Strength:

5.1 surround. The DSP surround modes kick butt, especially in the music modes.

Weakness:

s-video switching is sub par.

The looks on the reciever are what first caucht my eye. It has a "busy feel" with all the switches and buttons.
The dolby decoder is solid and reliably swithces over when a signal is sensed.
Honestly one of the top features that sold me on this reciever is the DSP modes, both music and surround. While they might not match all material played it is fun to mix and match to create unique sounds on movies and music.
My personal favorite is 5.1 theater mode, it amplifies the rear speakers creating a wider sound field. This works especially nicely for action movies. This is a solid reciever and I highly recomend it, or any Yamaha product for that matter, to anyone.

This receiver is GREAT! I have had it for 2 years now, with not much play, but much diversity in music. I'm running infinity RS4's for speakers and only need a sub... but in an appartment... don't "need" it.
The sound is perfectly clear, you can tell a poorly recorded CD from a
good one, even on a sony walkman, but I guess that isn't saying much.
I have not had this unit over 50% and it kicks ass. I will bre upgrading to a higher priced yamaha soon, so if anyone wants to buy a used 793 in perfect order, let me know....

Strength:

Crisp Output, Rich in features, AC3

Weakness:

None

I have this receiver configured with a 10" Def Tech Sub, B&W DM602 Main speakers, B&W 601 Rears, and B&W CC6 Center and it is awesome. Anyone getting distortion playing loud music (Kevin) has a speaker problem because I can take out the walls before I get distortion out of my system.

The DVD movies sound better on my system than the movie theater systems.

The receiver reproduces everything from Mozzart to Miles Davis to Megadeth perfectly.

I agree that music sounds better without the "enhanced" modes. A system of this quality does not need them. On the other hand, the sound modes are incredible for DVD/TV viewing.

Excellent product.

Strength:

love it or hate it remote control...i LOVE it. more buttons, the better

Weakness:

no DTS...oh well

Thos was my first venture into the home theatre arena. I bought it for 400 NEW. I basically got lucky, in my opinion. I have it running 4 polk tower speakers and my GOD will it rock the house. I have no independant subwoofer, just 10's in the towers, and i'm sure i can communicate with aliens. Clarity is great, and i rarely have this baby over 1/2 volume, as it is plenty loud. Has many options for amplified woofers and center channels (which i don't use, though) and the instruction manual is very useful. My next reciever will definately be a Yamaha
