This receiver is perhaps one of the most annoying of any reciever I have ever bought in my whole life. The sound quality is good and it is powerful and it looks cool when you show it off to your friends. HOwever, trying to do anything with that god damn remote and you will get so mad you think steam will jet out of your ears. I nearly threw that egg remote across the room but did not remembering that replacement cost is around 200 dollars. I ended up selling it at a profit which didn't make me feel any better because of the ulcer that this reciever gave me. Don't get this reciever! |

I have had this unit now for a few years, and was quite happy w/ it until my 2 year old broke the remote control egg thing. (sigh). over 200 to replace it....Get Real. Well, at this point it looks as though i am in need of a new reciever. |

I purchased this unit about a year ago. The only real complaint about it is a major one. The remote (black egg) is a total piece of crap! I can only get about 15 feet from it's antenna, tonight it finally succumed to it's being thrown against the wall many times. Looks like it's time to get a new RCVR and NOT a Sony this time..... |

Strength:
CHEAP, LOUD, FUN, CHEAP (did I say that?) Dolby 5.1
Weakness:
Egg remote control, Surround modes not that configurable. Outdated This reciever rocks, I thought the egg was anoying but sorta kinda not really got used to it. Now I found this webpage and it will be around for a long time to come. http://web2.airmail.net/will/str0g3.html |

Strength:
Remote control programming. Turns my equipment on and off with one button.
Weakness:
They don't tell you how to do macros well, you have to find out on your own(I probably spent 5 hours programming it the first day. I'm with you, Giancarlo. I LOVE this thing. The Key is placement of the antenna and how you hold the egg. My egg works pefectly. I'm running out of remote code room. I wish the SUB menu had more room for custom commands. I am looking for a good used one so I can have a second. |

Strength:
S-Video x4 (Including Front) , Good bass Reproduction, Sleek Design, Good Power.
Weakness:
TV on most of the time, However you can change this setting, too dependant on remote but once you get the hang of it it's fine, Rear Hiss in Surround (But I have a small enclosure). I don't understand why all of these people are whining so much. I have used this receiver for 2 years and it hasn't given me any problems. I purchased it used and it is still fine. Remote has a small learning curve and then it is easy, people want things too easy today. Great power for my Klipsch Cornwalls, Center is a little weak though. Soft rear re-production but simply upgrade your speakers to one's w/ 8 inch woofers. DO NOT USE THIS WITH YOUR CRAPPY BOSE SYSTEMS, this receiver was meant for real speakers. Personally, i think the STR-G3 has great features and sound. I purchased my Sony from J&R also, the the 5.1 dolby digital, all of it's S-LINK capabilities is so true and rich, I have never encountered a problem with the eggshell remote. Friends have been trying to buy it from me for the last 2 years now, even though they don't know that I only paid $200 for it they have been offering me much more but I will never let it go, "IT'S MY FIRST SONY". |

At least my receiver is now working properly. After all, I bought an equalizer (Audio Source EQ-14) and fixed the problem of the lack of balance control for the receiver. Second, I had an eternal fight with the remote control, it usually was not able to work! Well, what I did was take my time and move the antenna up and down until I got a really good performance (reception area), and this system now works good; it does not mean that it is perfect, sometimes it does not work, but I accept that because of what I am going to tell you now: Normally, my whole system (Sony CDP-525 CD player, EQ, TV and STR-G3) is turned on at least 15 hours a day; I sleep, study, eat, and so on listenig to music. At least this receiver, although not a superb one, give me what I want, and the main problem of the antenna was (I hope) resolved; it looks nice too. I first gave it a three star rating, but after one year of reliable use, I'll give it four stars. Thank you. |
