Strength:

Price, Power, and Overall Performance.

Weakness:

It gets pretty hot.

I find it funny that most people who write reviews about this product complain about the remote. Your inability to learn how to function a piece of equipment does not make it a bad product.. It just makes you stupid.

Strength:

S-video inputs, 110 X 5, DD, DTS, Source Naming,
Multiple Sub outs

Weakness:

Heats up, remote learning curve.

I just got bought this receiver 2 weeks ago, and so far
so good. I did detect a faint buzz in rear speaker when adjusting low volume levels. I wish I hadn't read these reviews, I would have never noticed it. Other than that
I feel this receiver is a fine choice for any HT.

The features on this receiver are countless, and it's a hell of a deal for the price. For anyone who want's
to gets into DD & DTS at a low price, this is the way to go. The remote takes some time to get used to (manual is not the greatest) but all in all it’s a pretty slick rig.

Go Sorny!!

Strength:

good price, finally a sony that remembers the eq/SF settings for each input

Weakness:

only 2 SVideo inputs and no SVideo switching...piece of SH!T remote

Well I got screwed on my 915 so I pawned it off to my brother-n-law. Actually I really liked the 915 except it only had 1 dolby digital input and no SVideo. The 935 is great except for a few small missing features that drive me crazy. 1)Only SVideo on Video1 and DVD. That would be fine except that Optical inputs reside on DVD and SAT. So for my SAT I either have to sacrafice SVideo or Dolby Digital. 2)Svideo switching is missing. 3)The POS remote is worthless. I see the new 945 added learning capability to the remote that may be better. Aside from the inputs and remote issues sound and feature wise this has been a good unit.

Strength:

A lot of inputs, maybe too many. Good power. Good versitility.

Weakness:

Maybe too many settings, could get confusing. The remote.

This is my first Sony receiver. I decided to upgrade to DD, DTS and found this receiver on a HiFi.com auction. For $210 I couldn't pass it up. The receiver has a bunch of inputs, including phono (long live vinyl), which I'll probably use only a couple of them, but they are there if you need them. It also has a lot of tone settings for each channel which I found a little confusing (what ever happened to the old bass, mid and treble pots?). I think I have it set right now, but only after a lot of tweaking. I have not had any of the hissing problems that others have experienced but I do find it runs a little warm, but I guess that's the norm these days with these units that draw over 300 watts when being worked. Some people get caught up in the so-called ratings game but I figure that if a unit stays under 1% THD, you probably can't tell the difference anyway. Just keep the receiver within it's limits and not to try to get more out of it than it's designed to do. The remote is a challange, but once you have it figured out, it works okay. So far I'm very pleased with this receiver.

I have just shipped my 935 back to J&R because of noted static in the rear channels(Energy Take 2's). I am upgrading to the STR-DB930($475 delivered). The 935 has good features for the money, but research the STR-DB930 before purchasing the STR-DE935. I probably would have kept the 935 if I did not receive a defective unit. Decent unit other than bad quality control of new product

Just purchased this unit and the initial hook-up was straight forward. I'm still playing with the various audio adjustments, assigning the station call letters to the FM pre-sets, and learning to use the remote. The only negative thus far is the lack of a tape monitor loop. I miss this since I use a BBE sound processor. Otherwise, for the price of $499 at Best Buys, it seems to be a very nice A/V Receiver. I will post another review in a few weeks or month depending if there are more pros or cons to be shared with Audio Review audience. So far, I will give this unit *****.

Traded in my STR 825 due to overheating problems. Picked up the 935 at J&R for $410. Burned in the reciever for about 6hrs with various CD's and DVD's. Did notice the reciever did get a bit hot but it is true POWER = HEAT. No hissing or crackling have been detected yet and the reciever delivers robust sound at all levels. After reading many reviews I was almost convinced to trade up to the
333ES, but I gave the reciever the benefit of the doubt and it delivered quite well. For the money you cannot beat this reciever. The remote eats batteries there is no way around this, so I utilize the remote from my 550D DVD player as much as possible. 4 stars due to remotes large battery appetite.

I agree with Gary from PA. I bought this thing and I HAVE noticed some crackling in my rear speakers ONCE and it was on a DVD at the begining and it was one of the 1st DVD's that I played on it. Needless to say once th movie started the noise was gone. Mainly do to my tweaking of the settings getting it where I wanted it. I am overly pleased with this. It is a vast improvement over my str-de615. I got it from Best Buy for $479 now I am looking online to find the best price on one that I can take bake to BB. (I was leary of the quality after listening to the posts here.) I gave it a 4 cause a 5 is rare and reserved for the truly best. I feel I got what I wanted so I am overly pleased with the choice.

Had my 935 for about a month now and have been nothing but pleased. In my opinion its the best receiver you can get for the money. I got mine for 380 delivered from soundcity.com. As far as performance goes it does a great job.For music its clear as can be. The Digital Surround Sound it simply breathtaking. Good Clarity on every channel. Some people have complained about a hissing in the rear channels, but I have not noticed it. I personally like the remote. It takes a while to learn, but any remote that is universal will. The number of inputs/output are tough to beat you can hook up just about anything and still have space for more. The reciever does run a little warm, but that is common thing anytime you go with a high power receiver.(power=heat) The heat sink in the unit is huge so as long as you leave the unit where it can get air it will be fine and if you're that concerned about it go buy a small fan to blow air through it.

I have seen this receiver take a lot of criticism in the reviews here since I bought mine, but a lot of it is unjustified. Sure this isnt the best receiver on the market, but the best are high dollar receivers. I wont say that this is absolute the best receiver in the $400 dollar range, but it can definitely stake a claim at it. Another thing to remember is that this is a mass produced unit, meaning that occasionally a bad unit may slip through QC, but the number is small. Bottom Line if your looking for a really good receiver in the $400 range I strongly recommend the Sony str 935

My system consists of:
fronts - Infinity RS5
center - Infinity CC3
rears - Infinity RS3
Sony Strde 935 receiver
Panasonic DVD A320

I recently returned the str-de935 for the following reasons:(1)I was very unsatisfied with the remote, not only was it a pain to figure out, it eats batteries like they're going out of style.
(2)There was definite hissing in the rear and center speakers due to the receiver, not the speakers or the cables.
(3)It gets too hot, and it has been my experience with stereo equipment that when things get too hot, systems break and components go bad.
-These reasons alone prompted me to return the model and buy something else. While these may not be problems for everyone, they happened to me. However, if you are someone who likes a challenge, doesn't like surround sound, and hates having anything on for more than 3 hours, this receiver offers all the bells and whistles you could ever want. I opted for something better.
