DD & DTS, remote

Weakness:

None

Great receiver. I had the hissing in the rears when I first hooked it up. Took it to get serviced at the Sony center and received it back two weeks later, it is now working like a champ.
I have no complaints except the remote does have a delay and
the macro list are not working for me. I am still playing with it so eventually I'll figure it out.

Strength:

Plenty of hookup options. Great sound. Nice looking.

Weakness:

I wish the remote was more user friendly. No s-video fot the sat tv.

I think this receiver is great. The remote is kind of lame. The receiver has great power and plenty of features. It does have to many sound fields. I had this hooked up and rockin in 10 minutes. I don't know if I was impressed or not with the speaker setup. I bought the jbl SCS125a speaker system, hooked it up. Boy was I impressed. These little speakers kick some ass. I was on a tight budget and thats why I have these components. Purchase at BB for about $650 total. Both open box specials. The speaker were missing the cables that plug into the satellites. If anyone knows where I can get these, please email me.

Strength:

High power, very flexible, DTS, tons of soundfields, remote is very flexible, nice Digital Decoding blue light.

Weakness:

Remote, High THD .8% other are .05% or less!

I bought this receiver as my first Home Theatre amp. It really is great for the features that it packs. The remote is cool in that it is very flexible for operating other equipment and useful for changing soundfields, but it sucks for just about everyting else, as it is difficult to get it to turn on the amp on occassions and it is very difficult to tailor levels from it. Also, it has pretty high THD numbers which were really not that big of a deal to me until the day I heard the ES. Before, I used to have to put the subtitles on for Saving Private Ryan DTS, but on the ES, I could hear it very clearly...WITH THE SAME EXACT SPEAKERS!!! I guess that's why the ES is 3X more expensive! This amp is good for those who are not audiophiles or audiophiles in training. To me, it was a step on my way to cleaner, smoother sound. This amp just tries too hard to get everything out to the listener, that it creates a jumble of sounds that sound ok, but it's not like the on/off clarity of the ES. Basically, the speakers are off until somebody talks and when they are done, the turn of again. It's that clear. To sum up, this is a good amp for the money, but know that there are FAR better amps available, so if you want to go HiFi, use this as a stepping stone to get the amp that you REALLY want!
I'll give it 5 stars for the value that you get with this receiver and 4 stars for overall value since this model has been discontinued and you can pick it up dirt cheap and retain all the things that made it a good value in the first place making it an even better buy. For the money, I think this is a solid receiver that is worth the money if all you're looking for is a solid home theatre with some neat features, not a Uber-Audiophile system.
