Strength:

DD/DTS sounds excellent. Plenty of power.

Weakness:

Remote,Hiss,& Heat

Movies sound excellent in DD. The decoding works just as well as all the units listed above, but it is not as clean.
There is a hiss at all times. Most noticeable in the rear speakers.
The remote isn't worth mentioning, at all.
You will need to add a fan to cool the unit. I use highly efficient speakers, so the volume control never goes above 11 O'Clock on the dial. Therefore the cooling fan NEVER comes on. I removed the original fan & repaced it with one from Radio Shack. It is a 12 Volt DC fan, but I use an adjustable output adapter. If you use a voltage of about 4.5 - 6.0 DC it will run slower & quieter. Best of all I could put the original one back on if I wanted too.
It does not sound as good on music. It does not have a 5 channel stereo mode. But it does simulate it.
The Onkyo 575 is brighter, if you like that. $450-$500.
The Denon is a great all around unit. $675-$999.
The Marantz SR 8000 is awesome, but around $1200.

Strength:

Good power. Digital Inputs. 5.1 dolby digital. Ease of setup.

Weakness:

Runs hot. remote. no S-video.

I bought this reciever to finally enter the world of home audio. I had an old technics, basically something that i could hook up 4 spekers to to play my cd's. I love my new set-up. I am using this reciever with Mission 700's in the rear, 703's in the front, a sony SA-WM40 sub, and a Cerwin Vega LS-6C center. I am just blown away. This sub handles everything everything great and puts out the power to shake the room. Easy to set up and easy to use.

The heat can be an issue if ignored. every now and then just turn it up a little more and the fan will kick in and the temp bottoms out. I have a very small desk fan behind my system that i turn on when the reciever is on.

only gripe is the remote. it "universally" handles about 3 models of components, nothing that i have. So spend the extra $15 and get a good remote and have a blast.

Strength:

Tons of power, Lots of I/Os, nice look

Weakness:

To much heat!!!!!

I just got this reciever for Christmas and it works great!!!

I found the manual a little bit hard to understand but,
if I, a 13 year old kid can set it up you can to!!

I like a the Sound Field Control (SFC) Settings and as you can imagine the reciever I had put out like 7 watts so it's a hell of a lot louder.

I'm using my homemade 8 in woofer speakers and it's good that the real lows don't get passed to them.

If you are deciding between a shelf system and this go for this!

P. S. Put no analog cables on top of heat duct. Mine started on fire.

I picked the Technics SA DX-940 for the price range and the features. Lots of different options to hook up DVDs, Speakers, etc. on the back, very easy to setup the unit regarding speaker distance, loudness, etc.

Some say it runs hot but, as long as you keep it on an "open air" shelf it will be great...no need to modify the fan on the back, hehe. Also, it is missing a Digital Coxial port on the back which was a initial problem for me because I bought a Toshiba 1200 DVD which has a Coxial but, an Optical port. That was fine because I traded up to the Toshiba 2200 DVD anyway, which has an Optical port and for $80 Canadian more is the better DVD player.

Strength:

price,power and features

Weakness:

none, so far

although i have only used this product now for about three months i have had no problems with it. all the talk about heat concerns me, but like the other reviewer i have this unit in a open air cabinet with at least six inches of air space between the top of the unit and the next shelf. playing movies with the volume selector @ about the 12 to 1
o'clock position with no more than the expected amount of heat generated. maybe the heat issue is due to speakers with a very low impedance or possibly low sesitivity, just a thought.i do wish this unit had a tone bypass switch.5-way
binding post(the main speaker l,r does)on ALL speaker connects and a few other small features, but what does one expect for 200 bucks.what it does have is clean sound in stereo and surround modes, plenty of power and a fantastic
speaker/bass management system.as i said i haven't used this product long but i have been pleased so far, BUT if i do run across any problems you can bet i'll up-date this review...............ENJOY.

Strength:

Great surround sound, power, and excellent setup features for the price.

Weakness:

Universal remote is not the best.

I haven't own the 940 for that long, but I've been nothing but impressed. The audio setup is excellent and the price in my opinion was reasonable. I would not hesistate to recommend it to anybody.

Strength:

Power and features for the buck! Surprisingly good stereo output. 3 optical inputs. Easy setup. Rear & Centre channel level adjust with built in white noise.

Weakness:

Runs warm until you crank it up then gets a wee bit hot but the fan kicks in (quite quiet by the way) and the temp drops like a stone. That's about the only thing I can say here. Not too much wrong at all.

For $CAN289 this receiver is a steal! I have yet to have any of the heat problems other talk about. I've owned class A amps you could heat a small house with and the 940 doesn't even come close to these heat levels. My wife was not that happy when I walked in with this new toy but she's hooked on the surround sound now. She's even watching game shows in surround! ;-) Now I'll admit the sound isn't up to my Bryston amp but the price of 940 wouldn't buy the Bryston faceplate! I am very happy with this 940 and would recommend it to anyone looking in this price range.

The symptoms the previous two reveiwers describe match almost perfectly what happened to my DX-930 when it burned out under warranty.Seems the design fault hasn`t been rectified. If you get one of these(and I do like the sound my 930 produces)it seems you must use an active method to keep it cool.I had my 930 in a well ventilated place and it took almost a year to fry.Bear in mind I can only rate the 930 not the 940,not perhaps fair but wanted to give potential purchasers of the 940 a heads up.On sound alone it would get 5s.
