Strength:

I love this receiver. It sounds great, lots of features. The DSP modes are incredible. Love the front inputs. I've read a lot about the remote and most people don't like. The remote took some time to master, and now I can do and control everything with it. My Sony TV, JVC - VCR, Huges Satelite and even my Sony diskman, it controls it all.

Weakness:

The only problem with it that i found is with the S-VHS inputs. I hookup up my Satelite receiver to the S-VHS input and the 795A S-VHS output to my t.v. and it works fine. When i hook up my VCR (it's not S-VHS)with RCA cable to the back of my Yamaha I also have to hook up the Yamaha's RCA output to my t.v. I would have like my Yamaha to take either S-VHS or RCA input and shoot it to my t.v. using the S-VHS input. Oh well, can't have it all...

I say buy it, you'll love it. Great power and ready for futur technologies.

Strength:

Very clean sound.

Weakness:

Remote confusing at first.

This receiver is GREAT. It has a very clean sound and has improved my entertainment center 10 fold. (I had a Pioneer receiver before this). The remote is hard to get use to but I personally like to memorize the key features I use on the remote so I can operate it in the dark.

Paid $540 (including shipping) through buyingedge.com. This is an excellent service if you know what you want.

I would highly recommend this unit to all.

Still figuring out all the features, but so far I love it.

I have to admit, after exchanging 4 recievers for various minor reasons, I've had no reasons to change this receiver. The sound is warm and the DTS and DD movies that I watch on DVD have unbelievable sound. Friends that have come over to my house to watch movies all think that this system is onn of the best that I purchased. The only draw back is the remote, which I have of course replaced with another programmable one. Since I'm not purchasing the receiver for the remote I have to give this one a five.

Strength:

Very clear sound, lots of power.

Weakness:

The only problem I have with this reciever(795a) is in "Rock Concert". The rear right channel does not recieve a full signal(low volume). I have listened to all the other yahama recievers 595,695,etc. and all seem to have the same problem. However I checked a 795a that was on the shelf for a while and it was fine. Is it possible Yahama built a batch of recievers with this defect without first checking these units.Does anyone else have this problem?

Very happy with this product, however I wish I could listen to my music in "Rock Concert", as the other DSP modes are a little too tinny.

Strength:

Look, contruction, back panel, front controls, sound

Weakness:

none for me

Price I paid: $599

System: Yamaha-795a ;
Yamaha CDC-775 CD Changer (great)
Energy XL-26 Speakers (I love them)
w/Monster Cable, 12 Gauge

I really love this receiver. I use it for home theater and music listening/enjoyment. It drives my speakers very well. Playing CDs, I get absolutely no noise, hiss, etc., out of my speakers due, in large part, to the great amplifier of the 795a. And it's got plenty of power; yes, my neighbors hate me. I don't really have a complaint against the remote. It would be nice to have it back-lit, but I'm not spoiled enough to complain about such minor details. And I like the wheel.

I still need to get a center channel and rear speakers, and I know that the receiver is going to blow me away, yet again.

Strength:

Great sound and configurability.

Weakness:

Needs an AUX input (other than the one on the front of the unit).

This unit has old school looks that I really like. There are no gimicky lights or chrome lining this unit. The controls are straightforward and conventional - and I like it that way. I had my choices narrowed down to this unit and the Denon AVR-2700. What it came down to was simply the fact that the Yamaha simply sounded better - and was cheaper The entire audible range sounds wonderful - much better than the Aiwa AV70 unit I had.

I have a DVD player and jumped to the 'Lobby Shooting Spree'. I couldn't believe the dramatic difference. The Aiwa had built in Dolby Digital as well as the 795a, but I couldn't believe how muddled the sound was coming from the Aiwa versus the Yamaha. Everything is much sharper and distinct. There is no hint of muddled sound or coarse highs that I experienced with the Aiwa. In fact, even the 2 channel stereo on the Yamaha unit blows the Aiwa away. I cannot believe I tried to save some bucks when I bought that Aiwa - big mistake.

The remote was rather weird - small buttons and a confusing as hell wheel. However, after a bit of patience trying to figure out how the thing works, I've decided that the remote deserves better than to be shot down by so many reviews here. While it's not a learning remote, it does very well in allowing me basic control over my VCR and DVD Player. If I need to change configurations on my VCR, I still need its remote, but for just play / stop / fwd, the Yamaha remote is fine.

My main gripe is that I wish there were an Auxillary input so that I could plug my computer to the receiver without using the Auxilary ports on the front... basically, I just don't want wires hanging off the front. The Aiwa unit had an AUX input perfect for MP3's, but with the 795a I have to use Audio Monitor - which doesn't really act as a conventional input.

I currently have the following speakers:
Front: Acoustic Research AR7
Center: Infinity CC3
Satellites: Klipsch Quintet
Sub: None - I'm in an apartment :(

Current Hardware Compontents:
DVD Player: JVC 555BK
VCR: Sony 799HF VHS
CD: Yamaha CDC675
Computer Sound Card: Turtle Beach Montego II

Price paid for unit:
$570 ($600 after tax)

Bottom Line: Great Value: You get what you pay for and it sounds great.

Strength:

Sound ! Sound! Sound!, features.

Weakness:

Have not dicovered any yet, yes I even like the remote!

To preface this review i must state that I'm coming out of a 10 year slumber from audio. Getting married and starting a family killed my appreciation for audio. I used to be quite "into it" earlier (80's. My wife can attest to it since she can't stand all of the 'vintage" equipment I have packed away in the basement (pioneer sx1980, SAE p100, jbl 150's, dual tape deck, teac reel.to.reel etc.)

Anyway, to make a long story short. I decided to get into home theatre and purchased the JBL hls series for surrounds (810 front, 610 rear, hls center) and topped with pswd112 sub. All of these were powered by a jvc receiver which I've had for 9 yrs. The sound was pretty good from this package. However, i had a craving to upgrade to DD and always had a respect for Yamaha (rememering their kick ass receivers from the 80's).

After research I narrowed it down denon 2800 and Yam. 795A. I can say that there was a diff. between the two, at times i swore the denon sounded better, then at times the yamaha sounded better. I decided on the Yamaha for price, rock solid quality / reputation and features. What an understatement! It was dramatic the diff. when I swapped out the JVC for the Yamaha! it was like a getting a whole new set of speakers, much cleaner, more impact, improved bass etc. I love the styling and ease of navigating through the features. yes, I even like the manual and remote!

I just got a toshiba 1200 DVD recently and I can't believe the quality/ impact of sound this receiver can dish out in 5.1, stunning!

The reviewer above me states that he will obtain a yamaha 775 cd player and use the optical out. My suggestion is to save app. $100 and get a cheaper unit (yam 575 ~ I have it. the reason is that when you go with the optical (digital)output it shoots the bitstream directly into the yamaha D/A converter thus bypassing the cd players own D/A unit, whay pay for an expensive unit when the player really is relegated to just a transport mech. I have done a lot of A/B testing between my yam 575 CD with analog out versus optic out (monster cable) and can notice a reasonably distict diff. The 795A D/A conveter is better than the CD players resulting in a sharper soundstage, tighter bass. Also to boot your signal is cleaner when you use a DSP field since you have by-passed an interim D/A converion.

One last mention. I do like the disco setting for certain uses, you must however turn down to minimum all parameters (liveliness, rev. time etc.)

Strength:

great sound and DSP fields. Excellent back panel set up, lots of connections

Weakness:

none so far

Got the unit about a week ago hooked it to Infinity sm 80 for mains infinity sm 65 surrounds. Right now using 2 bi-wired kenwood mini speakers for center will be switching to PSB center in a couple of weeks. Have no sub yet but going PSB also. Hooked it up to my digital cable box, hi fi vcr, 2109 dvd player and jvc tv. great hook ups instructions could be better but with a little trial and error got it all working right. The digital sounds great for dvd and the surround fields are pretty usefull. Though the church and concert hall are a little too echoey, may just need more adjustment to my room which is good size. It fills very well and sounds great at hi volumes but with the 70mm DSP modes for dolby digital you can turn it down and still get great effect disburtion in the room. I like the look of the unit and the onscreen display is good. The remote isnt that hard to get used to like I always say you need to be 10% smarter than the technology your using. LOL. will update when I get the sub and new center. Overall I cant complain about this compared to my 11 year old jvc and less than $400.00 this unit is the bomb.

Strength:

Very clean and crisp sound, plenty of power, price.

Weakness:

Umm.. the remote. Well, sortof.

After a few weeks of researching, reading and listening, I decided on this receiver to power my Energy Take 5's. The first thing I noticed is this receiver is heavy :). It seems
everyone likes the binding posts on the back, but I found them to be harder to use than the cheaper connections. After I finally got all the speakers wired in correctly, and got the Sub to work (replacing the optical with coaxial solved this problem, don't ask why, I don't know either), I put in The Corruptor and turned it up the the 10 o'clock position and let it roll.. It sounded great! Very clean sound. I got it for $500 locally, the dealer gave me a break because the box was slightly damaged. I didn't much care about the box :)

It has good controls, and a good look to it. The only problem I have is the with the remote, but not the same problem everyone else has. I was liking it alot until I tried to program my TV into it. All my other components
programmed just fine, but when it came time for my Toshiba CZ32V51, it wouldn't take 3 of the 4 codes, and the one it did take only controls the channels and the volume. I really need it to control the input signal, or else I will have to keep the TV remote out too, which is a pain. Has anyone else had this problem? If I can't get that little thing fixed, I will have to get another Universal Remote.
Anyone know where I can buy the all-for-one remote online,
or can anyone help me with the codes for my TV? Otherwise, this is a fantastic receiver, especially for the price.
