    Strength:

Very powerful, musically accurate and no hissing. The receiver never clicks off due to overload. The remote does everything as far as combining all of your components into one.

    Weakness:

I know this contradicts my strengths statement, but the remote could be easier to use at night. I have a hard time figuring out which side is to be pointed at the receiver. Maybe next time the remote can be ergonomicaly designed to fit the hand.

I bought this receiver for my dad for xmas and he did not want it because he did not want to unhook his current Kenwood Dolby Surround receiver, go figure. So I took it off of his hands and hooked it up to some Harman Kardon hkts1 sub and satelite speakers. The sound is very theatrical. The subwoofer output just feeds my subwoofer clean low bass, it is amazing. The dolby digital features are very entertaining and enhance the tunability of the receiver and speakers to your listening environment. In a nutshell, this thing is very loud and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good receiver period!!!

    Strength:

Very crisp and clear sound, universal remote, and DSP effects

    Weakness:

    No light-up display for volume

I bought this a couple of months bakc as part of the HTiB YHT-23 package. I've gotta let everybody out there know that this receiver rocks! It was easy and simple to set up, yet it allows you alot of customization in terms of speaker set-up.

I used to run my surround speakers at ear level for awhile, mostly because I didn't feel like mounting them in the wall. After reading a bit more into home theatre, I mounted the speakers up high and it sounds a whole lot better. The sound fills the room more naturally.

*note: If you're looking to a buy a new DVD to test out your new system i strongly recommend T2: Ultimate Edition(the liquid metal THX logo is so cool) or Gladiator(i like how they did the DTS intro, very unique compared to the booming base of standard DTS intros - also if you look closely, the piano used in the DTS intro scene is from Yamaha!)

    Strength:

    power, simplicity, style

    Weakness:

only one sub-out, bindings for speaker wires, no digital optical input for CD mode.

This is actully a awsome reciever. Dont let the the 70 watt spec fool you. Its is very powerful, and very easy to use. Setting up the unit is easy and adjusting it is easy. For some reason there is no optical input for CD players, why? There is only one sub-out, why? The thing that actully bothered me the most was the bindings in the back for speaker cables. The A/B left and right bindings are fine, but why is the center and rear channels made with that cheap spring load crap? So in my opinion I woulnt no more than 400 for this reciever.

    Strength:

Dolby Digital, DTS, nice DSP settings, and nice volume and delay control on all channels.

    Weakness:

Speaker bindings, one subwoofer output, volume control knob

I will talk about the bad points first considering if you are reading this, you are probably interested in this receiver and are looking for any faults in it. First, the center and rear speaker bindings are the spring type, which are o.k., but I expected a little better quality. Second, one subwoofer output limits this receiver for some, but since my set-up includes a 120W powered sub, I do not think I need to add a second sub. Third, and this is purely an aesthetic complaint, but the volume control knob does not have an illuminated indicator showing where the volume control currently is. When watching a movie with all the lights out, I like to see exactly where the knob is on the unit so I can gauge relative volume levels. Those are the bad points, now on to the ear candy.
For the money, this is a solid deal. Here is a little story, Sears sells this receiver for $399, but they also price-match with other stores, INCLUDING on-line stores. I found a dot-com that was having a holiday "going out of buisness" sale and had this receiver on clearence for $279. I printed out the screen, took it to Sears, and they honored the price (though the manager seemed very mad about this). This is a great receiver, Dolby Digital and DTS make your living room sound as good as any theater. There are several DSP settings that are fun to play around with and many that enhance both Dolby Digital soundtracks as well as DTS soundtracks. Even with DTS-ES (a center channel in the rear) on the horizen, I would recommend this receiver (who wants to buy another center channel and run even more speaker cord to the rear anyway!). Compared to many other receivers with similar features this Yamaha has a relatively small footprint and weighs a fraction of what my Harman/Kardon weighed. The all-around sound was terrific with no noticible distortion (of course this also relies on the quality of speakers and cable used), the high's and mid's were clear and the bass was crisp and clean. A terrific product.

    Strength:

Great Sound Clarity, More than enough power for an apartment, thunderous bass, great bang for the buck

    Weakness:

Remote Control, No LED on volume knob.

Best purchase I ever made audio-wise. I saw this unit marked down from 499.00 to 189.00 at Best Buy. It was a display unit, and I jumped on the opportunity. A minor repair was made to the internal center channel solder connection. (Under warranty at local shop), and 2 days later was listening to my CD's the way they were meant to be listened to. I never take the volume above 9 o clock for fear of blowing out the speakers. i have the included Yamaha YTS-23 surround system, adn they rock. What more could I say??? =)

Best bang for the buck. I dont think you can go wrong with buying this reciever. Unless you just like spending more money than needed. This unit performs great. Just like many others I purchased my unit at Sears for 299 (price matched with wwww.moreaudiovideo.com.) Only complaints are with the remote ( too many buttons on too compact of a unit or if you prefer 10 pounds of crap in a 1 pound sack)and lack of banana plug connections for surrounds and center channel. Buy this unit... you wont be sorry. With the money you save you can go out and buy a good aftermarket remote and still have cash in your pocket.

    Strength:

Built in decoder, front av inputs

    Weakness:

    a little confusing at first

I bought this reciever in march because the Sony I had crapped out on me. I was about to purchase the 5250 when a salesman showed me the 5240. It had everything I was looking for and was $150 cheaper. I also purchased some JBL S312's and they sound great. The sound is clean, crisp, and loud. Overall, I am completely pleased. The remote took some time to get used to, but now it's the only one I use. My only complaint is the setup of the time delays and speaker size selection and so forth.

    Strength:

Many hookup options, DTS/Dolby Digital, simple, easy to read interface.

    Weakness:

Bad remote, hissing in movies and music at low volumes.

I have been dissapointed with this reciever. After hearing all of the great reviews on this site, I picked one up. I like almost everything about it except the hiss. I pick up everything when watching a movie and listening to music, and I can definitely hear hiss. It drives me crazy. I thought it was broken, so I took it back to Sears and exchanged it for a new one. The new one hisses the same way that the first one did.

I have been going crazy trying to solve this hissing problem. I am using a Monster Cable (3 ft 40 dollars) coax from the reciever to the DVD and get hissing on movies and music. I also get hissing when plugged into analog sources with different cables. I thought it might be the speakers, so I tried my Sennheiser HD 600 headphones, and they hissed as well.

The sound quality, when I can't notice the hissing, is impressive, and the rest of the reciever is fine. But the hissing is causing me to really hate this thing. If anyone has ANY solutions to my problem, please email me. I've emailed Yamaha and they don't know. (They weren't much help anyway).

    Strength:

Excellent sound quality during DD or regular music playback.

    Weakness:

None that I have encountered thus far.

Purchased this receiver and Yamaha satellites and sub as the YHT-23 Home Theater In A Box from Best Buy. As stated above, sound quality is outstanding in DD mode as well as
in 2 channel mode. I must say the sound quality in DD mode is pretty close to the Kenwood, although after hearing this unit with it's 70w X 5 rating, I find it almost impossible
that the Kenwood was rated at 100w X 5! The Yamaha is much more capable of filling a room with sound than the Kenwood.
However, in music playback, is where this unit is clearly superior to the Kenwood, much more balanced to my ears anyway. DTS decoding and the DSP modes are just the icing on the cake. Another Yamaha fan has been initiated. Now, for that matching Yamaha CD player...............:)
