I HAD THIS UNIT FOR ONE MONTH NOW AND THIS IS MY FIRST RECEIVER WHICH I THINK IS A GOOD ONE. BESIDES THE REMOTE WHICH IS LITTLE TOO SMALL AND SEEKS TO ME THAT IT CAN NOT CONTROL OVER ANOTHER COMPONENDS EVEN WHEN YOU KEY IN THE CODE.THE SOUND IS GREAT! VERY DETAILIZED AND THE SET UP ARE QUITE EASY. WHEN I PLAY DVD WITH THE DTS EFFECT, IT BRING YOU TO THE REAL THEATER LIKE. I HAD A 5.1 SET SPEAKER FROM HOME THEATER DIRECT. DID ANYONE KNOW A EQUALIZER WOULD HELP TO BALANCE THE SOUND? I GIVE A FOUR STARS.

Strength:

Superb DVD/video sound reproduction

Weakness:

A lot of tweaking required for music

I replaced my old Onkyo Prologic receiver (circa 1993) with the Yamaha RX-V795, and I have to say that its performance with DVD's and videos is outstanding.

However, its music performance is initially hampered by the fact that you can't get use both the mains and rears without resorting to one of the DSP modes. Unfortunately, every one of these modes warps the music on the factory settings (and as for Rock Concert mode - I have heard 3 models exhibit a problem whereby the volume from the left rear is twice as loud as the volume from the right. What gives?) Anyway, after mucking around with one of the DSP settings for awhile I finally got a reasonable sound (if not a little overpowering), but why couldn't they just include a mode which gives a simple "pure" signal from all four channels? Overall music performance is fine, though not quite up to the old Onkyo (but then I'm a rock fan, and Onkyo are renowned for rock music reproduction).

So, that problem aside (and a bit of hiss at high volumes in the DSP modes) this is a great receiver which kicks the butt of the new Onkyo. Even at Australian prices (try A$1,300) it's a great deal.

I originally had a DENON Pro Logic purchased in the early 90's so with DVD came the time to Upgrade. I originally went for the 495 with DD only. Great unit but DTS was bugging me and my DVD had DTS outs. So I took the 495 back a week later and upgraded to the 795. So far it has been great! I never thought all those DSPs were worth anything UNTIL I went with Yamaha. The ability to edit the DSPs is a plus on this model due to my smaller room setup. I even play Playstation games through the front AUX! The games, which are coded in Pro Logic, even sound better. If I had the money I would go even higher in the YAMAHA H/T reciever line. Overall I think Yamaha is it in terms of H/T.
Note: If you want more BASS from the YAMAHA units, set SUBWOOFER to BOTH not just SW alone if you have bass capable mains. I saw some complaints concerning this and I myself LOVE thunderous bass in movies and music.

I brought this receiver home after returning Sony's STR-DA30ES having spent 5 disappointing days with the Sony. I purchased the Sony after reading good reviews in magazines and on-line. The sound quality just wasn't there and the remote was a real pain to use. My system is not all Sony maybe that's why. The Yamaha's sound is just awesome. I have a Pioneer DV505 dvd player and Mirage AVS-500 sat/sub. The annoyance others have reported (awkward remote "wheel" and rear speaker clips) are just that annoyances and are more than made up for by the sound quality and ease of operation especially compared to the Sony. I did pay closer to retail price than others have reported but for under $800 nothing beats it for sound quality. The Nakamichi AV-10 is the next best but that's at $1200 and no 6-channel input for future decoding systems. This unit is VERY UNDER rated in the press but that is what made it available. 5-star rating is called for in this case.

SOMEONE, PLEASE HELP! I have big dilemma.I have decide to buy AV Receiver.Right now, I`m deceiding between the Yamaha RX-V795 and the Sony STR-DB925.
I can find them both for about the same amount of money.
I haven`t listened RX-V795 neither STR-DB925, but I read a lot.I think that
Sony`s advantages is:
-multichannel parametric equaliser
-parameters for the position and relative height of the speakers and other
useful settings to get the sound just right (wall type,....)
I don`t know how those AV Receivers sounds in stereo mode (Hi-Fi) without
center and rear speakers. This is also important because I want use AV
Receiver in this mode.I love SOFT and CLEAR sound.Who`s the best in this
field, Sony or Yamaha?

P.S.I think that Sony gives more than Yamaha.Which speakers are
better for me ,Jamo series "classic" or B&W series "600"?

Please e-mail me at krako69@hotmail.com

Strength:

Plenty of power, decent number of connections, reasonable sound

Weakness:

Upper midrange harsh with music. only useful for movies as the resolution is rather poor.

I bought this receiver 2 years ago, purely for movies. It produces a reasonable movie sound, for this price. (At the time of buying, there was very little choice in this price range.)

Tuner is good, and gives decent reception, although hiss from lower power stations is accentuated by the receiver.

Rear speaker clips are highly irritating (can't insert decent speaker wire).
Remote is fine, in my opinion. The wheel for selecting target device is a bit stupid, but you get used to it in no time.

Sound is adequate. I have never been able to use this receiver for music, however, because the upper midrange is very harsh, and higher frequencies feel extremely exaggerated compared to the lower midrange. The effect is ear pain after only minutes of listening.

Don't notice this when watching DVDs, however, so in the end as a movie amp it is perfectly reasonable.

Compared to my Myryad MI-120 amp, the Yamaha is totally lacking in musicality and resolution. To give an example, it is not possible using the Yamaha to hear a clear difference between my B&W 603s and 604s, simply because the output of the Yamaha is so muddy. Comparison using my hi-fi amp allows a vivid difference between the two sets of speakers to be heard. (yes, the 604s are a lot better at detail, sound considerably more refined, but the 604/S1 tweeter seems to be brighter and more fatiguing than the 603/S2 tweeter)

The current choice of home theatre amps is much greater, and hopefully there are now amps capable of performing much better with music than the 795...

My home theatre system:

Yamaha RX-V795
B&W DM604 fronts
B&W DM603/S2 rears (bought later)
B&W CC6 centre
Philips DVD 930

Strength:

Digital movies

Bought one of these babies after owning a pro-logic NAD AV713 for about two years. I was blown away by the improvement in both theatre and music. It put new life in my Sonique SAV4 speakers, much better bass reproduction, the sound being richer and not as austere as the UK receiver.
Teamed with a Yammie DVD-S795 it is mind-blowing on Dolby Digital movies. Anyone still listening to Pro-logic FORGET IT, upgrade to a RX-V795 ASAP.
Music is much better than the old RXV592 I auditioned when I bought the NAD. Even classical, jazz etc are better though not considered the Yammies forte.
Has all the features anyone needs including a tone defeat to get a "pure" signal.
Buy one!
