Mr Chuck

Strength:

Enough power for good home theatre sound. Enough inputs (as mentioned above) for all your devices. Extremely affordable for those who just want a decent home theatre.

Weakness:

Runs hotter than a Louisianna whorehouse. Produces a funny smell (heat related?). Haven't heard the "hiss" mentioned in some reviews.

Good reciever for anybody looking for an easy/affordable home theatre solution. DTS/Dolby Digital 5.1 built in. Enough inputs for every device you might own (CD, VHS, TV, DVD, PHONO, TAPE). Seems to be a step up from my old Onkyo Dolby Pro-Logic reciever.

Strength:

At first it was the price.

Weakness:

This is a piece of crap.

This unit burned up just watching a movie one month after the warranty expired. It was in an open area with nothing blocking the vents. Very dissapointed in this product. I just replaced it with a Yamaha HTR 5240...wish me luck and stay far away from this unit. I wish I could rate it lower than a 1.

Strength:

*Good power *You can hook up almost anything to it (very compatible) *Good value (If you bought one today, you could get it for $200 or less)

Weakness:

*Runs a little hot *The remote is a piece of junk

My first mistake... I bought this thing when it first came out because at the time, it was the affordable reciever that had the built in decoder. Second mistake... I let the morons at sears sell me on it. I really can't complain too much because I haven't had any major problems with it. I am just a little put out that I spent so much for it. Otherwise it has been a solid amp. It does tend to get warm but other than that, it does put out some power. I would suggest, for moderate use, it would be fine in an open, well vented area. BUT if you tend to use it more often or, leave it on all night like I do sometimes (latenight movies). I would personally rig up some type of external fan. Now on to the remote... I don't know what the hell is wrong with this junky thing. I am not sure if I got a lemon of a remote or what?? It is more moody than my ex-girlfriend. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I've changed batteries a half dozen times so it is not that. Nothing will piss you off more than if you are falling asleep and you pick up the remote to turn of the amp and the damn thing doesn't work, which encures a stumble across the room to turn it off by hand (or throw a shoe at it if handy). To sum up, the only beef I have is the heating issue and the crumby remote. Solid amp otherwise, and worth $200 but not the $350 I spent.

Strength:

Plenty of power!!:), conservatively designed (not a lot of needless buttons), reliable, great entry level A/V Receiver!!! Furthermore, manual understandible.

Weakness:

Runs a bit warm at lower listening levels, not all of the speaker terminals accept "banana plugs" (just front L/R), remote lacks......I'll explain below.

I upgraded to the 940 because it offered digital inputs, more power as compared with the 530. Although the 530 offers 5.1 inputs for an external decoder as the 940 doesn't, it (the 940) just solves all that for you - unless you want to upgrade.

One weakness, though, the 940 doesn't allow you to acsess the digital mode for say CD's via the remote, draw back...

Other than that, the 940 is a remarkable entry level A/V Receiver. I must mention though, If you want the system to sound really good, invest in banana plugs or pins, Monster Cable (12 gauge) speaker wire and Polk Audio speakers, yes I'm biased.

I must mention - I do not own a DVD player so I do not know how the digital processor really works or sounds.

I use: Technics SA-DX940, Technics SLPD 8, Sony VCR, Front L/R - Polk Audio rt35, center polk audio cs245i, rear channel polk audio rt15i and an Energy eXL 8 sub.

Strength:

Price, features

Weakness:

The heat worries me somewhat

I think this is a fantastic product for my setup - it sounds great playing DVDs through the digital optical cable from my Playstation 2.

Good price, both DTS and Dolby Digital decoding, and it sounds great. After reading posts here, I do worry a bit about the heat, but so far not a problem in sight.
