Strength:

good sound, lot of options, dts and dolby sound

Weakness:

cheap remote, manual not detailed enough

I purchased a floor model 940 and it constantly overloaded and shut off, so I returned it to Best Buy and tehy gave me a new 940 in box. It has worked flawlessly since (about 8 months). Unlike my kenwood which I never turned off, I always shut the 940 down at night. It is also on top of my tv uncovered. The only weird problem is occasionally it will flash a digital dolby warning on my tivo/sat units input, and I am not sure what the cause is.

For teh money the Tecnics had the most features period. If the problems mentioned don't occur to you it is a great system

Strength:

Great price; Technics reputation; loaded with features; excellent sound

Weakness:

Additional tape/aux inputs would have been nice; no digital out (minor issue); gets hot (see below)

I got the unit as an open-box at Circuit City. Not sure of price, but I think it was about $180.

I was somewhat worried about the heat issue (as mine gets hot too) until I saw that many other reviewers had the same thing happening. Obviously, this particular unit gets hot and it's normal for this unit. I don't see it as such a big deal. Get real, people! Amplifiers produce heat.

I have found the sound to be terrific, especially on my new JBL towers. My DVDs sound stunning when I use the digital input, and that's with just two speakers -- I can't imagine how good it will sound with all the extra speakers. The sound has all kinds of depth and dynamic range. When I watch a movie with, say, a thunder storm the sound is very true to life.

I wish that it had extra "CD" or "Auxillary" connections to hook up my Philips CD recorder. A digital out would also be nice for the same reason. I've hooked up the recorder to the "Tape" connections -- this prevents feedback when I'm in record mode and accidentally switch the source input to the recorder. So, I've connected the tape deck to what would normally be the CD inputs, and I'm basically not planning to make any more cassette tapes. Everything seems to work fine connected this way.

I highly recommend this unit to people like me who want big sound on a small budget and who have good enough speakers to let this thing rock. Believe me, it doesn't mind being turned up. Go get this thing and join me in the enjoyment. If you're worried about the heat "problem", get an extended warranty with all the money you'll be saving.

Strength:

Great sound, many features found in high dollar units. GREAT VALUE!!

Weakness:

Needs another tape input, (for equalizer).

I bought a Yamaha 5250, tried it out for two days and was very dissapointed with the sound quality. I returned it and got my money back. I asked some of the local audio store sales people if anyone had ever complained about sound quality on the Yamaha 5250. Every person asked said the same thing, yes, we have had many returned units due to poor sound quality. I then asked which unit they would suggest,
(I wanted to spend less than $500),three out of four salespersons suggested the Technics DX940. So I bought one.
I have to say that I am totally impressed with the features and sound quality. This unit makes my speakers come alive. The highs and lows are very clear and I couldn't ask for more.

Strength:

Great price on my employee discount, normal price is great though. DD,DTS,3 optical ins, very user friendly, 100*5 watts.

Weakness:

no aux.

I am very pleased with my product. There really wasnt much to think about. I didnt have enough money at the time for a yamaha and any other rec. at that cost would have gave me less watts, and optical ins. As far as getting hot goes, nothing to worry about. If u get your unit cleaned twice a year and give it breating room like u should it will be fine. As for the hissing noise, try some quality monster cable, it will also take some of the load off your rec. If anyone would like some info feel free to e-mail me at jrodgaiser90@hotmail.com

This is a performing rec. with a great price!

Strength:

Powerfull Stereo mode, Clean Sound at high volumes, even in DTS / ProLogic & SFC, QUICK BASS RESPONSE.

Weakness:

Hissing sound in SFC modes (all of them, HALL /THEATER / etc...) , Voices a bit colored when on peak volumes...

Good deal for the price.... DIdnt noticed ANY HEAT PROBLEMS... since im using combination of BOSE 8" woofers (4ohm)/ Polk Tweeter & midrange. (8ohm) ... It made lots of receivers overheat (and lights shaking) at high volumes, but not on the Technics DX940 ... I Believe theres more than just one DX940 model, since on some sites they say it had 6 discrete inputs for external decoder + the one built in.... theres no input on mine....

I found that on all sound field mode, at low volumes , theres a lil annoying "hiss" sound on all speakers... it does not affect the volume control tho, like the hissing doesnt go up when turning the volume up..... as if it was induced AFTER the amplification....

But anyway, i sent an email to panasonic for that .... But im sure its normal... STEREO ,DTS and PROLOGIC mode are real good.

Strength:

2 Channel Stereo. Power. Simple operations for anyone to learn. Tape monitor. Great sounding digital surround

Weakness:

None for me so far other than the universal remote will not work my VCR or TV (Samsung VCR, Hitachi big screen)

Purchased a Sony (see above) it sucked, not user friendly. Purchased the Technics- Simple to use, more than adequate power, DTS and Dolby digital sound great with no distortion or crosstalk, attractive, good documentation in manuals for remote and receiver. I haven't had any problem with the heat. It seems to heat up no more than any other receiver I've had. I've cranked it up amd shook the house with no problems during movies or music. The tape monitor function is nice so I can use my EQ. Overall I am quite satisfied with this unit.
