Very good quality sound. Lots of input and output connections. Hundreds of useful and complex settings. Moderately simple to set up if you are not a master of sound systems.

Has no HDMI, only due to the fact HDMI was not standard when this model was released. The optical ribbon cables get lose over time and may cause speakers to crackle, hiss, or buzz.

Red843 Thank you very much. To anyone who has a problem with crackling, buzzing, or hissing in their speakers and uses a yamaha HTR-5460 read this. I have the Yamaha HTR-5460 receiver, and it has always worked well with my Sony surround sound speakers. After my last move from NC to PA the Yamaha receiver started causing the front channel speakers to crackle, hiss, or buzz when in enhanced mode or if the treble was up even a little bit. So i read a post on this site that said to check the optical ribbon cables inside the receiver. I went through a pushed down on all the ribbon cable connection points on the main board, and i had instant success. The receiver no longer produces a hiss or buzz in the front channel speakers and i can now use enhanced sound mode with the treble all the way on max. I am writing this review to help anyone else who may encounter this problem of hissing in their speakers. Check the optical ribbon cables inside the receiver to fix the problem it is a very easy fix takes less than 5 minutes. Do not waste your time sending the receiver to a audio repair shop for this simple problem. Just push on each of the ribbon cable connectors inside your receiver and it should work. They get a little lose over time i assume. Hope this helps.

Great Receiver after I finally fixed a Buzz/Chirping out of the fron speakers. I found out and fixed problem thx to a review I found reviewer here with same problem. It was a loose optical ribbon cable. I did not have my unit in shop for 3 months with no finding of problem like he did he really helped me alot. This must be a problem with some yamaha receivers since we both had same problem. Thanks so much ! Its all good now.

I''ve been using this receiver since August 2001, and I''m very happy with it. The bass extension boost is great for me since I''ve yet to get a sub. Sound is very clean and natural. Not too bright. It also has a phono jack for dorks like me who collect records and play them! Both music and movies sound great. Lots of options as far as HT goes. I knocked one star off the overall rating because I have heard better receivers, but this is the best you''ll get for under $500 in my opinion. As some reviewers have stated, the tuner presets are a little difficult to program, but you get used to it quickly. I don''t know why everyone complains about the remote. I actually think it''s ok, but I would never let the remote influence my purchase. My advice to anyone looking to buy this receiver would be to look online. I found it on the Sunshine Electronics website (look in Yahoo->shopping) for $259 and that INCLUDES SHIPPING! I also found this receiver at a number of stores online for under $300. So avoid those overhead costs and don''t get it at Best Buy. You''ll be much better off

Dynamic, natural sound.

Adjustments/programming requires a learning curve. Remote and instructions are a bit of a challenge.

The reviews for this product should properly be in the A/V receiver section but I found them anyway. I had an Onkyo receiver and found it to be very clear but just a little on the bright side. I think the new Yamaha "natural sound" concept is just right. The first Yamaha amp I tried was the 5450 but detected just a bit of distortion. I traded up within the Best Buy 30 day window to the 5460 and am quite satisfied. The specs on these products bear out what my ears detected. The THD on the 5460 is about 1/10 that of the 5650. I use my receiver for 2 channel audio and not HT. I have large Tannoy Saturn S10 speakers and with this amp I really rock my place. I use a Yamaha CD player connected via optical interconnect and get a mellow but clear sound. I am sold on Yamaha electronics now. Everybody that hears my system is impressed and is curious about Yamaha. The high end electronics audio industry is in trouble when mass produced stuff is this good. Dont go to a high end shop for electronics. It is a waste of time and money. I would still venture that there is value in high end speakers like I own. Perhaps mass production does not lend itself to the manufacture of the best speakers.

This receiver excels in so many areas. It''s not every day that I plunk down $469 for a piece of audio gear. This will likely be my last receiver. It''s just that good! I looked at Onkyo, Pioneer, Sony and Denon but the Yamaha provides the best perfomance and features for the money. To replace my trusty no frills Sony stereo receiver I wanted something which would switch video as well as audio. The Yamaha has all the S-video, component video, and optical audio inputs to keep just about anyone happy. The tuner provides better than average performance on FM and AM. There is a phono input for those of us who still play LP''s on occasion. Plenty of power for my Polk RT-400 front speakers and Yamaha surrounds. I can shake the walls and rattle the windows without a subwoffer. More than that the receiver provides plenty of distortion free power for movies and music. In looking at reviews for all the receivers no one likes any of the remotes. The HTR-5460''s remote isn''t awful and it''s not great, lets just call it okay. if you''re picky get a good universal remote. Yamaha says on their website the HTR-5460 is the same as the RX-V620. The only thing different is the marketing channel. I thought about this purchase for a long time and it came down between the HTR-5460 and the Onkyo TXD-595.

Very decent overall performance in this price range

Remote. Defect in subwoofer output

Very nice for the price. There is a selection on the menu that allows LFE output to go to the subwoofer, the mains or both. In my unit, specifying "subwoofer" did not send any signal to the subwoofer; however, specifying "both" did. I docked it one star for the defect.

Easy hookup, lots of features, digital audio hookup used from my DVD player which makes the entire experience awesome. Great sound in all formats, especially the 5.1 surround sound. Remote works very well and it was easy to program all the features I needed to have. More than enough power.

None yet that I have found but I am not a serious audiophile so maybe I'm just not picky enough.

Enough said above. The rest of my system is a Toshiba 9200 DVD player, a Philips 34" 9847 widescreen, flatscreen TV, all JBL speakers, and the Pronto remote to round it out, not to mention the MOnster power center 3500, which every component is plugged into for line conditioning. I am one happy camper and hopefully will be for a long time.

This is my first surround sound receiver.

Exceptional sound, easy to set up, great remote, back panel well designed (inputs, outputs etc)

LCD panel is a little to dim to read from a distance, but does have on screen display so no biggie.

After owning a couple of different Pioneers and my last receiver being a JVC I was amazed at the sound quality. All my speakers are Bose, except my subwoofer it was an infinity, which were used with all the receivers so I was really shocked at the difference in sound. I liked it so much I went and bought a Yamaha YST-SW160 Subwoofer to go with the receiver.

Could'nt be happier, I dont think you could find a better receiver with out spending twice as much.

First of all, for the last reviewer. Sears has a internet price matching policy, and you can find it for much cheaper than retail, 332.00 to be exact. Just keep that in mind for your next audio purchase. Now the receiver. The wattage rating, 100X5, is a true full-bandwith rated wattage. Yamaha rates all their receivers using the true 20-20000 rating. I can really feel the power, the bass, and the bone chilling highs, when this is cranked up. At
-45 it is fairly loud, and anything above that is insane. The sound is clear, with a very spacious, transparent sound with no discolorations. Well defined and punchy bass is present along with a seamless transition between each of the five speakers in my home theatre setup. Some soundfields are basically useless, aside from 5 channel stereo. It also has a wide open soundstage. Of course DD and DTS are absolutely amazing, with great channel separation and clarity. Just watch Armageddon, The Matrix, or Metallica S&M dvd, you wont just hear the soundtrack you'll feel them shake your couch. The tuner is substantial along with cd play. Overall a great bargain for 332.00. If you are looking for a sub-500$ receiver, this is the best one out there. Pick it up today, oh, yeah at SEARS
