Strength:

sounds awesome on movies, also excellent in stereo

Weakness:

None yet

I purchased my DSP-A1 a few months ago,and it has worked great except a few things.I was wondering if anyone else has heard a static type type sound when you switch the bands up and down on the center channel EQ.This happens when you adjust the bands while watching movies. I also have heard a distorted sound from the center channel almost like the speaker is blown. This happens when you listen to music in pro-logic. I have been told that that is just the way it is and that I may be overloading the processor. These problems are not very major, and besides them I think it is very good product.I have compared the DSP-A1 to Sony and to several other Yamaha models. The DSP-A1 is by far the best. This is an excellent integrated amp for the money. It is the best out there right now but if there is any dispute the RX-V1 should quiet the Denon and Marantz lovers for a while.

Strength:

NEARLY ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE.

Weakness:

Minor: wish the lfe level setting was set according to source selection as are most other levels.

AWESOME.
I am not a purist (i.e. I don't think you need tubes to get 'natural' sound.). I am all for any new technology that makes things better. The seven channels is all I need to tell me this is better. What an easy a/b test. Effect on/ effect off. Wow, no comparison. Add DTS's 5.1 channels, what an experience! To me, this is a bigger advance than stereo over mono. I have a/b tested with b&k and adcom separates. BORING! Once you have heard DTS 5.1 enhanced with Yamaha's extra two dsp channels, NOTHING compares. It's like getting used to dvd video through a line doubler then trying to go back and enjoy an old worn out VHS tape on a 19" tube. The amps are actually way overkill. They didn't have em when I bought the dspa1 a couple of years ago, but I'd demo the less expensive models Yamaha has now.
NO REGRETS, maybe the best 'thing' I have ever purchased.

I didn't like the remote at first either. Then my kids lost my 'good' universal. I used the yamaha (i though until I could get a replacement for the one the kids lost). I spent some time actually reading the manual and imagine that, if you read the instructions, it turns out to be the best remote I have yet seen.

Set up is incredible. Yamaha has really thought out the setup.

I would recommend this to ANYBODY.

Strength:

The power and authority is there while watching DVD's on my rear projection tv.....This unit is used with my tuner but never used for CD enjoyment in my living room...I can say this unit envelopes me in the movie's everytime.....Spectacle is probably the best DSP mode......I outright have no regrets with this unit......It makes me proud to demonstrate when family and friends show up.....If somebody is looking for a intergrated amp especially for video's this is outright the baby to buy.....

Weakness:

My only wish i have with this unit is this......If Yamaha had included a port in the rear to be used with a computer for future upgrades that would have been great.....

As i had said before this unit makes me proud .....Everything seems so balanced and powerful.....Its that yamaha quality of sound(100 years of know how)b that captures me everytime while viewing the dvd's.....As long as dolby digital and dts is around this baby will rule....... NO REGRETS...!

I'm using the polk 6500 small speaker series and sub with this unit along with 16 gauge speaker wire ......Also the sony dvd 7700 with a extra subwoofer for the rear thats the psw 250.....NO PROBLEMS...!

Strength:

Huge array of DSP modes, covers nearly all combinations of digital and analog input sources, easy set up.

Weakness:

Klutzy remote, non user-friendly manual

I hope Yamaha officials are reading this.

The product is first rate and I had the greatest experience with the product after reading dozens of rave reviews. Eleven months from the day I bought the unit, it wouldn't turn on. It seems some circuit protection was taking place that after pushing the "on" button, the unit would light up but would black out after two or three seconds. I knew the AC line was good. The vagaries of the free market landed the unit I bought in November '98 in the so called gray market. This is a vast informal network of Chinese and Indian merchants who would source their DSP A1, probably in bulk, from somewhere in Asia (i.e. Malaysia?)and sell it at a hefty discount.

The bottom line is the local, authorized distributor would not do warranty repair as they had no record of my purchase and told me to work it out with the store I bought from. So the store takes in my unit and after three to four weeks they tell me that their contracted repair shop says the "main board" needed replacement. I insisted they take care of it since they (the store) promised a one-year parts and labor warranty. They took it to another contract repair shop and it took all of SIX MONTHS before they were able to obtain a replacement board from "official" Yamaha sources. Now I ask: is this any way to treat me, an innocent Yamaha product buyer simply because I purchased from "unofficial" sources. I say it is a genuine Yamaha product and Yamaha should not discriminate against any owner, regardless how he obtained the unit! And the cost of the repair? $400 (U.S.). The store and their source split the charges and later I split the store's share as well. End of gripe, unit playing flawlessly... but wait! Why did that main board (with the power circuit on it) need replacement after only eleven months? The repair techs reportedly said s..it happens, probably "one in ten"! Remember, they are not "authorized" techs. The burning question to my mind: "one in ten" means 10%! of Yamaha DSP A1's are gonna get hit with a main board problem!

Although I'm keeping my fingers crossed, the DSP A1 is still the greatest machine its touted to be. Four stars for the product and one star for Yamaha's worldwide distribution and customer service policies.

Strength:

Clarity of sound at high volumes and the bass it helps to produce in my Bose speakers

Weakness:

viewing some movies i've had to use other sound effects in order to get better quality sound instead of those areas designated for the particular movie i'm watching. Even if its a DVD movie.

From the moment I connected it to my speaker system (Bose 701s and accoustimass speakers) I was hooked! I love the clarity of the sound that's being driven through my speakers. Instead of being intimidated by the remote control that comes with the amp. I gave it to my twelve year old son and he set it up correctly. So, I guess its not as confusing as some have suggested. I am really in love with this system STILL! When I play whatever I'm in the mood for I know that I'm in for a treat. If only I didn't live next door to some folks that I'd say were anal retentive I'd really turn it up and give my speakers a good exercising. So far I've been able to turn it up just past half way. The only thing that disappoints me is the missing R&B sound effect but that's merely semantics. Although one could argue that R&B, hip hop and rap music are dominating and have been dominating today's music for quite some time and deserve it's own effect on future systems. Still, for the price and what it does it is definitely well ahead of competition.

Strength:

1) clean power, low distortion, quiet running, easyswitching between audio source material, infinite audio connections, ease of use, ability to customize.

Weakness:

VIDEO SWITCHING WEAKNESSES
1) No component video inputs or switching; (DSS, HDTV, DVD must run directly to projector).
2) No video switching capability for VCR recording from s-video source to composite video.

REMOTE WEAKNESSES
Awesome capability, but numerous controls hidden behind the front panel require patience and getting used to.

SET-UP
Requires use of balance control adjustment on the main unit to adjust SPL levels in front main channels, whereas all other adjustments can be made with the remote from the listening position. Would be advantageous to permit all SPL adjustments from teh listening position via the remote.

Unfortunately, some adjustments can only be made with the remote, so that one can not make these adjustments on the main unit. Occasionally a hassle.

No AM-FM Tuner.

This was one of my most important sytem upgrades.

Video and audio switching capabilities were as important as achieving excellent sound quality. I'm picky, I didn't want to go do the path of pricey separates. Yes you can find your dream system, but the rule of diminishing returns applied for me.

I knew it would be difficult to find my dream system in one component, still I tried. The Yamaha DSP A-1 fit the bill.

After reading as much as possible, establishing a price range, talking and testing with several dealers and attending Stereophile's Shows to review products, I settled on this unit. It has proven to be a good choice.

At the time I bought the A-1, Denon had not released their flagship 5700, which also received good reviews, but the A-1 provided a good match for my Atlantic Technology System 450THX.

Sure, the newer Yamaha RX-V1 has me thinking about an upgrade, but to get additional switching capability not found in the A-1 and a tuner with no improvement in sound quality, it's too high a price to pay.

Sure the 26/96 DAC in the RXv-1 is a nice feature, but with the broadcasting, satellite and and cable industry and consumers slow to accept HDTV, fire wire and still more connectivity in the converging communications world, I can't help wondering if high def audio will have an even slower adoption curve than HDTV.

With the economic pressures on the music industry from internet piracy, it will be decades before hi-def audio source material is plentiful, so the buzz about these mega DAC at 24 bit/96khz seems way ahead of the curve.

No doubt, even better receivers, new connectivity standards (at a lowerer price) will come along, and I expect the DSP A-1 will suit my needs beautifully for years to come until that day comes.

Now if only I could cancel my subscriptions to Stereophile, Home Theater, and WideScreen Review so that I could end this crazy addiction....help!

Strength:

Versatility (movies and cd's both work great)

Weakness:

Remotes a little akward at first, but learning capability is great

The is one remarkable piece of home audio or home theater(whichever you prefer) equipment. The external decoder inputs are perfect for my older Yamaha DSP-1 processor. Many of the "professional" testers (i.e. Home Theater Magazine-July 1998, DVD Resource Page, PRN wedsite..) have hailed it as the "reference" intergrated amp. They also compare it as "better than many separates costing quite a bit more" that they've tested. Of course with price as quotient it's phenominal for what it achieves in it's class. So separates "might" be better but they are not in the intergrated class and you damn sure won't find any as good or versatile as it for the $1,300-$2,500 price range the DSP-A1 has been sold for.
My $1,450.00 was very well spent! I've listen so many models over the past months (many in home-really nice audio store) before I purchased this amp, I can't say more about how good this thing really is!!!
I agree with a reviewer some reviews back. If you remove the anti-intergrated amp reviews, "I prefer brand X instead (go post your review for brand X there), or the one brand loyalist, you'd get quite large percentage of people who are like most here...We love the equipment for what it does...and it does it extremely well!!!!! Too bad because they delute the rating scale with garbage posts.
No doubt 5 stars

Strength:

Awesome capabilities and adjustments, almost enough inputs and outputs, slam with delicate detail and finesse.

Weakness:

Bad remote and headache-inducing owner's manual.

Greg in a few reviews back said it would not drive Martin-Logans. I am proof that this is not true. I have M/L CLS IIZ's in the front channel and Aerius' in the rear with Kinergetic Subs and a VMPS sub filling inat the very bottom. This is a very satisfying setup indeed. Everyone who comes over to watch X-files or a movie comments on how incredible the sound is. I felt it would never impress me this much, but it has! I highly recommend it, music is even listenable on it; though not as good as my tube gear which I often swap over to. The ability to upgrade the processor with an outboard unit or the amplifier section with a stack-o-amps is a real plus, but not really necessary. Believe everything you have heard about this unit... The DSP-A1 is that good, maybe even better.

Strength:

DTS, 5.1 channel decoding

Weakness:

Stereo Audio, Remote

I bypassed the DSP-A1 because of the poor reviews on the
stereo sound effects and I really expected more from Yamaha's flagship model. The remote is disgusting.

I don't care about DTS, but I wanted 5.1 channel decoding in a 7.1 channel system format, mainly because it will be replacing my DSP-A2070. The responses on the DSP-A3090 seem good - but I decided to wait for the DSP-A1 replacement.

Yamaha just announced that the DSP-AX1 will be released in March 2000 ... it looks like what I've been waiting for ... Yamaha's Dolby Digital/Matrix 6.1-channel surround format is featured and the remote is wonderful.

If only the stereo quality is as good as the DSP-A3090 ...
