Strength:

Good price.

Weakness:

Remote. Switching

I only paid $500 for mine because it was on clearance, and had a small scratch on the face plate. So I got a good deal.

The remote is a pain. Yes I figured it out, but that does not mean it is easy to use.

I wish the receiver a video monitor switch to see what the VCR was recording would be helpful.

The S-Video switching is usless in my setup. The only S-video piece of queipment I have is the DVD player. Using this would still require that I switched my TV between composite and S-Video. I chose to wire my DVD's S-Video into my TV. I wired the composite from the DVD to the receiver. The end result is that I can watch DVD without without switching my TV's input if I am lazy. For that reson I set the OSD switch to composite.

I listened to CD's on the philips DVD player (digital input of course). I decided in the end that the DVD player and the receivers decoder wounded better than my old Yamaha CD changer. The BASS seemed a bit better using the DVD player. It was hard to compare the two because there was no way to keep the DVD player at the same level as the CD changer when I swithced between them.

The amp section is good, but not as good as my old Yamaha (RX-595?) stereo only receiver. My old receiver always felt like it had unlimited reserves of power even though it was rated at 60 watts. The older receiver probbaly had a better power supply, and only needed to drive 2 channels. In any case, 80+ watts is more than enough for my apartment. Possibly adding a subwoofer would help a little.

Musically, it sound pretty good when playing a CD through the digital output from a DVD player. The tuner section is good as it is on all their receivers. Yamaha seems to do a good job with their tuner...a fact that gets little mention from people :) No one uses their tuner?

I played with the DSP modes like everyone else. I use the Sci Fi mode for science fiction movies, and I like the result. I am not much of a film audio critic so I can't say much there.

In summary the Yamaha was a good deal at $500.

Strength:

Reasonable price, Overall great sound, user friendly

Weakness:

remote (un)control
less input
less coax

Overall, this product is good to great. Tons of DSP. Great for Home theater and musical. Easy to use. Affordable at high quality.

As everyone said, remote control suck. It ruins everything. Can't be used in the night. Also not comfortable even though there is enough light.

Less Coax. Why most of receiver provide only one Coax? Also less input. Why does it have to combine DVD and LD together in one input and also Tape/MD....huhhhh. Why can I do if I want to expand my system in the future?

Anyway, that's minor problem (but annoying) Let's look at its performance. I'm impressed!!! I'm not sure if I want this performance from other brand. Do I have to pay more? Compare this unit with Denon 3300, Pioneer Elite 24TX...both are more expensive. This Yamaha is reasonable.

Strength:

DSP Modes, Pre-out capability, Ease of setup

Weakness:

Amplification of mains, funky remote which kinda grows on you with time

I've recently upgraded (?) to a Home theater setup to serve dual purpose in watching movies and listening to audio. I did significant research and listening within reason and budget and decided on the new Yamaha RX-V795a. I was very happy with the sound of my original two-channel separates system with discrete Preamp, monoblock combo, CD player and Vandersteen mains. I considered the Vantas add-on but found the cost to get to Dolby Digital was not easily justified. For the same price (actually less) I could buy the Yammie with DD, DTS, Pro Logic, all the DSP modes, a built in Tuner which BTW works very well, a phono stage, and have 5 channels of amplification. I think the Yamaha works very well as a front end. In careful A/B comparison with my monoblocks (SWT Products, 80w RMS) the weak point is definitely the Yamaha's main amp section. The separation is weaker and the ability to distinguish position and depth in the soundstage is definitely inferior. Also vocals just don't sound right, a bit tinny and strained...... It also does not handle transients as well (perhaps limited power supply feeding all 5 channels). My solution which now sounds killer is to use the main Pre-out section of the receiver and hook to the monos. Use the center and rear channels of the receiver and simply volume match (very simple with the unit). I now have full control through the remote (difficult as it is to use) and my two channel audio needs are met. I'll also be able to recoup some dinero buy selling my preamp and tuner separates.

Recommendation: great as a front end....moderate to weak if you already have killer sound in a two channel system and are replacing the whole thing. If you have separates don't dispose of your amp(s) until you compare (something you really can only do at home in a controlled environment). Home theater effects are neat. Great for movies.....fair for audio....build quality looks pretty good...optical in's and binding posts for all speakers.

Strength:

Everything people have listed.

Weakness:

The remote, yes it is a terrible piece of technology.

I picked the 794a up to replace my Technics AX-710 (read the review, it's garbage). I went to a few stores to listen to what they had to offer. This reciever is great. For the dollar to value raio, the Yamaha 795a is best out there. 85 watts is plenty of power for the average joe and enough to piss off the neighbors. Yes it would be nice to have 100watts, but this reciever will keep me very happy for the next 2-6years.

5 Stars for Value because nothing else can touch it (for the price).

5 Stars for Overal because it's a very nice reciever and does everything I want it to.

Strength:

- Great sound and features
- QUALITY
- Low Operating Temperature

Weakness:

- Although the remote can do everything, the buttons are very small and can't be lit up

I was looking for a GOOD receiver to start a home theater setup. I was looking at several of the SONY models since I had always been partial to Sony. I was looking at the DE835, DE935 and the DA333ES. After doing a significant amount of research (including reviews on this site) as well as talking to "experts" I couldn't bring myself to buy the Sony with all the QUALITY problems they appear to have. The one common recourse that people were taking was to switch to Yamaha. I went with the model that gave me all the features that I wanted and found it on the internet for significantly less that the local stores. I finally purchased it for $565 (total) mail order which is more than the Sony DE models, but I feel better about the QUALITY.

So far it has performed great with all the features I wanted and runs very cool. The manual is pretty good and I've been able to figure out everything so far. Make sure you get the "a" version (i.e. 795A) as it has the additional inputs for DVD as the earlier model did not.

The remote would have been better had Yamaha figured out a way to do all that is does in a LESS compact form. It does everything I need it to do and also works my VCR, DVD, and TV but the buttons are very tiny and there is no light for it (i.e. buttons don't light up).

Although several of my friends went with the DE835, I am glad I went with the 795A and didn't mind spending the extra money for quality peace of mind.

Weakness:

Not enough inputs

I am using the 795A with a Toshiba 29" (100mhz) Tv, pioneer Dv-525, tannoy R2s, M1 (rear) and Mc (Centre)

The system sounds fantastic when playing DTS and Dolby Digital movies. The effects for the Matrix were wonderful while that for the Haunting were really good.

Musically, I am using the Marantz CD63 KI Signature and a Musical Fidelity X-10D. The vocals are very clear and musical and I have no complaints whatsoever.

Strength:

-DSP
-Lots of hook-up on back of unit
-clean power

Weakness:

-remote
-technical support
-manual
-am radio not clear (yet)
-base control is a bit low

I have used this receiver for approx. one week, and I find it is a very good unit, handling 85 watts per channel. I found no reason to go up to the 995, as 15 watts, and a learning remote, and mulit-room features were not enough to spend $300 more. The unit is very clean power wise, and has many hookups on the back side.It is also very easy to use the receiver, as the buttons on the receiver are ery clear to follow.
So far, the things I have disliked about the unit are all minor...first, the remote wheel has to go, it stinks, in order to turn off everything, you have to turn the wheel to the proper unit to turn it off, what a pain!, secondly, the manual, and the technical support for this product are very poor. The bass dial does not give out enough bass, but I heard that in time it comes around. The final thing I have not mastered yet, is the AM radio,I cant get the reception to come in clear yet, but hopefully I can fix this problem soon. Overall is this is a great unit for a great price, and I would tell people that this is a best buy..
