Sony STR-DE545 Receivers

Sony STR-DE545 Receivers

DESCRIPTION

With Sony's STR-DE545 driving your A/V system, you're in store for all the thrills digital home theater has to offer! This A/V receiver has super-precise, 24-bit processing built in for Dolby Digital and DTS. Pop in a 5.1-channel DVD and find out what the fuss is all about! This Sony also has the Dolby Pro Logic decoding you need to experience multichannel surround sound from sources like a HiFi VCR or stereo TV. With 100 watts per channel in stereo mode, or 100 watts x 5 in home theater mode, you get the multichannel power you need for sonic clarity, realism, and impact. Speaking of realism, the 'DE545's built-in Digital Signal Processing includes Digital Cinema Sound exclusive soundfield circuitry based on acoustic measurements made at Sony Pictures Studios movie production stages. You'll hear movie soundtracks the way the producers and directors intended! When it comes to connections, the STR-DE545 has you covered. You get 3 inputs for digital sources (2 optical, 1 coaxial), 3 A/V inputs (including one S-video, and one 5.1-channel input) plus 3 inputs for your audio-only sources. A second set of main speaker outputs means you can wire a deck, patio, or separate room for stereo sound

Strength:

Quality for price, but the protect mode problem makes it almost worthless.

Weakness:

PROTECT MODE!1

It would be a nice low end, budget receiver, but the protect mode comes on even when it is not very loud. Because of this, i have almost completley stopped using the receiver. It is too much of a pain to turn it on and off 50 times in the middle of a movie.

Strength:

Great sound, enough connectors, high power (100w DIN) and filled with functions.

Weakness:

The receiver unfortunately needs a repair to work properly (the hissing noice-problem) and I really hate the Digital Cinema Sound symbol in the display. It glows so ugly... ;)

When I saw it in the store, I thought it was the greatest low-end receiver I've ever seen. And so far I have yet to be disappointed. The first thing I noticed when I got home were the hissing noice that's so spoken of around here. This is not caused by bad connectors and such, which I first thought was the reason. I had returned a similar receiver a couple of months before because of the same reason. I didn't bother to try fixing at the time it, since I was so lazy. But after all, I ended up with a receiver in my backpack, on my way to the InsideService store. They replaced the IC on display board in the unit, and that didn't take long time at all. After a week (tops!), I hade my receiver in my shelf again. What's so good about this receiver then? The price is of course very good, but I actually don't give a damn, since I want GOOD equipment. And the 545 really is! Nice design, decent fell and packed with functions. I really don't want to go through this right now, so pleace read the tech specs or check out the unit for yourself. :) This is a great receiver and probably the best you can get in the price range! This receiver would have got five stars, if it wouldn't be for the necessary IC repair.

HISSING NOISE? Well, If you look down, people are complaining about the hissing noíse in this receiver. It's not the connections and it's not the speakers. It's a defect from the birth of the receiver. I got mine fixed at the InsideService center. All they had to do were to change the IC chip at the display board. I don't know if all 545's got this syndrome, but mine certainly had. Now, it's almost totally quiet and well worth it's money!

Strength:

price, sound quality

Weakness:

touchy protect mode!

I like my STR-545 receiver fine when it''s working, but it goes into PROTECT MODE when playing DVDs, anytime there''s a sudden jump in audio volume. Problem was bad at first, then seemed to ease up after the burn-in period. Then I diconnected & reconnected all the components to move it into an entertainment center, and now the protect mode problem is worse than ever!

Strength:

All the right connections (and how many people really use MD recorders? get with the times and start burning cd''s). Plenty of power, and great controls.

Weakness:

lacks some nice features of MUCH more expensive products, such as an on-screen display when hooked up to a television, but come on, do you really need that?

It''s hard to get good audio equipment when you''re trying to pay your way through college... Sony totally helped me out here (so did some shmuck who returned the thing to best buy for "hissing" which allowed me to purchasse it on an open box discount.) although this model doesn''t have the best signal-to-noise ratio ever, it does have the best one for the money, which should take care of most hissing problems. however, when people find a good deal on a reciever, they tend to be looking for one because they lack money... and where do they try to save money next? with connectors and speaker wire... BAD MOVE. even a super-low-budget KLH reciever will sound good when connected to a decent pair of speakers with QUALITY speaker wire. I wouldn''t use anything smaller than 16 gauge, and am using 12 guage monster cable now. This has certainly eliminated all static. as for hissing from surrounds in multi-channel configurations, that may just be hte source, many dvd''s are encoded with crappy multichannel signals, try replacing your speaker wire and finding a dvd known to have good audio signals. i hate to say it, but the best multichannel audio i''ve found on any soundtracks came from the movies "the patriot" and "blade"... check them out.

Strength:

Good Value, Very Ergonomic

Weakness:

Lots of Static, No Digital Out

I fell for the beauty of this unit as well as its price, but was fooled.
There is enough A/V inputs on this to suit my needs, but it lacks the ever so critical digital out, which forbids me from having a direct hookup to my MD deck.
Beware of Static: This unit is a virtual haven for snaps and hiss. Even through the headphone jack, there is a very audible static noise which can make quiet moments a real pain. It isn't so much of a problem when listening through stereo loudspeakers, but is VERY annoying in 5.1 surrounds.
On a positive note: this unit packs quite a bit inside for the price tag. The ergonomics are great, and I really love the setup of the thing.

But the static sucks.

Strength:

great power, nice looks, posative price with great features and of course, the almighty SONY logo.

Weakness:

I wish the volume dial was magnetic so it moved when u turned the volume up or down, thats all, great reciever.

This reciever doesnt lack much for the price, it has awesome power that lives up to its rating. Plenty of connections for all my audio and video sources, and a great SONY logo. For these low prices, how could anyone complain about anything on these recievers?? god, i havent had 1 glitch in my SONY stuff, so why is everyone sayin they have this hissing noise?? it isnt SONYS fault, its your connections and your speakers, which brings me to my next point, SONY is known for not blending well with other name brands of audio, when i got this reciever i knew i had to buy sony speakers if i wanted a good sound, think about it, the japs want you to but SONY and only SONY, they have ways of getting equipment of messing up mixed with other brands, so all of you with hissing....go buy some SONY SS-MB300H bookshelfs, mount them on the walls with a sub underneath your couch, and your sound will be as good as mine. Oh yeah, 1 more thing, dont buy the SONY tower speakers, they charge 100 more for just a port hole, you get all that and more through the bookshelf for just 100 bucks!!!! not only that but the bookshelfs are smaller and smarter!!!! well, im done, anyone wanna give me there highlights just e-mail me. PeAcE!!!
