First of all, This is "Not" a Review..But I am days away from making a decision here..and need your input..Current setup is: Denon AVR 3030 a Pro-Logic "Monster" Amp with 110 "Thunderous" Amps across the Front 35 at the Rears..DCM Dual 12in Woofers for the Mains..DCM Center..DCM Bookshelf Rears (On 1.3 meter stands..) And a DCM 150 watt Sub with Dual 12in Woofers..as you can see "Bass" is not a problem..I can actually Rattle the Middle of my street on one side..and my neighbors house on the other..But..I need to go Digital,and money is Tighter this time around..Has anyone else made a Transition down like this?,as far as power is concerned? Seems like a lot of Bang for the buck, but..seems like you lose on Bass..and gain in Highs going with the Yamaha instead of Denon..95% of my listening is Home Theater with DVD,After reading all the reviews and getting opinions,seems Yamaha does Home Theater the Best,But the Drop in Power Scares me alittle,and Has anyone solved the EQ Hookup Problem that I read Further down the page?(Reverts to Pro-Logic instead of Digital Dolby when used with the tape monitor connection..) Since there are no Pre-In/Outs to hook the EQ up to,and I do so want the Yamaha EQ.. is there a Fix to this problem yet? and finally about the loss of Sub-Woofer output when disabling Bass to the Front Mains..any fix for that Yet?? Thanks for any help that can be given here or by E-Mail.

After careful online research and, of course, numerous listening tests, the RX-V795 was a clear choice within its price range. The "Natural" quality of the 795 was unmatched. Particularly, Denon and Sony both exhibited marked sound coloration that I considered to be quite a misrepresentation of the source audio. I purchased the 795 for $595 from a local dealer, Universe Electronics - San Pedro, Ca.
When I told them I had seen the unit for that amount elsewhere, they were more than happy to accomodate me.
I work in the audio industry, and are very picky about what I listen to, and I have yet to come up with a complaint about this receiver.

I've had the RX-V795 for a few months now. I must say it is definetely worth the money. I've looked at and compared Kenwood, Pioneer, JVC, and the Yamaha came out on top with the specs. I was hesitant at first with "only" 85 watts/channel while the others had at least 100 watts/channel plus it was less expensive too. The difference is that the Yamaha sounded crystal clear with no hiss at all. My old receiver was an old dinosaur with Dolby Surround(not even Pro-Logic) and the difference was just incredible. My setup consists of a Polk Audio sub-sat speaker system, Pioneer DVD player, a Toshiba Hi-Fi VCR and a Sony TV-what a difference a good receiver can make! Dolby Digital is just amazing. The DSP modes are interesting and I find it more useful when watching movies using the theatre modes. The Disco/Rock/Jazz/Hall/etc. is fun to play with but I havn't fiddled with trying to customize the settings. I also find that the DJ's voices sound hollow and distant using practically any of the music DSPs.
Now for the quibbles. I've heard about the spring loaded terminals and it does look cheap but hey they work. I've also heard about the remote. I must say the remote does fit the hand well and can control everything in my home theater. The buttons are in too multifunction that it can get confusing but as with anything should get better as you get used to it. These don't bother me as I'm using the truly awesome Marantz learning remote. Another quibble I have is that the display is basically unreadable in any light short of darkness(even with the brighness turned up to max). I also don't like the fact that you can't scan up and down with the tuner and can only do so in the presets.
I got the receiver for $599 at Uncles. All I can say is that they do have pretty good prices. If you know what you want and know how much you want to spend they seem to be the place to get a rock botton price. Just don't expect handholding or lengthy dissertations on the merits of receiver X vs. receiver Y.

Powerfull, nice universal remote, sounds superb.

Nothing of big importance, but I HATE the color of the display !!

Powerfull as it is, yet it can be very enjoyable when not on very high volumes.
Lots of options too, and pre outs, which I really appreciate to connect other power amps.
3 optical + 1 coaxial digital input with a very good DAC.
Fire up Godzilla and the scene with the dinosaur coming into town sounds MIGHTY powerfull, even with a passive sub - thanx to it's big power.
Channel separation is good too, as well as the soundfield.
When listening to music it's pretty good also, though it can't match a amp/tuner combination with the same price.
If the Yamaha RXV a595a doesn't got enough power and you got a big room, then this would be a grwat choice.

no volume control for rear speakers

what i have is a yamaha rx-v795a. i bought it after buying a dvd player and wanting to enjoy dolby digital/dts movies. the sound is great especially when using the dsp's. however, unlike my rx-v490, it has no volume control for the rear speakers which is very important to me when wanting to listen to speaker b located in the living room (main sp. are in the den).

Was oringinaly looking at the HK AVR85 but decided on the Yamaha 795 after the
local stereo shop was out of V995's. Setup was a breeze (although I wish the spring clips were replaced). Sound is clear and powerful in both stereo and when watching Dolby Digital on Tape. Can't wait to get my DVD player to really put this system through it's paces. But for $699.00 USD you can't beat it. The only probelm that I have with it is the remote. Not just it's style, but it does'nt control all of my unit's.

I just bought my Yamaha 795 and can't say enough good about it (excellent product). I can say one bad thing is the remote or better term (lack of remote), I feel like that I am playing wheel of fortune while using it. I am getting ready to add a DVD player to my system. Since the 795 has only one S-video input and I am currently using that one for my VCR will my DVD player suffer with the lack of not using S-video? I refuse to run wires to the front S-video. Also what DVD player would you recommend? I am going to rate the reciever a 5 but overall rating has to be a 4 because the remote blows.

I had previously been using an older bottom-end Sony Prologic reciever and wanted to upgrade to Dolby digital. When I first hooked it up, I noticed the music to sound much clearer than my older unit. I eventually purchased a Panasonic 120U dvd player, and even with the acoustic series 3311 speakers (which I have replaced due to all of the negative responses on this site), the system sounded very good. I then replaced the speakers with Paradigm Monitor 7's and center channel LCR-350 and the system sounds fantastic. The surround fields are nice (much more realistic than the Sony), and can be modified to fit any size room. I couldn't be much happy with my system now, and with the dolby digital and DTS, I rarely go out to the movies. I don't think I have ever turned the volume up more than about 1/3 of its ability, and the music is plenty loud. For $600 this is a great unit, although the newer RX-795a can be bought for about the same and I would have liked to have gotten that one. As people have mentioned, the remote needs some work, and when in the dark, it's very difficult to know what piece of equipment you are controlling. I bought the unit for improved sound, and that's what I got so I'm happy.
