This is the best receiver for its prices. The streble is incredible. However, you may need a sub woofer to improve the bass. I give 5 stars for what i paid for.

I purchase this Yamaha RX-V793 at A&B sound for $800.00 Can. This is my first Yamaha product, where as before I was only pioneer. Yamaha is an excellent receiver I'm glad I switched. Unless you can afford Pioneers elite line this Yamaha is for you, where quit often is compared too for porformance.

This receiver is fairly nice, considering the price, though somewhat defecient in bass when compared to the Denons. It has a plethora of DSP modes, if that is your bag. I prefer my music "straight". If I hadn't auditioned a Denon, I might have bought this one. Certainly better than Kenwoods or Pioneers in the same price range.

The price of the Yamaha can be found in Canadian stores for around $730 now. For that price, it is somewhat of a bargain! It will sound better than any other product in its price range that has built in Dolby. I had never been a fan of Yamaha in the past but this ones sounds quite decent. The only problem with this product is that you can't add on a decoder later to take advantage of DTS so I didn't want to buy this one and built a digital ready receiver. This way, I should be set for the future. Decoders should get better and cheaper in the next few years.

The Yamaha RX-V793 has a great price for performance. The hiss exhibited is only when you turn up the volume past 2:00. I have the Yamaha RX-V793, RX-V2092, and DSP-A1. They all sound great. The RX-V793 for the price has moderate stereo performance, not flat but not full. For the price of $478 it's a damn steal. Although if you want DTS and 6-channel Discrete Inputs wait for the RX-V795 as it will be coming out in about 2 weeks in the US. It comes with 85 watts x 5, 25 DSP Modes, DTS & DD Built-In, 6-channel Out & In, and Universal Remote with programmability but no learning. Changing from the $180 Learning remote to the $125 Universal has drastically reduced the price. And the theory is more like, every year better quality DSP Chips have a less price for the last year product. Such as DD Chips were lets say $200 and now they're $150 and DTS + DD are now $200.

I agree with the general consensus. This product gives you a lot for your mony. I've been listening to the 793 for about 9 months with only two complaints: Musical reproduction is a bit flat compared to my old Yamaha R9 and the center channel has a quiet hiss when set to receive video sources. I find this odd because the front channels exhibit no such symptoms. The hiss is not detectable during normal use and is not distracting even during quiet passages on a DVD.The positive points include flexibility to set the unit up in your individual listening environment (delays and output levels), remote, and power.
I believe there are better units but not at this price.

One thing about Dobly Digital built-in:
It seems like in the digital war, Dolby will win hands-down. Apparently there are no DVD's with DTS yet, just dolby digital. So the 793 with DD is probably a pretty safe bet if you're gambling about which will be the standard in the future. Sure, decoders will be cheaper next year, but why wait when you can get the probable standard built-in now for such a cheap price?

DVD's will probably ultimately come out with both DTS and DD included, or no decoder at all, to satisfy world markets (it's cheaper). So I bought the 793 now, with an eye on buying a DVD next spring when they come down in price a bit, and when there are more titles available and more stores carrying the titles.

Strength:

power, imputs, sound, learning remote

Weakness:

the remote is a bit clunky and not very ergonomic.

This is my first venture into home theater and i must say that i am quite impressed. I used this for home theater, music listening, and for throwing parties. I took this to college for my junior and senior years and it survived a bit of abuse and moving, but i have never had a problem with it. My dvd player did not have a dolby digital decoder in it and this reciever did the job just fine. I love this piece.
