Strength:

The set-up was a breeze once I figured out the remote.

Weakness:

The remote, although once figured out is not bad, is quite flimsey as far as the full folding door/cover.

Just rceived my unit from Uncle Stereo. Got a great price (1095 delivered). Set up was easy. Took me awhile to figure out remote, but it was easy after that. Learned that not all DVD's automatically load in 5.1 mode. I was using The Fifth Element to compare Dolby Surround Pro Logic (DS) to Dolby Digital 5.1 (DD) and noticed that the disc kept loading in DS mode. I was using a TOS cable from a Sony CVP600D, and at first thought it was something to do with cable (mainly because of reference in an earlier review). Before I switched cables, I tried another DVD, and it loaded in DD mode (so left cable alone). I then looked at the DVD cases and confirmed that it carried the 5.1 mode (it did). So I booted the disc again, and went into the menu. From there I manually selected 5.1, and it was fantastic! It was everything I expected and more because of the DSP fields.

So I learned a lot, and am just beginning to explore all the ins and outs of the system. Can't wait to crank it up this weekend. just got through balancing surround modes (use a meter if you can, makes all the difference). Even my wife who claims to have a tin ear is actually appearing to be impressed. Her biggest impression is that with DD, the volume doesn't have to be as load to experience all of the effects and presence of the system. I;ll write some more in a couple of montsh, once I've played a while.

Strength:

DTS, Dolby Digital, and Multiple sound fields. Seamless auto switching between varying formats. Ease of operation. 7 channel output.

Weakness:

Clunky remote and flimsy speaker binding posts.

Purchased this receiver just over 1 month ago as an overall upgrade to digital audio and video. Previously owned a Pioneer VSX-505S which had Pro Logic only and very poor overall sound quality. This receiver is AWSOME! Excellent Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. Very solid build quality with the exception of the speaker binding posts and the flip door on the remote. The sound fields are a pleasure to listen too and really expand the listening experience. I highly recommend the Yamaha to anyone in question of what to purchase in a "all in one" box vs. a component system. My system consists of:

Yamaha RX-V2095
Sony C-650D DVD player
Paradigm Studio Reference 40's (mains)
Paradigm Studio CC (center)
Paradigm Atoms v.2 (front effects and rear channels)
Sunfire Signature True Sub
Sony 27" (definitely needs an upgrade to digital)

The Yamaha drives the Paradigms effortlessly. And sounds like a much more expensive system. Bought mine at Uncles Stereo for $1200. I rate this a 5 for both value and quality since I can live with the binding posts and the remote.

I purchased a 2095 in december at a local audio/video store.I had tried several receivers before it including a rx-v793,rx-v992 and a sony 50es. I think the Yamaha rx-v2095 performed best out of all these although the 992 was also a very excellent receiver.I recently brought home a rx-v995 to compare the two but there was no comparison. The 995 got very bright when pushed towards the halfway point and also distorted like it was underpowered. The remote with the 995 was also dissapointing for what you pay for these receivers.I also like the cosmetics of the 2095 better then the 995.I think the extra money for the 2095 is well worth it.I also think the 992 was a stronger receiver than the 995 ,they skimped on the remote and I think they also shortchanged it inside.

Strength:

Really great sound!

Weakness:

Dolby Digital/DTS input for DVD and remote.

Over two months ago, I bought this receiver and I’m still very happy with it. I waited so long with this review on purpose, because I wanted to write a review without the first overjoyed feelings after buying an amazing piece of equipment.

There is much a can say about this receiver, the great sound and stuff like that, but I would like to touch the weak sites first. What amazed me the most was the lack of a coaxial input for Dolby Digital and DTS. There is an input, but it just won’t work when there is no optical connection too. So I had to build an external coax-optical converter to get things working.
Another poor point is the remote control, it looks really impressive, but there are some weaknesses here too. First of al, the learning functionality does not work on all the sets. There is no way to replace the settings for some default Yamaha equipment. It seems like they assume everybody owns a Yamaha CD player. Not likely…

But these weaknesses can no way compete with the strong points. I really like the sound of this receiver. I always had a special love for bright and clear sound, well, here it is. It works for all kinds of music, too. I listen to Techno and Progressive, but also tried out some guitar music and that sounds amazing, too.

Another strong feature is the auto-recognition of input mode (analog, PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS). Just start anything you want and the receiver will select the correct mode on the fly. Recently I was watching a DVD and the receiver switched from Dolby Surround in the menu’s to Dolby Digital in the movie flawlessly.

I must say I haven’t used the DSP extensively at the moment, so I can’t really comment on that one, but what I heart sounds promising. I won’t be using it for listening to audio CD’s, but for movies it is great! I can’t wait to try out the 7-channel system!

What can I say? I love this receiver. And I haven’t paid much for it too. A local HiFi store had some kind of summer sale, and they had this receiver priced for $500 less then the normal price. I just couldn’t resist it :]

Currently I am using the following set:
Yamaha RX-V2095
Quadral Aurum 5 as Front Speaker
Quadral Aurum Base as Base Speaker
Quadral Ascent 450 as Rear Speaker

Great receiver. One day I'll spend the money one speakers to expand to the full 7 channel capability but for the time being, I am satisfied with 5. Good power, clarity, effects, etc. Only downfall I see is the remote (which I took care of by purchaseing a Philps Pronto 1 week later). I would definitely recommend this receiver to anyone wanted great Dolby Digital/DTS sound. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if possible....guess I'll round up to 5.

I love this receiver. It sounds great. I to was a little concerned with the 20 bit/24 bit issue. However, I have come to understand that this will have zero bearing when it comes to DVD audio, despite what somebody else posted here recently (R.L. Faucette) . It is forcasted that DVD audio will use a 6.1 encoding scheme that will be totally unique to what we now know. It will be 24bit/96khz, but the fact that the yamaha proprietary chips are 20 bit is irrelevant in this case. If we wish to use this receiver to amplify DVD audio, we will not have the on board technology to do it anyways. Simply, in the near future we can buy DVD audio players with onboard decoders and 6 channel output which can be fed into the 6 channel input of the RX-V2095. The DVD audio bitstream, whatever it may be (not DD) will have to be decoded and converted before it reaches our receiver. Therefore when it comes to DVD audio the fact that the RX-V2095 only has 20 bit processors is a none issue.

What can I say except this reciever kicks serious ass. I just upgraded from one of Sony's older dpl recievers(piece of crap-too much surround noise) and I can hardly believe the difference. The soundstage, clarity and detail are all exceptional. I was also looking at Denon 3200 and Sony 50ES but wuoldn't buy without a listen. Local Denon dealer went out of business and closest Sony ES dealer 100 miles away. 7 channel is definitely the way to fly, it really puts you into the movie. I have NHT Supertwos main l/r, Superone center, and Superzero surrounds. Yamaha NS-A325 front effects. I love this reciever. The remote has gotten a bad rap but I think it works as advertised and fairly well. I'm just happy to not have 5 remotes sitting on my end table. To anyone considering it definitely give the 7 channel a listen, I think it will win you over for movies.
