Movies sound great, cheap

Weakness:

Remote blows chunks, Damn thing get way to hot

I bought this amp because a freind has a technics amp and panasonic usually has such goooood equipment. My Tv, vcr, and dvd are all panasonic and I could not be more thrilled, however I bought this reciever without looking at the reviews first. Guess I should have looked a little harder first and saved myself some time returning this reciever.

this reciever sounded much better then the reciever I had however it sure got hot. I installed the fan on the back and that kept it nice and cool but I could not even turn up the volume past 10 oclock without it overloading on me. I have pretty decent equipment hooked up to it as well. The remote blows complete chunks. Never have I seen such a terrible remote control.

I may buy technics in the future but it will take along time before I do.

Do not buy this reciever. You'll return it as fast as I did and if you don't you'll be sorry.

Strength:

Great Sound. DD/DTS.

Weakness:

Funny Remote. Runs Hot but not as hot as many posted say.

Me and my father noticed it ran hot after reading the reviews. It didn't get so hot that people keep exagerating(SP) about but as a precaution we looked into it. We basicly fixed the heat problem with items we had on hand.

What you need:
12volt Computer Case Fan or 3" fan (Optional)
AC/DC 12volt Converter (RadioShack Plug In 811A4214)

First unplug the fan from the system board inside the reciver. After unscrewing the fain it is a simple white plastic plugin. Pull it out. Now you can use a new fan to keep the old one just incase you have to return it or splice into the current fan. Also you can splice into the Converter or just utilize the plugin on it.

Take the Converter and plug it into the outlet on the back of the reciever. Then take the wires and place on into the converter plugin and wrap the other around the outside. Electrical tape it together. (Or tape each cable separate if splicing...test to see if works first) Screw the fan back intoplace and you are ready to go.

By pluging into the rear outlet on the reciver the fan will shut on and off as the unit is turned on and off. Don't worry about ruining the fan with the adapter. As long as it is 12volt fan and a 9 or 12 volt adapter you should be fine, it is what these fans were built to do.

Now stop fretting over heat problems and enjoy this low cost exeptional sound quality machine. I hate not to give it 5 stars but since the unit testers didn't see this as a problem I can't. I assumed it was because of the EnergyStar compliant piece that made them not run the fan full time, but my computer has 2 of these fans and runs all day everyday and my electricity usage is huge (yeah right!).

Strength:

EXCELLENT sound, easy to hook up, DD 5.1,DTS.

Weakness:

Half of the remote doesn't work, does tend to over heat.

*0**THIS REVIEW IS FOR TECHNICS MODEL SA-DX940***

I bought this reciever for $299 at The Wiz. I hooked it up and I was amazed. The sound is VERY clear even at higher volumes, it's real easy to get familiarized with, and I like the idea of Technics using optical wiring instead of coaxial.

The system does tend to heat up a little bit, but I QUICKLY resolved this, and I suggest everyone who is complaining aobut it heating up try this as well, by giving it 4 - 4 1/2 inches breathing room above it.

As for the remote, what the heck is up with that? The power button on it doesn't even work!! Only the volume settings on it work, and thats it. Oh well, that wont change my view of the system because it has to be one of the best I've ever owned before. I highly recommend this unit for anybody.

Great features, price, great value

Weakness:

Repeated probl
Repeated heat related problems, flimsy controls and connections

This was a great deal at $125 from Egghead and is refurbished. It does put off a great deal of heat and after reading some of the reviews from this site, I took the advice of one of the reviewers and purchased a cooling fan from Radio Shack. You can go an AC fan and connect it to the switched outlet or a DC fan/universal adaptor and connect it to the switched outlet. Either way, the amount of cooling provided is a major asset. Other than that, it appears to be a very good receiver. It has the same sound qualities of my old SA GX 690 but with DTS/Dolby Digital. So far, combined with BIC DV62si/52si and 62clr it sounds great!! Let's hope it lasts longer than the other reviewers. Go with the cooling fan!!

Burns out, overheats sounds like crap compared to yamaha for the same price.

When you buy a product you expect it to be reliable no matter if it's cheaper or whatever the case. And so i ask the question what in the hell is the point in buying somthing that burns out on you.So when buying a reciever always (and take this advice)do research on the reliability of a product, why in the heck buy this junk when you can buy a leading reciever brand like yamaha or harman kardon for the same price and get WAY better sound qality and fetures and know that you are backed up buy the best name in the world. So do yourself a favour and dont buy no crap like techniks or aiwa or kenwood or sony etc when it comes to a reciever you will be sorry.Dont listen to anybody's asuring coments just listen to the difference yourself and you will see what im saying.

HEAT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM

Well, I am amending my review below. The unit just died on me! Figures!

This reciever runs WAY to hot and is not dependable at all! If you have money you want to throw down the toilet, then buy this reciever!

I am giving it 2 stars for the value rating because it is so cheap. Overall though...a non-working receiver is a one star receiver!

Runs WAY to hot!!! Could die on you in a matter of weeks....

Well, I thought I was getting a good bargan on this unit when I bought it at Best Buy. They said they were not selling this model anymore and were getting rid of them cheap! Now I know why....

At first I thought this was a great unit, it had nice sound and could decode BOTH DD and DTS! I thought I had a found a steal...boy was I wrong. First off, the unit runs WAY WAY WAY to hot. You could probabily boil an egg on this thing. Second of all the Fan REFUSES to turn on until a certain volume level is reached! WHO'S STUPID DESIGN DECISION WAS THAT???? I guess I have to go deaf before my unit will be properly cooled.

Anyway, just today....the unit dies on me. I was just watching TV, when all of a sudden there is SILENCE. Nothing. The Stereo option still works, but both the surround and DTS modes are dead. To top it off, today is the 31st day after I bought it! Best Buy stops accepting returns after the 30th day! How wonderfull!

Well, anyway I am going back to Best Buy and DEMANDING my money back on this piece of garbage. I am warning you all to not be suckered into buying this unit like I was! You will regret it!

Strength:

cheap price, DD/ DTS

Weakness:

CHEAP EVERYTHING, NO 5.1 CHANNEL INPUT

Basically you get what you pay for. This unit has DD and DTS as well as digital inputs. I own a Sony 555ES (an awesome unit) I previously owned a Sony DE935 and before that a Sony Prologic reciever. My sister is a student on a tight budget and asked for my help. After a lot of searching I picked out the 930. (only because I got it for $199.00 after tax). After using it in my home for about 2 weeks before shipping it to her this is what I saw. Everything about it is cheap. The cabinet is light and all the knobs and buttons are wimpy. The remote looks like a toy. It runs extremely hot even at very low levels but the fan doesn't kick in w/o high volume. The tuner is very weak (her old magnavox boom box has a better tuner). No 5.1 input for future formats. Though not bad for the price, the decoding of DD isn't very good. It has no frills what so ever. She also said the sound would cut out for a second every once in a while for no reason. In it's defense, I auditioned the JVC 778 and the Technics sounded better. Basically if the most you can afford is around $200 and you can get this reciever for near that go for it. Otherwise save up and get a bottom line Yamaha/ Onkyo or a midline Sony/ Kenwood. These can be had for about $400.00 and will be made alot better. They will also look and sound better. They may not had DTS but everthing comes in DD and good DD processing is better than crappy DTS decoding. This will leave you with a product you can be proud of and want to keep instead of immediately wanting to upgrade, saying the best thing about it was the price. DO NOT pay over $250 for this unit. Again for the price it's not bad but it it is a very cheap unit. I'll let you decide.

Strength:

Built in Decoder.. high wattage.. 'ok' sound

Weakness:

It keeps blowin up

This purchase was a total rip off. I purchased the unit in late november 99 . I had it for 2 weeks and it quit working. Company I bought it from replaced it. Last nite I watched a movie, turned off the unit and went to bed. This morning I get up and low and behold, the unit does not work again... same problem. The unit runs way to hot, and frys the amps.

I can not beleive a company like panasonic/technics would place something like this on the market. I have my fingers crossed that the company I purchased it from will allow me to trade it in for something that will work longer than a few weeks. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT... U will be disappointed if you do !!!!
