Strength:

Price - bang for the buck blows away most mid-tier hifis I checked out. Audio configurations, dolby, Pro logic, etc.

Weakness:

Fairly basic remote

Nicce unit. Priced around and given the options between Denon and Mrantz I felt this had both the cleanest look and best overall straight forward functionality. Have hooked it up to Mission M71s and lookig to get rears to really take advantage of the fetures this amp brings.

"Many of the other brands, eg Sony, quote the power figure at 0.9%THD and thus give a false impression of the power output)" YOU MEAN Many 0.09% THD. Big difference i think. 90Watts x 6, 8 Ohms 20-20KHz 0.09% THD for the Sony 1080.

Strength:

Pro Logic II Phono input (for me anyway) Number of inputs. Pre Amp outputs for all six channels. On screen set up display. Speaker terminals. Looks great. For the money, A$1100 is what I paid, it beats most other recievers hands down. The surround programs.

Weakness:

The remote. This was a let down as the remote for my RX-V420 could be programmed to control just about anything. This remote has a program menu that does not have the codes for my new LG TV or my Denon tape deck. I have complained to Yamaha and they are going to sell me the remote for the RX-V1200 at less than cost.

I bought this reciever to replace my Yamaha RX-V420 that I had used for about one year. Although the 420 was great with DVDs it was lack lusture with CD audio. When I went to buy this amp, I was intending to compare the RX-V620 and the RX-V800 and buy one of those when the salesman introduced me to the RX-V630 and 730. The 630 is the replacment for the 620 but boasts 6 channels. The 730 is the same reciever with additional inputs and on screen setup display. My review is for the RX-V730 but most things are valid for the RX-V630. This reciever boasts six channels, although power is slightly down from the RX-V620 (95w RMS x5). This amp is rated at 75w RMS x 6 @ 0.06% THD into 8ohms. This is more than enough to make my ears almost bleed in my 7.5 by 4 metre home theater room. (Many of the other brands, eg Sony, quote the power figure at 0.9%THD and thus give a false impression of the power output) This reciever has Yamahas "Top Art" and for CD music its way better than the RX-V420 although I still was a little dissapointed, that was untill I selected Dolby Pro Logic II in "Music" mode. WOW. It sounds fantastic. With DVDs the seperation is far better than the cheaper amp. I have to admit to having a better speaker setup though. Top Gun has the planes screaming around the room. Gladator and Das Boot are unbeleivable. The digital volume control takes a bit of getting used to. The amp has to be turned up when playing DVD's. The dynamic range of DVDs is that much greater and at -10db the voices are at normal level but when a cannon or depth charge explodes your ears also explode. Music is very loud at -15db and -25db is what I normaly set it to for CDs. I have to get a better Sub. I will transfer my current sub to the main pre amp outputs for music and get a Yamaha YST-SW800 for movies only (When the LFE is set to sub it only drives the LFE output in DTS5.1 or DD5.1. Currently I run the following Yamaha RX-V730 reciever Yamaha DVD-S510 DVD player. Yamaha CDC-685 CD player. Denon DRM-550 tape deck. JVC HR-J655EA VHS deck JVC QL-A1 turntable speakers are all Yamaha, NS-200 front NSC-200 front centre NS-55 rears YST-SW160 sub. As mentioned I intend adding a YST-800 sub as well as anothe NSC-200 for the centre rear and another pair of NS-200s to replace the NS-55s.
