Strength:

HIGH QUALITY, RUNS SUPER COOL, EXCELLENT SOUND, AUTO DET DTS & DD, AUTO CODE LEARNING REMOTE, LOW THD IN 5 CHANNEL MODE, ECT.

Weakness:

NO DVD S-VHS OUT, REMOTE NOT BACKLIT, SKIMPED ON THE SPEAKER CONNECTIONS, OLDER DSP TECHNOLOGY

As in everything there are trade offs, I spent about 4 months deciding which HT receiver to buy and ended up with this excellent yamaha rx.

Having owned it now for about 6 months with zero problems I have to say I'm extremely happy so far, other than minor issues with the dvd s-vhs out which was not a problem, in fact I prefer to go straight s-vhs out to my tv anyway, this rx auto detects dd and dts without a hitch and feels more like 110 watts per channel than 85 in my op.

I now have found it for an incredible price online, I paid $550 shipped from onecall and I'm checking this out but another company selling it for $429!!! I almost would buy another at this price if its not a refurb and I'm waiting to hear back on that, the website is www.electronicsemall.com so if your looking this is the best deal I have ever seen for this receiver.

As far as HK, they aren't reliable and their power supplies fail alot because they try to make too much power at low ohms, look around and see all the refurbed Hk's their everywhere, this yamaha isnt the most feature rich unit out there, it has alittle older dsp's and lacks a few of the newest features but its quality and reliablity and sound make it the best consumer Rx under $800 in my op, and as far as the remote goes I like it and its not hard to setup at all, don't even use the onscreen I do everything from the front panel.

I don't think I have ever see, heard or felt the fan kick in it runs that cool, even with private ryan turned up, running the Technics(6ohm) with the Infinity speakers not barely warm when running a+b's the rating should be combined 16ohms I'm at 12 plus the rears and the center loads it doesn't even flinch, so even yamaha's consumer line power supply is pretty damn good and most units I looked at with zero load just being on were hot to the touch, read Sony, Technics, Pioneer, Kenwood and HK.

For music the soundfields are cool and dvd digital audio is great dts is even better(Private Ryan), I like the jazz for the bass and rock for the airy feeling, optical out to my sony cd changer made a good improvement over analog as did the optical for dts & dd.

I do find it hard for people to blame the rx for being "too bright" if anything the speakers make the biggest impact on that compliant and I listen to this unit for hours without fatigue.

5 stars quality and value especially at $429 if its legit and not a refurb.

My current setup is modest but its sound good to me:

RV-1105
Infinity OV3's
Pinnacle WS Center
Advent 550S(sub)
Acoustic Research 226PS(rears)
Technics SBM300(B's/front effects) Amazing little speakers
Yamaha K903 Dual Cassette
Toshiba 4109 DVD Player
RCA 31" HT TV
AR sub cable
AR Toslink to DVD and CD

Strength:

power of amp for rating, clarity of sound, value

Weakness:

none really

My old JVC was rated at 100Watts and this yamaha was rated at 85. Someone was lying (JVC). Has more volume than anyone should need for a typical family room. The REALLY cool thing was with the source set to CD and the CD paused, I cranked the volume all the way over (very nervous someone would bump the play button) and I heard NO HISS.

I was surprised to hear how much detail in music or movies that this amp provided. Sounds I never discovered before. I figured my JVC cost the same as this Yamaha so I shouldn't be too far off. Not. Very big difference.

Clarity and quality of sound is my main issue and this amp has it. Of course it has more jacks than I would need in all formats for now.

One thing on my wish list, why can't these manufacturers produce video COMPONENT switching in a reasonable price range??!! It can't possibly cost much to put in if you already built something for the svhs and composite.

Using with polk 7300 speakers, JVC 501BK dvd player, JVC CD player, and Sony W400Q projector.

Strength:

Sounds Great! Price I paid, Quality unit, & I like that remote.

Weakness:

Spring clips for center & rear speakers.

I am in the process of building a home theater system. All of my equipment has been purchased over the internet. Bought the Yamaha RV-1105 from One Call. Lucked out. Called about some open box units they had & was informed they were all out. As luck would have it they said they would extend the $488.76 Price on a new unit. I gladly took one. Delivered price was $518.76 I must admit I was a little leery that they might give me a used model at that price but they assured me it was new & in the box. It arrived & was all they promised it would be. I am very happy with this unit & am glad that my ears are not as picky as some of the reviewers who post here. To me this unit sounds as good as any I have heard. Read the manual, relax & tune it in. I listen to music on my 4700 dish network reciever through an optical cable the sound is terrific the Yamaha is a great unit & For the price I paid it was a steal. My main speakers are Wharfedale sapphire sp 87's. My center speaker is a lso a Wharfedale sapphire center speaker. I recommend them as they sound great. Bought new on U-Bid.com Prices Mains $277.84 for the pair delivered & for the center $100.92 delivered. So far total price for all is $897.52 I still need the Rear channels & A powered sub. I will be surfing for them on the net & Listening to my new eqiupment Right now Dire Straits is on & sounds as good as live music & this unit Cranks if you want it. or plays soft & clean. Whatever your mood it follows faithfully. As for the controller I was a little intimidated by it at first but read the manual & you will grow to love it. It comes with a quick refrence card. Keep it handy for awhile & soon you will not need it. It controls my Satillite dish reciver VCR, TV. & many functions overlap to include the R-V 1105 when controlling the dish, TV ect. I still need a DVD/CD player. cant wait. Thank's to all reviewers here you really helped make my choices clear for me.

Weakness:

The S-Video setup / Digital inputs

For someone who doesn't care about frills, I say this is a very good reciever. For those who like all the frills, I ask Yamaha, "What were you thinking when you designed this model?"
Why does it have S-VHS S-Video capability, but no DVD or Satellite inputs???
Why does it have digital Optical & Coax for DVD, but only Optical for CD and Satellite???

Right now I have my DVD player running to the back of my Television's S-Video input and my Optical running to the reciever
My CD's optical to the reciever
My digital is just hooked up analog (BORING!)
My VCR hooked up analog (obviously)
My N-64 is in my VCR because the reciever doesn't have enough inputs!!!

I read someone say the S-VHS doesn't even work, if you have a S-VHS player!!!

Does anyone know how I can unload this thing? I spent $650.00 for it in Jan. now it sells for $550.00
I ask anyone,,,,HELP!! I would like to buy a real reciever like the Denon AVR-3300

If you have any suggestions....my email is general_med_md@hotmail.com

Strength:

Good old school heavy amp. Louder than 85W rating.

Weakness:

Rock setting issues...speakers are different volumes!

I like this amp a lot, but I was just wondering if anybody out there noticed that there was a discrepancy in the rear speakers on the "Rock" setting? It seems that one of my rears comes out louder than the other one. I've taken it to Best Buy for the warranty doohickie, but all they did was reset to factory levels (wow that's really scientific) and reported "no problems". I've swapped 3 sets of speakers and have had similar results, only in the "Rock" setting. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I bought this product from Buying Edge for $500 (great service, I would recommend to anyone). It sounds great, I have it connected to a Yamaha sub, and 4 Solid speakers (from B&W). Good natural sound, plenty of power. The only thing I don't like is the following: I connected my TV to the S Video output of tghe receiver. My VCR doesn't have S-Video, so it's connected to the RCA. Well, when I play my VCR, I have to set my TV to the RCA inputs, not the S-Video. Maybe I am doing something wrong. For this, I give it 4 stars.

Strength:

excellent sound, excellent value

Weakness:

no s-video switching, cumbersome remote and manual, no binding posts for center and surrounds

This is a great receiver so long as you don't go over about $550 for it. If you plan on spending much more, you might be better off with a Denon or Onkyo.

I find the lack of binding posts and s-video switching to be kind of annoying. I am still trying to get used to this remote, and the Koran is an easier read than the instruction manual.

However, for the price I paid ($530) this receiver is an excellent value. The sound this receiver pumps out is smooth and crisp, in a word... FANTASTIC!

Strength:

Yamaha Name, Solid Construction, Clean Sound, POWER !!!!!

Weakness:

Remote could be a little easier to use.

I got the Yamaha R-V1105 from sears for $349 brand new in unopened box. Seems it was a special order never picked up and had sat in the back room for over a year. I am totally blow away buy this unit. More power than I ever imagined. I can only turn the volume up about 25%. Clean sound. Even through my headphones(Sony v600) no hiss. This is a super unit. Best unit I have ever owned. But what else should I expect frm Yahama.
