Strength:

Price, lots of features. power per channel. looks cool. GREAT sound

Weakness:

The technicians had to be drunk making such a remote.
need external processor for dts and digital sound

I wondered what to buy, this receiver, some other technics, or some denon. First, the denon made music sound like in a tin can. The other technics could be great, ie 930, 730, but this one was the winner at that price. The sound is really clear, and i don't think you'll find a reciever that matches this at this price!!!

Gets a little hot, but thats usual.

Get this thing! you won't be dissappointed!

Strength:

Smooth sweet clear sound with good bass & treble

Weakness:

Remote

I bought this on the basis of a review of the SAX 6 review in Stereophile Home Theater. I use Bi Wired Vandersteens 2CE's & they sound great with this. Good bass & smooth treble. No harshness for a buget Recever. Recently tried a well rated budget receiver, but had to return it. Lacked bass & smooth treble. Will wait until DA10 is on sale to replace. Teccnics has something with the TAKE Capacitors.

not high current

just to let you all know the sa-ax7 has been changed to the new da10n modle and sells for 800 american. you can get the sf-dx7 for 398. the sf-dx7 is the ax7 and the 500 digital processor for dd/dts. the da10n just adds the 2 for 1 unit.

Weakness:

Poor display volume indication.Cheap remote control.
100 watts RMS power is at 6 ohms impedance.

Very good receiver for the price, here in argentina is not so cheap because tax and overseas ship. Anyway is a great
purchase. I'm loocking for a Technics TX-50 and Yamaha
CX2 and MX2 preamplifier and power amp to upgrade.

Strength:

Versatility: 100wx6 (includes a powered and non-powered sub output), super clean audio output, accurate DTS reproduction. Cooling Fan to prevent overheating at high volumes. VGCA circuitry

Weakness:

None for my applications

I have owned this unit for about three years now, using it for 4-5 hours every day. I currently run a VCR, DVD Player, Digital Cable, Computer, CD Player w/ Optical Out/ Cassette Deck, and Television through this unit. The use of the external decoder (SH-AC500D)allows for multiple digital sources all controlled from one location. One thing to note is the separate remote needed for the external decoder. A minor inconvenience to an otherwise outstanding unit.

When choosing this model, I was comparing it to the Harmon Kardon AVR-85, and a couple of Onkyo Receivers (who's model numbers I cannot remember). At the time, the AVR-85 came with a $1500.00 price tag, and did not include the ability to decode DTS 5.1. Comparable Onkyo units lacked on power output and had limited inputs. The SF-DX7 had a $700 price tag, 100w x 6ch output power, AC3 AND DTS 5.1 Decoding capability, VGCA (a neat feature that allows far more customization of sound to match room acoustics than any other receiver available), Binding Post inputs, a cooling fan for optimal air flow, and cool front-mounted blue accent lights. Overall, a better deal for the money, as far as flexibility and features were concerned.

It wasn't until I listened to the unit on my home theater speakers, that I fell in Love. I own one of only three sets of DCM Time Window 7's in the Wilmington, NC area. Each cabinet is a studio quality monitor housing Dual 9" woofers, dual 6.5" midranges with .75" Dome tweeters, superimposed in a coaxial configuration, directly over the midranges for point-source accuracy. They also feature a time/phase-equalized crossover, and rear-firing .75" dome tweeter for increased spacial separation, and handle an incredible 700w of input power. At $3200/pair, these speakers were far above the competition as far as accuracy and bass response in this price range.

I listened to each receiver I was considering. Connections were made from the source units to the speakers using 12awg oxygen-free speaker cable, and Line-Balanced Monster RCA's were used to connect the CD Player to each receiver. The Harmon Kardon did fairly well, as did the Onkyos. The SA-AX7 however, just seemed to outperform them both. The level of clarity and clean bass response was exceptionally impressive. The sound seemed tighter, and more accurate, with far cleaner midrange tones than the AVR-85 seemed to have. The SA-AX7 shines particularly well when broadcasting DTS 5.1. Even at low volume settings, with no subs, this unit puts out an impressively clear, and strong bass signal that has surprised me on more than one occasion.

I had an opportunity to audition the Harman Kardan AVR-7000a and Onkyo TXDS787 receivers recently. If this unit should fail, I would certainly consider the AVR-7000a as a replacement, however, one should note the $1199.00 price tag.

I would say that for the money, you could not find a more versatile or cleaner-sounding receiver than the SA-AX7. It's a shame that Technics seems to have abandoned their high end line of Home Theatre receivers for the more budget-priced receivers consumers can find at places such as Best Buy or Circuit City.

Strength:

Still going strong and continuing to deliver the goods after a lot of use.

Weakness:

See earlier review

After about two years of living with this unit, I have decided to post a follow-up review hailing the versatility and performance of this unit.

I have since upgraded my fronts and center channel to Paradigm Atoms and a CC-170. This speaker ensemble is terrific and blows away the JBL N24's I previously used. I have since hooked up the JBL N24s to my computer through a Pioneer Prologic receiver.

The Technics SA-AX7 serves as the receiver in my main system. I currently have the unit performing the audio tasks of two VCRs, a DVD player, a cassette deck, a phonograph, a CD player, a Sega Dreamcast, and my computer. I use this receiver about 4 hours every day and it has not broken down at all since I bought it. The blue lights still work and have not yet burned out.

Strength:

Clean sound. (only .05% THD in stereo VGCA mode, SAME AS SONY STR-V555ES!) More than enough power for a normal size room. Easy to use. Sturdy build.

Weakness:

None noteable at this price, but I was a little dissapointed the cool blue bar isn't on the gold model.

I purchased this reciever at the beginning of this year with the intention of hooking it up to a DVD player with a decoder for my first home theater setup. I was immediately impressed with the quality of this machine after opening the box and leafing through the manual. I have taken advantage of it's bi-amp capabilities as well as it's VGCA option (Variable Gain Control). It's a very impressive little reciever for the money. It has no problems keeping clean at high volume and has plenty of power. I agree with everyone else that the remote leave much to be desired, but that's certainly replaceable if it really bothers you. The AX7 with decoder package comes with a much better remote. I recommend this reciever to anyone looking for a budget reciever to use in a home theater or use it's great stereo mode for good 2 channel sound. Pair it with the DVD-A10 and you have a great system for not a whole lot of dough.

Everyone that complains about the amplifier's lack of power must remember that the 100wx6 is for 6 ohm speakers. You probably have 8 ohm speakers so of course it will not be as loud.

Strength:

Everything about it to the last detail

Weakness:

nothing at all

This is an awesome receiver. I don't know the other people got this receiver for so cheap because is an awesome receiver. I paid $350 and that is well worth it. The sounds are as good as my harman/kardon, denon, and my nakamichi and blew the Sony and Kenwood away. The sound is such a sweet tone that it sends tingling down my spine. I love this receiver and have nothing else to say. Get this receiver you want good sound for music and movies not to mention a sleek look.
