Weakness:

remote needs to be backlit I find myself when im watching a movie at night if I need to change the rotery dial to work another componate I cant see where im spining the dial so I have to turn the remote away and push the volume button so the little red light lights up so I can see what im doing but thats the recievers only downfall

Strength:

This reciever is great been using the dts decoder through my pioneer dvd 414 for a while now and no problems just clean natural sound through my paradigms as for the previous guy how can you even compare sony to yamaha yes
sonys high end componants are descent but you still cant compare them to yamaha just look at each others track record the yamaha is clearly better im
sure that this guy michael will soon if not allready regrete his purchase of this sony as you can see there are no other writings of the dts decoding problems of this reciever.

Weakness:

remote not backlit

give this reciever a listen for yourself its probably the best for the price.

Strength:

DD and DTS decoding. Clean and powerful sound. Praiseworthy.

Weakness:

Remote could be better. Better terminals for the surround speakers and center.

I have my Yamaha connected to a JVC XV-505 DVD-player.
As front speakers Bose Interaudio XL-4000, Wharfedale Modus 3 as surround and I have ordered a Modus center (hopefully I will get it soon).
I love the natural sound this reciever gives, both in 5 channel mode and stereo mode. It has all you need and more.
If you experience problem with bad bass peformance, change the impedance selector on the back of the amplifier.
My front is 6 ohm speakers, the selector should be on 4 ohm if you read the manual but after some testing it actually sounded better set on 8 ohm.
I paid 5500 skr (644$) including a optic cable.

Strength:

Everything else but below.

Weakness:

No Volume indicator, No pre-outs, can't select individual presets for the tuner.

As other people with this product (I actually have the RX-V495... I liked the remote better)and any other Yamaha receiver, you will experience what they call CROSS-TALK or also known as BLEED-THROUGH. This is very common in all mass-fi and mid-fi systems. It occures when you have your input selector on CD and you do not have one plugged in. The signal (from the tuner comes through the other inputs)into the next one that you choose. I checked out the RX-V395,495,595a,795,795a,995 and 2095. They all experienced the same thing. CROSS-TALK will also occure on DVD/LD, TV/DBS and V AUX. It will not happen on PHONO. Actually, if you have a TV, s. dish or VCR source playing that signal will BLEED-THROUGH to another input. Like you said this quirk is only evident when volume is higher then reference levels. Once you plug in you interconnects it goes away.

All in all it is a great product and deserves a great rating. Minus that silly remote control. Sorry folks I had to get that one in there.

Sorry if this sound like incohearent dribble ...I just finished a 14 hour work day.

Strength:

Great sound quality, clear and powerful, great value. Yamaha!!!

Weakness:

None at this price

This is a great receiver for the price. It has good mid, high range and good bass. It is good for both HT and Music. It seperates the sound very good. It has every thing you need for home audio uses. Compare to the Sony's at the same price range, the Yamaha is a much better receiver. I think Yamaha still makes the best receivers for home audio.

Strength:

DVD play back, fairly clear manual

Weakness:

Terrible "Gee Wizz" remote, Sound, surround sound speaker inputs.

I am actually borrowing this unit before I purchase the NAD T550 DVD. The Amp is hooked up to the Yamaha DVD S-796.
Speakers are ALR Jordan Entry 2M (see reviews)Front. Jamo P30 surrounds and Jamo "home cinema" centre. Sub is a D-Box Sub300. To begin, the remote is ludicrous, basically it tries to do too much, very confusing unless you are 10 yrs or under. Set-up was fairly straight forward , however I was very dissapointed to see spring clips for the surround sound speakers, very cheap and nasty. So dont worry about good surround speakers if this is the AMP for you. DVD play back with the DSp "Movie Theatre" is impressive and can be quite subtle - I recommend "Das Boat" DVD, I was actually looking around for a leaky tap!!! That's about where the good bit ends. Pro - logic playback is nasty, it sounds like its coming from the bathroom. Music playback is unbelievably poor for a company like Yamaha. Very dull and very hard to simply get stereo playback. My ALR's are completely wasted on this AMP.

Summary: Good DVD effects, appalling musicality, cheap connectors. Buy something else, can I suggest NAD!

Strength:

Excellent sound quality, plenty of power, value

Weakness:

Cross-talk on unused inputs, remote

If sound quality is more important than bells-and-whistles features, this is an outstanding AV receiver at a sub-$500 price point. THD at the rated 70 Watts/channel is only 0.04%, much lower than similarly priced receivers from other manufacturers. The 70 Watts X 5 channel amplifier provides plenty of power, especially if driving a satellite/amplified subwoofer speaker configuration such as the Polk RM6500 I bought to go with this receiver.

Most of the weaknesses have been mentioned by other reviewers. Not only does the remote have the odd function selector wheel, but it doesn't do a very good job controlling my Sony DVD, my Samsung TV, or my Phillips VCR. I did experience the cross-talk (feed-through) from the tuner on the unused CD input, but it doesn't seem to be a problem once something is connected to the input.

One other limitation is that the speaker setup doesn't seem to let you configure it without rear speakers. Not a big problem for me, but I did want to run without rear speakers for a few days until I got them hooked up. (The Dolby Digital decoder in my Sony DVD player does allow for this configuration and provides some virtual rear speaker modes.) Otherwise, the Dolby Digital decoder in the Yamaha seems great.

I wanted good 5.1 home theater (with Dolby Digital and DTS) without giving up good 2-channel music quality, and I am very satisfied with the RX-V595a in meeting that objective. I feel that I would have had to spend twice as much to get a better sounding receiver.

By the way, make sure you have a sturdy shelf. This unit is heavy--29 pounds!

Strength:

Excllent dynamics and transparency for a value product. Surprisingly potent bass for 70 watts RMS. I drive a PSB C-6 at center, Clements 800's in the fromt and DCM QED1-A's in the rear.

Very good phono stage. Overall, a stunning value as it simply blows away any similarly priced Pioneer, Technics, Sony or Kenwood unit.

Weakness:

The remote is horrible. My old Yamaha RX-V870's was far superior. Chintzy spring clips. I wishb it came in Titanium!

To have this kind of clean power and DTS with Yamaha's superior DSP capabilities for $650.00(Canadian), earns the 595A a BEST BUY rating.

Strength:

Sound Quality, Build Quality, S-Video Switching

Weakness:

Awkward remote, no "digital in" for CD player.

Swapping this receiver in place of my old Sherwood, I am pretty happy with the sound quality it produces. Not incredibly better than my sound defying price 6 year old Sherwood but my Mirage 990 Bipolar speakers sounded a bit richer and seemed to disappear a little more after they were hooked up to the Yamaha.

DD decoding has seemed excellent and trouble free so far.

The remote control unit seems to do a lot, but it is pretty convoluted IMHO.

I hooked the unit up to a Yamaha CDM-900 110 disc changer first via standard connectors then with a digital TOSlink cable, which increased the sound quality another step. Unfortunately, the unit doesn't have a digital in for CD players, so I use "TV/DBS" for this purpose now.
