    Strength:

CLEAN STRONG POWER, SET UP MENU, DISPLAY, BUILT IN DECODERS, PRICE, EVERTHING NEEDED TO KEEP WITH THE SIGN OF THE TIMES.

    Weakness:

    MORE S-VIDEO INPUTS

WHAT CAN I SAY THAT HASN'T ALREADY BEEN SAID. A COMPLETELY GREAT VALUE FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE NOT WILLING TO GO INTO DEBT TO BUILD A GREAT HOME THEATER. THIS MODEL HAS THE MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. 70WX5 IS MORE THAN ENOUGH. YAMAHA'S 70W IS LOUDER AND CLEANER THAN SAY PIONEER'S 110W. ALL I CAN SAY IS SEPERATE AUDIO AMPS (LISTEN ON TEST, THERE IS NO BLEED OVER TO THE OTHER CHANNELS). TRUE IMAGING AND REAL TO LIFE SOUND REPRODUCTION AS WELL AS A WHOLE BOAT-LOAD OF SOUND FIELDS REALLY MAKE FOR AN ENTERTAINING EXPERIENCE. YAMAHA HAS DONE IT AGAIN!

    Strength:

Ease of setup, SOUND QUALITY, remote is easy to use

    Weakness:

remote will not work with my Sony DVD

The Yamaha is simply wonderful for the price. The receiver has sound quality that is very smooth and clear. Setup was very easy. Best sound quality since my mega power Carver system of a few years back.

    Highly recommended.

    Strength:

    Price, Yamaha Sound

    Weakness:

    None

I was in the market for a new receiver after I purchased the Atlantic Technologies, Compact Theater II speaker system. Initially I was interested in the RXV-795a, or maybe the 1105, until the HTR-5240 was released.

The price for the 5240 was right at 350 (US) and the only difference between it and the 1105/795a was that it was rated at only 70w,(Yamaha 70w, is like 100w for Sony/JVC/Pioneer etc...) and there was no s-video input on the front panel for quick aux access. For a difference in a couple hundred in price, I could live with those differences. The true test would be overall sound quality.

The Yamaha was surpisingly well suited to play CD music using all channels, with the "Disco" DSP mode, and actually sounded nearly as full in plain-ole two channel stereo. I have played CDs using all the DSP modes available and the "Disco" DSP is the best sounding for my speaker placement/room combination and I feel that I could not have better sound from any two channel amp out there.

Since I am much more critical of music CDs than the sound from DVD movies, you can be assured that the movies are completely satisfying, and are a joy to experince.

If an AV receiver can produce quailty sound for music (which this one does with flying colors), and provide the Digital Dolby & DTS functions for DVDs, it fills my needs.

I recommend this receiver to anyone who can handle listening to music "as it was really recorded". It will not soften poorly recorded music, likewise it will allow expertly recorded sounds to shine.

    Strength:

    Clarity of Sound

    Weakness:

    None so far

Can't add much to what has already been said, except that this unit made a believer out of me as far as Yamaha electronics are concerned. The DSP is actually usable and improves the "Theater Experience" on my Polk RT400 w/ center channel- plus rears- The Sony's version of the same was a waste of money because it sounded so bad. DTS seems to have made it to the low end recievers, so it's going to be a good feature to have as it becomes more popular with the mass market.

    Strength:

Great sounding audio (both music and DVD), cool running amp, nice selection of input/outputs and easy to use remote.

    Weakness:

No Aux input on the rear apron. Turn table has to plug into the front of the unit. Tuning knob pulls off (not secured)

When I first purchased this unit I compared its audio to a 2 yr old Onkyo HT receiver it was replacing. It was very pleasing to find that the HTR 5240 did an excellent job of not only reproducing music CDs but also had the same result with DVDs. I don't know if it's the Enhanced DSP that makes DVDs sound better or the increased power output, probably a combination of both. Another nice feature its base management capability. Bass doesn't sound overwheming but has the punch I like. Turning power up to 50% provides more than enough output for me and sounds great in my JBL810 speakers.

The 5240s external construction quality is a bit to be desired: tuning knob, mentioned above in its weaknesses, and A/B speaker buttons are a bit chinsy. Neither will be a problem as I don't have kids in the house but it made me wonder what the construction was like on the inside. When balancing price, features, abilities and construction I opted for the 5240 and if something fails during the Yamaha 2 year warranty period I will send it back for repair or replacement.

IMHO, this is an excellent choice for those who are in the market for an HT reveiver in this price catagory.

    Strange remote

I must say, I am now a fan of Yamaha's electronics. This reciever has such a natural tonal quality to it. It sounds as good as units twice the price. It is the cheapest Yamaha reciever incorporating DTS and Dolby Digital. It is easy to use, and sounds so smooth. Delivers smooth bass, and it offers great performance out of the box. I'd ecpect at least 10 years of quality out of this unit. It is really heavy, which indicates it's internal organs are probley construced of quality materials. I like this unit, and I now like Yamaha. This makes my system with A Definitive ProSub 80 and Paradigm's in all four corners, with a CC-170 in the center. WOW!

    Strength:

Great name, much improved remote over last year, simple style, good power...

    Weakness:

Display says "volume up" or "volume down", I would have prefered a little rectangular light on the dial (so you can see where the volume sits) or a dB level displayed instead.

So far I am very happy with this purchase. The Digital is so much nicer than my old Teac ProLogic receiver, which by the way is for sale 8)...
I have only been listening to DVD's so far and have been extremely impressed. The Matrix blew me away and the definition in the rear channel (Digital) is great.
I found there to be a fair bit of level adjustment neded at the beginning and I was worried because there didn't seem to be too much bass. But once the levels and speaker configs. were set, I was much happier. There is a sub-out but at this time I don't feel I need one due it's great punch.
I would have liked a loudness feature because I do a fair bit of my listening during the evening. Although Yamaha has a similar feature, it's just a little harder to set than your standard loud button.
I was extremely pleased to see that Yamaha had finally re-configured this units remote, the previous silver dial really turned me off the 5140 as well as the 595, etc...
It's been changed to a nice slim black unit that is substantially easier to use, IMO.
All in all, this amp is going to serve me well for the next few years, until I can afford the V1!
BTW, I paid roughly about $525 for this unit at Soundsaround in Calgary, but I'm sure that price will be beaten within no time as this model has just come out (I did however get a 3 year warranty included in that price)

    Cheers

Good Clear Sound. Price, DD and DTS.

    Weakness:

I got this unit after reading the review for 5140. Since I could not find 5140 anymore (being replace by 5240) I tried this puppy. I got it very cheap at the local store for $269.
Once I tried at home, I was amazed at how good this product is. It also had DTS decoder. I used paradigm speakers for the whole system. Comparing what you got with this price, I have to give 5 stars.

    Strength:

Power. Clear sound. Unit display. S-video input. Remote control.

    Weakness:

Maybe more A/V input and S-video input. No totally discrete circuitry for all channel.

70W RMS-per channel power rating is like at least 100W of other brands. I have not tried the power knob more than noon position with concern of damaging my speakers. Leaving it at 10AM position is more than enough for my living room. I have not heard any noise, signals are quite clear in all modes, AC3, DTS, or Stereo. DSP is OK. The remote is not bad at all, preset codes support virtually anything. I now can control all my equipments with this remote. I also like the display on the unit and the layout. Nothing fancy, just easy enough. Some weakness is this unit does not have total discrete circuit for all channels. One or two more A/V and S-input should be nice, but at $250, what more can I ask.
    My audio system:
    Pioneer DV-525
    Pionner LD-890
AR 318PS front, AR 112PS sub, Pioneer center and surround.
By the way, I auctioned this unit new at Ubid for $249, but ecost.com sells it new for $290 with 2 YRS warranty. I did not know ecost.com until I have won the bid.

    Strength:

Everthing! So much power (dont let the watts fool ya), this is one receiver you probably wont turn over 1/2 way, ever!.. Many sweet dsp modes, total configuration, ..besides setting the "pink noise" level you can also turn up the center, rears, subs in decibals, and its completly seperate from the other setings..
Clean 2 stereo mode, which some manufacters seem to ignore. Hey we all listen to cd's in stereo, and this unit excels, you can combine the powered sub and get great sound..

    Weakness:

It reproduces everthing to good!.. A weakness? Sometimes... Be prepared to hear chit as it was intended.. I call it the "sshhh" factor, If vocals have some shh or not talking exactly clean its produces that.. This reciever has amazing "true-to-life" reproduction of all sounds.. This seems to come out over the center channel..

I cant believe what a gem this product is.. Anyone whos choosed any other receicer under 500 dollars hasnt done any research or ever heard a yahama amp. I am SIMPLY BLOW AWAY, I almost couldnt get off my couch to write this.. Plain and simple this thing ROCKS!.. I got sony speakers along w/this unit (mf515's{fronts},cn490{center},sawm40{sub}, and 105's{rear}... Just get one and bring it home.. I havent turned mine past 10'o Clock, and it was just kicking..
