Strength:

Impressive list of features. Great value for the $$

Weakness:

None at this price point

There's not alot more that I can say that hasn't already been said in the reviews below. It seems that the entire Rotel line gives you incredibly good performance at the price point their units sell for.

I bought the RC-995 after a somewhat dissapointing experience with the Anthem Pre2L (see my review). I bought the RC-995 on the used market for $435. Now I'm lauging all the way to the bank.

I am new to the "audiophile high-end" game, and the more research and listening I do the more discouraged I get.

There comes a point where to get notibly better performance, one must shell out some serious cash. The Rotel RC-995 sits right where this price/performance curve shoots towards the sky.

Although the front panel looks simplistic, don't let this fool you. It has seperate record/listen functions, headphone jack, phono-stage, dual pre-outs, balanced outs, 7 inputs. Volume, muting, input selection, power on/off can all be controlled via the remote.

Ergonomically, this pre trounces the Anthem, even though the Anthem is nearly double the price.....and yes, IMHO this pre performs every bit as well as the Anthem, both in detail and soundstage.

If you're looking to impress your audiophile buddies, go drop $8k on a BAT VK50SE. If you're looking for no-nonsense, good audio equipment that is affordable, look no further than the RC-995.

Strength:

Clarity, Quitness, Dependability, ect...

Weakness:

None that I can hear.

It's funny, I've never read a review on this preamp. In fact, I've looked and looked and could not find a review.
Anyhow, I listened to the very best that money can buy, but nothing I've heard has made me want to give this little beauty up. I've even brought home several 'A' rated preamps and rushed them back to the store! I'm not saying that this Rotel is the best. What I'm saying is that the difference between this unit and the very best is maginal in terms of passing the signal through undisturbed and this maginallity could go either way (better or worse) than these reference preamps.
Using the Balanced connections to the Amp was a stupendous improvement to the sound quality!
My system consists of Levenson, Cal Audio, Genesis, Quad, B&W, Marantz, Audioquest, Nordost, etc...
The point is: This equipment allows me to hear every component in the system. Every cable or wire change is very apparent through this preamp.
For instance: I had moved my STUFF! around and had inadventantly installed the AudioTruth cables backward between the DAC and the preamp. (AudioQuest says that their cables must be installed in only one direction.) I tried each cable (they are not marked for direction) and then reversed the connection to find the correct oreintation. It was childs play because I could easily hear the differences.
Not bad for a low buck preamp!
Anyhow, I think this is one of the best buys in audio. Invest the money you save from not buying an expensive preamp and invest it on a better front end (CD unit/Turntable).
I just saw where the price dropped to $700 USD. A bargin!!!

Paul's right. This is good, no nonsense stuff. All the inputs you need, well built and good value for money. The phono stage is a bit iffy (have to crank the volume up and the results are all a bit ho-hum). However, with CD and paired with the hairy-chested RB991 power amp, this certainly gives you bang for the buck.

Strength:

Very clear, acoustic music sounds great with this, for the price, you can't beat it

Weakness:

Only had it for a month...haven't noticed yet.

I've listened to my friend's AMC CVT1030 and I found the Rotel to be better sounding with no distortion heard what so ever. As compared with my NAD 114, there is no comparison. The NAD gets blown away bar non. This preamp is just so musical, and it seems to handle my NAD amp without any problem. This along with my B&W speakers just rocks. Well worth the price I paid.

I had an NAD 114 and it bonked on me. Tested the Rotel out for a drive and was convinced that this was it for me.

Strength:

Smooth Mids & Tight Bass

Weakness:

None thus far

Rotel wouldn't have been my first choice brand due to it's unknowiness to others available. However based on many reviews herein I found myself having to give this pre-amp ago with the purchase with the Rotel RB991 Power Amp driving KEF 104/2 Reference Speakers and i have to say that iam very satisfied with the combination. A great little preamp for the money and a remote to go with it. Easy to operate with phono stage etc..I listen to a varied source of music from Jazz'n Grooves to Beach House, Dub and a bit of Techno..It is most endured through the jazz stuff and you get to hear all the musical instruments quite amazingly. I'm sure this pre-amp will service me for some time to come. Highly recommended as they say if you can find one.

Very nice phono stage with no hum or buzz (used with my Sumiko BP / Linn Axis setup). Clean, get-out-of-the-way line stage, with convenient programable remote. Appears very well built. Have not yet used the balanced outs. Works very well with Rotel's separate RT-990BX tuner, although there is some tiny amount of leakage to other line stages if you leave the tuner.

Recently, I upgraded to the RC995 using balanced connectors from a RC972/RB981 combo. Immediately, I noticed how much better the detail, channel separation and more cleaner, and linear musical reproduction has become.
Overall, the DETAIL, SOUNDSTAGE, and the improved liquidy vocal reproduction is good but it still burnin-in so it could be better yet. I also checked out the phono stage and it seems to be very good. So far, the best I think my turntable has ever sounded.

It does however have some leakage when switching different components at higher volume levels and is lacking balanced inputs for the newer Rotel CD but I heard a new preamp from Rotel is on its way. This preamp did surprise me more than I expected. Great sound for a fair price.
