Remote is too basic, should have Coaxial Digital Input, needs learning remote with same features as the Reciever.

All round Great Performer, Natural Clean Easy Listening Sound that is not overdone, I run it with a Sony DVD700S SACD Player with Monster cabling, so is making the Reciever produce the best sound it can do, which is amazing for the price, definately matches 2 channel amps of around 3/4 of the price, which is rare.

I bought this one to replace an integrated stereo amplifier, because I wanted an upgrade to a home cinema system. Reviews were quite enthousiastic about this component and the price looked OK. As to home cinema, it's all right, as far as action movies and their likes. I'm not that happy with two channel reproduction, probably because it was preceeded by a Rotel amp (RA840). There's power enough, but I miss musicality and definition at low levels. Somehow it doesn't sound attractive, dull. What I cannot understand is how Technics can deliver a receiver with DVD connection and forget this source on the remote control. I know everyone complains about the remote, but not being able to select a source is strange and unpractical.

Wanted to update my review after owning this receiver for almost a year.As stated earlier I bought this receiver for a spare and had not,until recently,used it for DD playback.Wired the receiver to my friends Klipsch HT system using a cheap DVD player with no built-in decoders. After an hour of cussin''and manual reading finally thought that DTS & bitstream hadn''t been turned on in DVD player.BOOM! The receiver sounds great.Amazing power and good sound.Previously had used this receiver only for occasional 2-channel stereo listening at home and was impressed by the sound of the receiver,and I was equally impressed with its DTD/DD performance.For the price I paid for the piece it is an impossible bargain to match.I therefore recommend it highly.

Remote lacks digital/analog switch, VGCA switch, CD/DVD tray eject, and CD pause buttons. Lowest setting for bass filter is 100Hz.

I have had this receiver for about 9 months and could not be happier with the performance. I don''t think I could have done better for 3 times the price. I use it 95% for music, 5% HT. The bi-wire capability and VGCA provide amazingly clean sound. I am downmixing AC-3/DTS to two channels, and have felt no compelling need to add center and surround speakers, though I will eventually. Dialog is always firmly centered, soundtrack and effects sound clear. I can''t ask for more, especially at the price paid. Heat is not the problem everyone makes out. The fan comes on between 9 and 10 o''clock position, depending on bass output, and cools things down. I have the receiver on a shelf with good space to either side, and back but only 3/4" on the top. Many days it runs 4-6 hours, and has never gotten so hot that it could not be touched, though it does warm the shelf above. Get real, things with output measured in watts (like lightbulbs) put out heat. If you can find one of these, or this year''s model, the SA-DA15, do not hesitate to purchase it.

lack of pre-outs for an external amp, music quality (although not bad, it leaves a lot to be desired), could use more inputs (conponent vid, coax digital in, any digital out)

From a "bang for your buck" perspective, there is really no receiver that comes remotely close (in this price range at least). This receiver excels in surround sound formats (if you can, demo this unit with star wars episode 1 and you''ll see what I''m talking about) I plan on upgrading very shortly, but am excited to move this baby into my bedroom for movie only use. For music, I would look elsewhere though. Not that it''s all that bad, it just nowhere near what you can get from quality seperates. I find it has a bit to much backround noise and can''t handle the power output that my speakers require (technics says it rated 100 wpc, but that''s in 6 ohm loads. Try more like 75 wpc). Then again, what can expect for $200. I would have liked to see pre-outs for an external amp. I did however see a remarkable inprovement when I bi-wired my speakers using both the A and B outputs (which I guess also could be considered bi-amped, albiet a less then ideal bi-amp setup) and would highly recommend it to anyone with compatible speakers. Net net, this will be a great budget receiver for anyone interested in both HT and stereo playback, but if you are only intered in 2 channel audio, look elsewhere. Oh, regarding the heat, I would recommend using this unit in an open air rack. I also have a small external fan cooling it aswell, although I''m not sure it''s needed (better safe than sorry)

What a great reciever. I am one of those people who always wants to upgrade, I bought this receiver as a replacement for a JVC RX-6000 which I thought to be decent. What was I thinking, this technics just blows the JVC out of the water. There was so much information missing from the surround channels of the JVC it was rediculous, even the center channel I discovered was not as clear as it should have been. I could not beleive I had been listening to such garbage for 8 months. When I bought the JVC I was looking for strictly a Home Theater receiver. When I bought the Technics I was still into home theater more than anything else, but that has changed and it''s all because of the exceptional quality of the Technics. Music sounds unbelievable, there was all sorts of things I was not hearing in my music before. I am a huge fan of the human voice and acoustic material. This receiver does justice to any audio source you throw at it. Any receiver can sound good listening to rap, but throw some Diana Krall(DTS) or Eagles(DVD-DTS) at it and your jaw will drop! As if I need to say it but what a great deal. I was going to buy a H/K 310 receiver from the local best buy for $500 but this receiver surpasses the H/K for $270 less. I know that the retail was about the same but I still would have paid retail if I had to, regardless of the name. Only a moron would pay more money for less performance just so a different name would appear on a component. I can''t forget to mention the beautiful finish on this thing. The first component visitors notice is this receiver, just as it should be. Note: Mate this receiver to a good set of speakers, it is a must to get the full benefit of the clean powerful amplifier section in this unit.

Will Literally burn your hand from the heat is produces

Can any company get the digital receivers right? Although this still has the strengths I pointed out below, it literally can burn the skin off your hand from the heat it produces on top. I have nothing placed on top of the machine and there is plenty of breathing space for it, but my TV stand is warm on the bottom of the top shelf from the heat. I placed my hand on the top of the receiver and if I had kept my fingers on there long enough, the skin would have melted to it. Back to the store this one goes. I don't know what to get for the same price. I think I may just keep the Dolby Pro-logic receiver I have and to hell with it.

Bi-amped, DD + DTS built in, sound in stereo mode is excellent for a receiver in this price range.

Remote, Remote, Remote. Many of the options and settings can only be adjusted on reciever itself.

I was lucky enough to pick up this reciever for $289.00 about a month ago. The sound quality is excellent for a receiver in this price range. Punchy bass and warm mid- range. I previously owned a Denon AVR 1800 which met an untimely demise. Comparing the two units in my opinion, the Technics sounds better in stereo, but the Denon was much easier to operate, both are about the same in DD, DTS mode. So far, I am very pleased with this unit and would recommend it to others.

When I first started to look for a new A/V receiver I told a salesman not to even mention Technics to me. I was on a tight budget and knew it would be hard to find something that would totally satisfy my needs, but I was sure that with a few sacrifices I would find something. Against my will I looked at and listened to the SA DA 8. At first glance, I was impressed with the beautiful retro look of this monster. And when I heard it? Holy !@#$!

I did not buy it that day because I still had it in my head that this could not be better than the likes of Harman Kardon or Yamaha (in the same price range). I thought to myself....what will my friends think? I thought, I can't buy something that says Technics on it. Instead, I ran home and researched every angle available on this unit that I could find on the internet. The only common complaint about this unit was about the heat. Upon further review, it seemed that this was only a concern for the few who had just bought it and not known to expect it.

Finally, after a month if deliberation and a near colapse into buying a Harman Kardon Avr100, (simply because of the name) I woke up and simply bought what is by far the best value in a receiver that can be found anywhere.

When I finally got it home......WOW. It is a mass and a beauty all in one. It makes everything else in my sytem look tiny. Thankfully, it is not only the looks that are huge.....this thing kicks hard and heavy and has an amazingly clean power.

Lesson learned? When buying anything.......forget about the name on the box and forget about people who judge your A/V system even before listening to it.

For anyone who is considering buying this unit and has a similarily placed object up there rententive and snobby ass.......buy it! It is a steal at this price and the build quality by far supercedes anything in the price range.
