Strength:

Clean Sound

Weakness:

None Yet

Just wanted to amend my earlier post. My SA-DX940 does
in fact decode DTS-It is my DVD player that does not
output DTS.
Also, I attached a new 12 watt cooling fan to the rear.
After hearing some of the horror stories on this unit,
I really hope this eradicates any chance of failure
in the future.
If anyone can email on how to get the fan to run
softer(it is rather loud), please email me.

Weakness:

None so far...

I recently ran into a review on the SA-DX30 (amazon.com)
where someone apparently had this receiver melt
after 18 months even WITH 2 cooling fans attached!
Granted this is the 930 model but I would like to hear
comments on what people might think about this happening
to the 940 model. I attached a 12V fan to the rear recently
(thanks Anthony), and it runs continuously-->the fan
I mean. The receiver feels cool as well. I would hate to lose my receiver since I am a student on a tight budget.
Thanks in advance,

Strength:

Clean Power at high volumes

Weakness:

NO DTS

Have had this for about 6 months and my
only complaint is the fact that when I play
DTS encoded DVD's, I am greeted by total silence!
Ex: Saving Private Ryan, American Beauty....
A big dissapointment!
5.1 is great though!
All of the connections are fine and my DVD player
indicates that DTS is passing through my
optical cable...I have tried everything
..even called Technics and was told the receiver
has the decoder in it-
If anyone out there has a similar problem/solution,
I would appreciate your suggestions!! Thank You,

Strength:

Great price, great sound.

Weakness:

Heats up a lot. No digital coaxil.

This is a great unit. Bought it as an open-box buy at Best Buy. Hence the $219 cost. This has been a great central peice to my entry level home theater system. The heat it created was a problem. The unit would actually overheat and shut itself down (a feature I am happy is included). To solve this, I simply switched its location with my VCR. The receiver is now on a little table about one foot high next to my TV, instead of in the TV Stand. This gives it plenty of space because there is nothing on top of it. Haven't had a problem with it since and that was about 6 months ago.

Hooked up a digital optical cable to my DVD player and it sounds fantastic.

I would recommend this unit to everyone as lond as they have someplace spacious to place it or a way to cool it down otherwise.

Strength:

*SA-DX950* Looks & features, Clear-Crisp detailled sound, Awesome sound stage, DVD-audio ready (ext. 6ch input), MOS-FET, DTS & DD.

Weakness:

5x100 watts..... rated in 6 ohms. more like 70-80 watts in 8 ohms i guess.

This is actually for the newer model , the Sa-DX950;

I already rated the DX940 2-3 months ago... But since i have been a victim of the heat issue. I guess they couldnt fix it , so The Shack proposed that i pay 50$ more and get the newer one: the SA-DX950... and - OMG - what a difference, with the same set of speakers, its simply astonishing. it has lots of inputs(same as the DX940 but with a 6ch input for DVD audio).

-The bass management has been fixed also , no more cold / no-life sound when selecting speaker to "small". And the soundstage is more than life-like.

-It has 2 optical & 1 coax. input, wich is good because most of those numeric cable tv decoder has a coaxial digital output. Even more, i can select wich components are optical and wich are coaxial.

-No more heat issue, the heat-vent is a lot more efficient (it has vents on top & on each sides). They also removed the fan. the cooling system is just fine now.

-The remote control has been improved also , it feels & look less cheaper.

-DSP modes like Theather , SImulated surround , now sounds waaaay better!!

I give a 10 stars on 5!!! Get it for 50$ more, its DA BoMb !! and oh , u can get the SA-1050 with S-video inputs for 100$ more.

Strength:

dolby digital & DTS at an alright price. fan will blow flames out if volume is up high enough.

Weakness:

quality control, internal build quality, color (not a fan of army green), ventilation, lack of coaxile input, smallish display, menu system.

well, if it isn't apparent by the list of stuff i have used, i do work in an audio store. i work at circuit city, and I am also very good friends with a higher end dealer in the area. at it's original price, it was straight up robbery, but at its close out price it isn't a bad deal. we sent three of these units out defective last year due to heat related failures, and that is without using them that much. mostly they sat on at idle (which is how i leave my components when not using them). i know amps get hot, but heat is usually a by product of power being produced, not merely the unit being on. the fan on the unit isn't temp. contolled, so no matter how hot the unit gets, unless you have the volume way up, the fan is just going to sit there. the output quality isn't the best in the price, and the lack of assignible digital inputs, coaxile digital inputs, dedicated 6 chanel direct input, 5 way binding posts on rear and center channels and the overall lack of inputs (most people will still have to use the tv to control all of their video sources then run audio from tv to reciever.)

this years model isn't much improved, it has one coaxile input, but it still does not have asignable inputs, no binding posts on the rear, no s-video, and an exceptionally small heat sink. there are better out there, and they are definatly worth the money.

Weakness:

- plain jane features
- plain jane looks (both the reciever and r.c.)

I was skeptical about this product from reading past reviews, but people are taking the heat issue a bit too far. The heat, although quite warm, isn't as hot as people in other reviews are making it seem. I thought I read somewhere that Panasonic/Technics now has a different cooling system, so maybe that's why my reciever isn't as hot as others are saying, but to potential buyers out there: I have had any trouble with over heating and I have watched quite a few dvd's with this reciever.

The setup was fairly easy and straight-forward, although not having coaxial connections made it necessary to find a dvd player with the optical toslink out.

Hello-would someone kindly email me about the fan issue-
my 940 has an extra fan attached to the existing
fan but:
The fan is 12V and the DC adaptor I am using is 6v.
Amperage wise I am OK-the adaptor is .700Amp(6V),
and the fan is .160 amp (12V). The fan runs slower but
I have been using it for 3 months and have had no
problems(high heat from the adaptor, fire, etc). The fan runs ok as well-in fact I let my amp run all night recently
and the fan/dc adaptor seemed ok.
The problem is JE's article below states that
some 12v fans can be damaged by using a 6v adaptor.
Any thoughts??
Thanks in advance for the help...
Nick(nyyk147@yahoo.com)
PS-The fan is from radio shack...The tech there told me it was safe...

Solid, good panel & buttons

Weakness:

Several see forward.

I returned a DENON 1601 because it was too depht to fit in my bookself.
I choosed this Technics -more expensive than the DENON- because it was the narrowest, despite of the fan. Also, it has the same look than my Technics CD player.

I spent 1/2 hour to realize this was not my receiver.
I have a large front speakers: Mission 704, so I don´t need a subwoofer.
Analog stereo sounded fine, but when I tried to setup DD, I was dissapointed.
1- Surround speakers had a hiss even in lowest volumes, in any surround/DSP mode.
2- Bass suddenly run out of my system, because the .1 channel is *always* directed to the subwoofer (even if you configure it as off). DENON receiver forwards the swoofer channel to fronts and... what a difference!
3- ONLY optical input! -> I had to purchase another -not cheap- unwanted cable.
4- In some DVD discs, that changes type of coding from PCM/DD2/DD5.1 between menus, it sounds loud 'CLICKS' and 'PUMS' that I was worried could damage my speakers! Nobody has experienced this?

I returned it back to the dealer and got the DENON again.
