I have had the RV1105 since March and must say it is a wonderful unit! On both DTS and DD DVD's it provides clean and clear sound tha is truly realistic. On movies that utilize orchestras on the soundtrack, the DTS DVD's seem to have a natural warmth that is remarkable. Recently I have bought DTS CD's featuring the Berlin Philharmonic from the early 1970's. These were originally quadrophonic recordings. To say the least, the re-channeling into 5.1 surround is ear-opening. The orchestra completely envelopes you as if you were in the orchestra. For these 5.1 recordings, use only the DTS or Enhanced settings as the DSP modes add too much reverb that muddies the true separation. I've gotten more pleasure from this unit than with any I've owned before. There's more than enough features and plenty of power- and I even like the remote. Without question the 1105 rates a 5!!

I bought the Yamaha R-V1105 last night at Conn's on the S.W.Frwy. in Houston. I have not gotten a chance to really run it through its paces, YET. But with everything I know about Yamaha I know I won't be disapointed. F.Y.I. I got it for $497.00, which for any of you that have done their research knows, "THIS IS A STEAL OF A DEAL". I'm in sales myself & I love to haggle but this price was so good at list that I didn't even need to go the negociation route. IF YOU WANT ONE AT THIS PRICE YOU BETTER ACT FAST. CALL CHARLES HALL @ (713) 774-2727 & TELL HIM CLYDE SENT YOU!

I'd been looking for a good receiver to compliment my Sony 550d DVD player and was looking at the Yamaha 2095 but could not justify the 1500 bucks that sound advice wanted for it. I had a HK 65 on layaway, then went to Best Buy and say the 1105 Yamaha for 759, but 2 receivers down was the same one in open box for 607. The guy discounted it to $567 to absorb the 30 bucks for the 4yr protection plan. Got it home and without any configuring (using 2 sets of speakers - Kenwood & Technics) put in Patch Adams (non anamorphic version) and was really impressed with the clarity of the movie. Of course me being not one to read a manual first, every time a music score came on the volume doubled, will have to play with the receiver today to get it where it should be, but overall I like it. It has S-Video, digital/optical inputs, an external decoder input, external pre amp speaker outs, like 20 movie pre set sound modes, plus lots of other goodies, One call quoted me $639 last night for the same receiver so I could not pass this up. For those of you considering other receivers and buying over the Net, consider looking at www.thepubliceye.com or www.onecall.com and good luck.

Been using the 1105 for 5 days now- bought from Best buy for $594.00 after they called Crutchfield to verify their price after a 15 per cent discount coupon.Overall a nice receiver- but the S input on the back seems to be only for a VCR. This means you loose the onscreen remote if you hook up a DVD s output directly to the TV even though the standard composite cable is installed. This is a big problem.
The receiver does not allow DTS/5.1 on the VCR input so the s connectors are useless for anything that's added other than a vcr.
Overall rating 4.5
Would like comments concerning the s inputs as I'm opting for the JVC 888.

i has this receiver for 6 months already. if you are serious about music, DO NOT buy it even when your budget dose not allow you to buy some good ones (not want to mention those companies like advertising for them). this receiver might be ok for an economical HT setup, if you are not care about the music in the movies. it does have lots of "effects" but none of them gives you real music - like all yamaha products - just way too bright. after trying different effects in the first two weeks, i used "no effect" afterwards but still feels something missing. my wife and i are so regretted for buying it. we wish we could just have waited for six months to have more budget to get.... However, if your budget is so tight, R-V1105 still has better sound performance/value among other yamaha machines including A-1 (b/c they are the same, only sound plus noises).

I HAVE BEEN DOING ALOT OF RESEARCH ON HOME AUDIO RECIEVERS IN THE PAST YEAR AND HAVE FOUND THAT THIS RECIEVER IS THE BEST FOR THE PRICE. NO OTHER RECIEVER CAN MATCH THE ABILITIES THIS RECIEVER HAS FOR LESS THAN 1,000.00 BUCKS. IVE TRIED EM ALL. DENON, SONY, HK, AND THIS ONE AND FOR THE PRICE YOU GET A WHOLE LOT MORE.THE SOUND QUALITY IS VERY DISTINCT AND CLEAR. IT MAY TAKE AN HOUR OR SO TO LEARN ALL OF THE FUNCTIONS ON THE RECIEVER AND REMOTE BUT IT IS WORTH IT! AND THIS REMOTE IS THE FIRST TO CONTROL ALL OF MY COMPONENTS WHICH IS MORE THAN I CAN SAY FOR THE OTHERS. PLUS THE PRE-AMP OUTPUTS FOR ALL CHANNELS IS VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU PLAN ON EXPANDING YOUR SOUND.I AM VERY IMPRESSED AND HIGHLY RECCOMMEND IT TO ANYONE!

Before I get to my review of the 1105 I should give a little history of the many Yamaha receivers that I have owned in the past few years. My prefer-
ence for the Yamaha product began about 3 years ago with the RX-V992. I really
loved the DSP enhancements for DPL and DD but was not too enthused about the
musical DSP's...in my small room I found them to have excessive amounts of
reverb. So, next came the RX-V2092...a trade up. With this, I would be able
to control the amount of effects reverb through the use of the 2 extra effects
channels. However, the only thing that I could control was the volume...no
parameter settings control on the RX-V2092. This was however a nice improvement. Next was the RX-V2095...Wow! It added quite a bit at the same
price as the 2092. DTS, 6 channel input (very important!) and of course plenty
of parameter controls for the DSP's. Through countless tinkering and experiment
matching various music and DSP's...I really got the hang of it and was able
to craft a realistic and natural sound environment for all types of music.
It was a real pleasure to use the DSP's for just about anything. I was totally
hooked on Yamaha and couldn't see it any other way.

Then tradgedy struck...my apartment was broken into and naturally...all my
equiment was stolen. It has been a long hard struggle to slowly build my
system back up to where it was. However, I just have not been able to shell
out another $1,600.00 for the RX-V2095 but I definately wanted a Yamaha. After
checking out the latest line of Yamaha receivers...I was very pleased to see
just how far they have come. To see the R-V1105 with features that not even
the 1,600.00 RX-V2092 of a couple of years ago had was a real pleasure. The
amps in the 2092 and 2095 are no doubt better (see the damping factor of the
1105 vs. the higher end Yamaha receivers)but this is a non-issue as I have
since added two Adcom amps. One is a 6 channel bridged to 3 channels of 175 watts/ch. and the other is a monsterous 2 channel with 200 watts/ch. The 3x175 is powering my center and surrounds and the 2X200 is driving the mains.

The bottom line is this...I am very glad with what I currently have. Even more
so then what I had (the 2095) before the robbery. I now have the same DSP's
that I loved so much, all the parameter controls to tame the reverb, DTS,
6 channel input, and of course...quite a step up in amplification for all
channels vs. any of my previoius Yamaha receivers. I have Klipsch Reference
series speakers all around (the mains are the non powered ones) along with
a killer 15inch KSW-15 powered sub. Needless to say...this system rocks like
never before.

My advice would be this...buy the lower priced 1105 (or the 795 which is the
identical unit spec. for spec.)and add on external amplification. For about
the same price of a 2095 you will have much better control and sound with
all the great Yamaha DSP technology. The 1105/795 will serve as a great
Preamp/Processor ready for the future with 6 channle input.

Enjoy,
Andy

I would start off by saying I haven't really pushed this reciever too hard, being in a townhouse I do respect my other neighbors but I break out and crank
every once and awhile.
I looked at the Sonys and Denon and HK, Pioneer, and a few others, but the Ya,aha was the best in my opinion.
I would classify this reciever as a very well made, easy to understand and use,
with excellent build quality and very nice sound.
This being my first higher-end setup(for me), I am still building it, right now I am running this reciever paired to Infinity Overture 3's, waiting on my center speaker a pinnacle wide screen center, I have a pair of Infinity L-MPS for the rears but I don't think they are going to cut it, if anyone has a suggested rear speaker I'm all ears.
Anyway I feel this is an excellent receiver, easy to use, good remote, except for the lack of tunning on the radio, its all presets and the speaker connections on the back not all being banana compatable, other than I love it.
Bought it at Onecall.com for $550 plus $30 for shipping best deal I could find
and the lowest they said they will go, you can haggle with them over email and they are very good at responses and I would recommend buying from them to anyone, best buy price was $699 plus tax.
I would like to thank the reviewers here, I based my purchase alot on their review of this Yamaha and they steered me right.

Thanks Guys

I have had this receiver for going on three months now and I am very happy with it. I have had the chance to try a couple of other receivers including the Sony 925 and Kenwood 209 because of the fact that I work in a major electronics retailer. The Yamaha was worlds apart from both. The sound out of the 1105 was much fuller than out of the Sony, and the build quality was also much better. For example, the Sony and Yamaha are close to the same size yet the Yamaha weighs a full five pounds more. But I think comparing Sony (with the exception of their ES line) with Yamaha is like comparing apples to oranges. The only small problem I have with it is music is a little to brite for my taste but I have it hooked up to an equalizer so it no too much of a problem. But for Dolby Pro Logic and DD I don't this receiver can be touched by any other receiver under a thousand dollars.

Ordered my Yamaha from Onecall with the Compact Theater 2. Great sounding receiver. I bought a Kenwood 2080 a month before and this receiver has the same great sound but is ALOT easier to setup. Needless to say I sold the Kenwood. It's simple, elegant, and sounds great.
