Strength:

Sound Quality, Easy To Use Controls, Good Clean Power

Weakness:

Heat when volume is low, no digital coaxial inputs, Other inputs can be heard

I purchased this receiver last week and am very pleased with its sound quality. It has great power output and easy to use controls, along with great quality. I don't know what the people that wrote the description were reading but this receiver is 20-20,000 Hz (not 40-20,000 Hz), also the distortion rate is only .05% in stereo mode (.9% in surround mode). For the money it is unbeatable, but it does have its flaws. When the volume is not at about half way the fan doesn’t run which causes it to get very hot (doesn't seem to hurt anything though), there are no digital coaxial inputs, and other inputs can be heard (when on DVD if CD is playing you can hear CD in background). All these problems can be solved though; like I said the heat doesn't seem to hurt anything, go out and buy a fiber optic cable (which is supposed to sound a little better anyway), and stop the CD before you switch to DVD. Overall this is great receiver that I highly recommend.

Price and power!

Weakness:

Heat... but see below...

This unit rocks for the money! I haven't actually got mine yet as the local dealer has run out of stock due to high demand (which shows how great it is...) but my test drives have been awesome.

So, let's talk heat, shall we?

I email Panasonic Canada to find out what the deal is with all the heat this bad boy generates. Here is their response:

[IMS...CustomerCare] The Technics Receiver SA-DX940 does indeed run hot.
This is entirely normal and poses no threat or danger to your unit. This
happens because of the large heat sink on the main power amplifier IC's.
This heat sink dissipates the heat being built from these circuits and vents
it out through the openings in the receiver cabinet. The unit feels hot
because there is no fan spinning which would "blow" the hot air out. The fan
will certainly come on if you use the unit at high volumes for extended
periods of time. In this situation it is necessary to have the extra cooling
power the fan provides. In the same vain, whenever the fan comes on it
creates "noise" which will effect the quality of sound. Any moving,
mechanical part inside an amplifier will reduce the pure sound quality. So
by having the fan only come on when the unit is used as described, we have
eliminated potential loss of sound quality. The heat sink utilized on the
SA-DX940 is more then sufficient to prevent an overheating scenario, and
when combined with the fan improve the heat dispersion even better.

Sounds good to me! I've owned Technics products for 10 years and NEVER had a problem with anything so I don't imagine I will have any with this unit. Enjoy!

Gets hot,cheezy remote

I purchased it from Circuit City in Valley Stream NY

Took it home set it up the unit does indeed run hot...I hooked up my Awia XD-dv370 DVD player and I was disappointed..there was evidently something wrong with the unit I got.. everytime I tried to play a DVD using the Digital input there was dropped audio or skipping or some other audio distortion... which made the use of the digital input useless...I though it might have been the DVD that I was using so a put in the X-men DVD I purchased from Target right out of the box and it still didn't play right...So I took it Back and Got the Kenwood VR-409 and it works great!! and does'nt run as hot...This is the 1st time I ever had a problem with a Technics Reciever...I had the prologic 770 before and I had brought the 940 as a logical upgrade.

Strength:

Excellent sound and cheap. Seems a little too good to be true. Enough power for my tastes.

Weakness:

Heat, although it has not been much of a problem for me. Bass is lacking. Remote sucks.

I got this A/V reciever because it seemed like a nice cheap way to start building my home theater/stereo system. I didn't read up on it before purchasing because it was the only chance I had to take advantage of a employee discount and I didn't have time. I've had the unit for about 1-2weeks now and it has been in continuous use pretty much. A couple hundred hours of use have been put into it so far. It's preformed quite well and the sound is excellent. The bass is lacking in my mains but I do not have a subwoofer.

I have not experienced any of the problems w/ the CD channel bleeding through the other channels or any noise or hisses at low-to-mid volume.

It appears that heat is a problem in relation to the life-span of this reciever. I am considering returning this unit if there is a decent chance it will die 1 month after warranty. If anyone has any input that would aid my dilemna, please email me at tngk@ix.netcom.com.

Strength:

DD, DTS, 100 watts X 5, 3 optical inputs!

Weakness:

Heat and remote.

I purchased this new Technics because I wanted to switch over to DD/DTS for my home theatre setup. I wasn't looking to spend a fortune on a high end receiver (cause the wife would have killed me) so I found which receivers the local stores had and researched them. I decided on this one because I've been pretty happy with Technics for their low-mid range receivers. The last one I had was an SA-GX690 (Pro-logic) and I thought it was great. It had enough inputs for all my components (at the time) and it pushed sound hard enough to shake the floor. So, I purchased this new one and so far, I must say that I'm blown away at how great it sounds. My DVDs have never sounded so great. I'm not sure if it's the DD or DTS in the receiver or if it's the optical cable that I'm now using, but the sound is just totally incredible. Now, I'm also very geared towards having great stereo sound for normal playback....I love pumping loud music to listen to. And I must say that with this receiver, I'm very happy with the sound that it generates.

Now, like everyone else here, I too was worried about the heat issue. My old Technics used to get warm but it seemed tolerable. Well, after plugging this one in and running a few test scenes from select DVDs, I noticed that the receiver was indeed hot...very hot actually! I was surprised that a company would sell a product that got so hot that a small child "might" actually get hurt from it. I know that's a little far fetched but I could not keep my hand on it for more than five to seven seconds on it without it hurting a little. I ended up having to rearrange my setup a little because the receiver didn't have a lot of breathing room above it. It only had about two inches above it...same as my old technics. Now it has about six inches which doesn't help it much but makes me feel better just the same. :) I've decided that I probably will put another fan on the unit but I've found a little trick that might get me by until then. I finally found the listening level at which the fan comes on for my system hence cooling it down. It will only work with my CD player but if I'm playing a CD at the 10 o'clock position, it will start the fan. I guess this is enough juice for the fan to warrant itself to turn on. If it's not late, I'll usually pump up the volume for a bit and wait for the system to cool down and then keep listening/watching. I just wish I didn't have to do this. At the 10 o'clock position, this is pretty loud for my house. Can't wait to install the extra fan.

The issue of the remote is pretty much the same as everyone else's. The remote lacks a bit but I've managed to program it for my TV & VCR. I just wish that it would work for my Sony DVD, then I'd be set!

Well, for the money that I paid...$339 CDN and for all the features and inputs it has, I'd say that this is a great product. The only downside is the heat issue which keeps it from getting a full five stars but there are ways around it.

Strength:

Everything. This receiver is amazing. It's what I wanted/needed and a ton more. I could not be more pleased.

Weakness:

The heat problem is it's only weakness, plz read futher to find why I consider this a very minor problem.

I was in dire need of a receiver that could do the following things: Decode Dolby Digital and surround modes off DVD's, have center channel and subwoofer capability, have an optical input for my PS2, lots of power, and most importantly cheap. I found ALL, and I stress ALL of this and tons more in this receiver. With 500 total watts RMS (100 x 5), it's louder than I can stand. BTW, I have it hooked up to a nice 5.1 Sony Surround System w/ Sub. It produced extremely nice audio, clarity is amazing, noise & hissing is kept at a level in which I can't hear any, and it handles Dreamcast & PS2 signals nicely. I was looking for a receiver that I could afford ($175 or less) and found www.refurbdepot.com. Since it came in the factory sealed box with factory parts and a 3 month extended warrenty, I went with it. I HIGHLY RECOMMENED this site to anyone. The receiver arrived in perfect shape, and has not even had one problem with it. As for the heat problem, I was expecting it when I got it. It's true, it heats up, but I bought a 5" table fan from Family Dollar, sat it directly behind the receiver, and simply turn the fan to high when I turn the receiver on, and it blows air over the entire receiver, keeping it relatively cool. I've had no need to make any mods, just put a small table fan behind it. Anywayz, I HIGHLY RECOMMENED this product to anyone who's looking for extremely high-performance with a rather cheap pricetag.

Strength:

Easy to set up. Great sorround. Lots of power.

Weakness:

Heat. Warms up rapidly. Cooling system not efficient.

I like the sound of the receiver very much. The sound is great, realistic with DVDs, like e.g. "The Thin Red Line" even if the speakers I currently use are quite ordinary. I took as front speaker for example 2 old speakers I bought 20 years ago along with my first Hi-Fi set.
What worried me the most, especially after I have read the reviews here, was the heat. I think if you let it warm up it will simply burn out.
Having read all the reviews in this sections I took Anthony T's advice (6/25/00)and installed a computer power fan into the receiver box exactly the same way as Anthony described. However, I found that it was not enough for a long DVD like "Gladiator", so I mounted one more fan just over the cooling grid on top of the case to suck out the hot air. Now, it seems that the additional double fan system is sufficient to protect the receiver from heat destruction.
I suggest that anyone worried about his equipment take similar measures to prevent dissapointment.
I only wonder why Technics engineers did not fix the problem before mass production.

Weakness:

Nothing worked

The operation of this unit is very strange. I took the unit back to Sears and got my money back. First, only the "Stereo" option worked, nothing related to surround sound/DTS worked. In addition, one audio source can be heard no matter what audio source was selected (CD player music while DVD is selected ??? ). I don't think this is normal seeing I did not have a DVD hooked up. Did not use the unit long enough to comment on heat related problems. There was some hisssss, but not enough to bother me. Would not recommend the unit nor place of purchase.

Good Power for money; 100 watts X 5; Easy to use features; Help Function

Weakness:

Does run hot at times but easy to correct; radio is hard to tune with remote

As I said, this Technics reciever does run hot at times but all you have to do is turn the volume up slightly for about 10 seconds to run the fan and cool off the unit. It does have a lot more power than my prior reciever and has great surround sound. Also, you can turn the volume up on specific speakers to your listening likes. Lastly, if you buy a Technics CD Player, the reciever remote will run both. I'd recommend this reciever to a person with not a lot of money to spend but still wants good power (100 watts X 5) Overall, a great reciever!
