Strength:

Loud and clear DSP is excellent

Weakness:

No S-video for DVD, Remote to dark to operate at night

I just got this receiver and I love it, best 500 dollars I ever spent(to bad my wife doesn't agree)but oh well everything on it is great like the way you could configure everything from your couch with the help of the on screen display. The only thing it does lack is that the DVD doesn't have an S-video input. But overall its awesome, nice clear powerful sound just great for my Infinity's.And don't get hot at all,I recommend it to everyone.

Weakness:

no s video input for dvd player

If this unit is the same as the 795 then the 795 must not have s video inputs for dvd .It appears that yamaha corrected this in the 795a ,It makes me wonder if their going to come out with a 1105A with a s vid. input for my dvd. You cant use the vcr input because if you select vcr, then you cant decode dd,or dts Bummer. someone mentioned not being able to keep the tuner on the display after tuning in a station ,well its no where in the manual but , you have to push the efct button on the remote then the tuner will stay displayed. I`ve noticed while playing dts disks at the very begining, while the dts logo is being displayed and the sound is zooming all around, it sounds a bit distorted .I changed the dynamic range from max to std and this seems to help a bit, it just sounded like it was clipping even with the volume turned down .overall I really like this reciever, the dsp sound fields sound good.I like having low level outputs for all six channels ,all controlled with the volume control,I have my old sansui 9090 connected to the sub out; y`ed to both channels ,driving a 12" dual voice coil sub woofer.I listened to a lot of recievers before buying this one ,my brother has the yamaha htr5150, it has the s vid.input for dvd,he loves it ,but I wanted a bit more power.Yamaha has always had and continues to have a great product, you cant go wrong with any of these recievers.

Great receiver. Bright and beautiful sound. The unit is by far the best buy for the money. Difficult to justify an extra 300 to 400 for a macro learning remote and a few extra watts of power.

Sorry about posting twice. I wanted to add to my original review. Also to give the 4.5 star rating.
The "DESIGN FLAW" in the DSP chip is purposeful DESIGN, just
not IN MY OPINION great design. It does model itself after an ACTUAL ROCK
CONCERT HALL. I just spoke to Yamaha Tech Support (they called me at home -
to answer my questions which I sent to them on EMAIL -- can you believe it,
how very nice of them.) He explained that the concert hall had a "dead spot"
in it the same way that the program simulates it. He even went as far as to
say that he had a customer who had been to the ACTUAL PLACE that it was
recorded, and was impressed that Yamaha duplicated the effect PERFECTLY. He
also noted that the DSP program is the same in all of the models, so the
RX-V995 would have the same program. Doesn't matter, it sounds great anyway
with all of the speakers playing. I am glad that this is intentional, and
not an accident. Just thought I would allow everyone who may be looking at
receivers more input on this receiver.

Overall, the receiver is quite good. I KNOW that if I spent more money there
would be more ports, and I could get more power, a better receiver.

The point is, nothing is perfect, and you compromise some for cost, as
always. Potential buyers must decide if it is a worthwhile compromise for
their own budget. It IS a good value for the money though as I have said
before. I LOVE MINE and am KEEPING IT!

YAMAHA CUSTOMER SERVICE UPDATE!

This is the update I said I would post after my ordeal with my R-V1105 was over.
If you remember I went though an unusual run of bad luck with my R-V1105 Receiver & the time involved with getting it fixed or replaced under warranty.

My problem began on August 15th 2001 & has ended finally on December 6th 2001.

In the period between those two dates I experienced a delay do to miscommunication between my local Yamaha authorized repair center & Yamaha.

In answer to my complaint to Yamaha on the delay I was shipped a refurbished (“B” Stock R-V1105).

About 1 week later the protection circuit on this replacement unit went bad.

Yamaha sent me a call tag & return authorization number at their expense. They wanted to check the unit out for themselves. I wanted them to send me something in return immediately & I was quite upset with them at the time.

I now understand that they get many calls from customers that are not actual problems but rather confusion on the customer’s part.

I waited about 5 day’s after shipping & was told that yes it had arrived & so far after 2 solid days at full volume on the test bench it had not failed. They were going to keep at it to make sure. I asked that they keep at it as it took a week before the problem showed up for me & possibly shipping had bounced something back in place,

As luck would have it on the 3rd day the problem showed itself & I had a call on my answering machine to give my rep a call.

I did &through negotiation I was able to upgrade to a more expensive RX-V1000 (“B”Stock) With a 2-year warranty for an additional $275.00.

I will say that after all I had been through I was not too happy with my experience with Yamaha equipment as far as reliability & concern for me as a customer went.

However my new receiver arrived. I hooked it up & set the unit up with an SPL meter. Although it hasn’t been long enough for me to make a judgment on the reliability of my replacement unit. I can say that I am very happy with the sound quality.

I now hope to use the equipment the way I originally intended. That is just turning it on & enjoy.

Anyone who has experienced the “Yamaha” sound can understand why I selected them to process my sound. After all a company who makes some of the finest musical instruments on the market might just know something about how they should sound when reproduced.

I expect this replacement unit will work for a long time, as it should. The 2-year warranty will help see to that.
All in all I am satisfied with what I ended up with for my trouble.

Strength:

Sound, If you hear it on good speakers placed properly you will know what I mean.

Weakness:

Realibility, Currently going through a warranty problem through Yamaha.

Ok here goes. I bought this unit online on 12/31/99. The unit worked great for a long time. I was very happy with it. Plenty of power & good sound to back it up. Primarily liked it for home theater use (The reason I originally bought it) Also is a nice home stereo unit. My problem first arrised last spring (May) After extended play the video passing through the unit would shut off. THe sound still played fine. This problem was at first very small so I let it go till ti became worse & was therefore easier to find for the repairman when I took it in. It got worse & the unit was taken to an Authorized repair facility in Rochester,NY on August 15th 2001. I was informed that this should take approximately 1 week to repair & be returned to me. I waited 2 weeks & called the repair center. Was informed that parts were on order & should be here soon. Waited 3 weeks & called. Still no parts. By this time I was getting impatient with the repair facility & asked what the problem was? I was informed that the parts were not recieved from Yamaha. I asked why? They said possibly the Sept 11 disaster slowed things down. I decided to give them a couple more weeks. (I am not an unreasonable person. 2 weeks later I called still no parts. Now I am sick of waiting. I havent watched a DVD in months & my warranty's on my other equipment are slowly running out while I wait for Yamaha. So I asked for a Yamaha number so I could try to get the parts sent. They gave me a good number here it is. 800.292.9282 Ask for customer service. I talked to a rep & he looked up the invoice & told me the part needed tech approval & that the repair center should have called. I told him that the facility assured me they had called & revieved the approval & were given a part number by a Yamaha technician. Long pause...... Ok please give me the phone number of the repair center. I did & a refurbished unit was sent to replace my unit. (I was not thrilled by this) I felt I was getting a unit with a problem that I didn't know about. I was glad to get a unit so I went with it. I picked up my replacement unit. It looked ok & I was hoping it worked as good as my original unit did when it was working. I got it home & set it up (Not an easy task if done often enough it can drive you nuts) I tried it out & all was good the unit worked & that great sound was back good as ever. About 1 week later I was viewing a DVD with my family & the unit shutdown. I was not playing it excessivly loud just at a normal leval. I restarted the unit & it shutdown again. I felt the unit it didn't feel too warm as to cause a thermal overload to trip. I let it set about 5 minutes & turned it on again. It again ran fine for about 1/2 hour & shut down. Now I am sick. How would you feel in my shoes? I called Yamaha again & talked again to my rep. He is sending me a return authorization & wants me to ship him the unit (This after going through a battery of tests perscribed by him to prove the problem was in his unit) So now I will send this referbished unit back & I don't know what they are going to do for me. I have told them how dissapointed I am at the situation & have been promised nothing other than the possibility that this unit will be fixed or replaced & returned to me. How long will I go without? I don't know. Will I buy Yamaha again? I doubt it.... I am so bummed out by this whole ordeal I hope they do right by me. I will post here what happens to me over this. Any others having these problems? Email me if you know of a resolution or if you can offer any help. I don't want to feel this way about my equipment & I wish anyone else here good luck if you buy this unit.

Strength:

Great natural unenhanced sound.

Weakness:

Haven't really found any yet

For the money, I really think this is one of the better setups out there on the market. I have this reciever hooked to a set of Magnepan SMGa speakers with a 10" 200 watt sub. It really sounds good. Clean, airy and transparent. I have owned and have friends that own much more expensive systems and maybe will reach louder listening levels but they dont ever really seem to sound any better. I like music at a nominal level but not so lund that my ears distort. This is an extremely clean setup that at lower volume levels can conjure the image and soundstage of much more expensive systems. So, if your one who listens to music for the pleasure and not the punishment, then this could be the reciever for you. Love it.

Yamaha! Yamaha! I LOVE Yamaha!

Weakness:

NONE!

This is by far the best receiver out there for the money. You can't beat it without paying at least double. I have pounded my Yamaha surrounds with movies and music. Rock, Rap, Funk, Classical, Heavy Metal, Jazz, HEAVY METAL. This receiver has never let me down. Never had a problem with circuit protection tripping, nothing. Maybe I got lucky, but I think it's because it's a Yamaha. Sony's don't cut it, Denon rocks ($1000's more), Pioneer... Eh. My shelf system Aiwa sounds better than most Sony's and Pioneer's I've heard for half the money. Just my opinion, but stick with Yamaha unless you've got some money to burn. Then you'd be looking at HK's, Denon's etc. instead of reading these reviews.

Strength:

It's a Yamaha, need I say any more??

Weakness:

None that I have found. I love everything about it. The look, sound and, the ease of use.

I have used this product for over 2 years, close to 3 years. And we love it, even my 8 year old daughter isn't afraid to turn it on and use if to listen to CDs or even watch a DVD. So that should tell you how easy it is to use. I'll admit that the remote could be a bit better, but well as someone once said, you can't have everything, you'd have no place to put it all. And just to follow the people before me here is the list of my components:
Yamaha R-V1105 AV Reciever
Yamaha DVD-S796 DVD player
Yamaha CDC-615 5 Disc CD player
Yamaha K-90 Dual Cassette Deck
JVC L-AX3 Turntable
Boston Acoustics Micro 90T(centre, mains, sub) set
Boston Acoustics VRS Micro Surround(rear) speakers

And no I'm not bragging or anything, I'm just proud of what I have and what my family gets to use and appericate with me. I too bought this with out thinking that 6.1, 7.1 and better were coming out. But I love it so I'm sticking with it. ANd if anyone out there can tell me if Yamaha still makes their MiniDisc players and if i Can get one in Canada and from where please let me know.
