Weakness:

drawer will not open-it acts as if a cd is in it when there is not

The player gave me trouble on the 1st day. I had a certain cd that it would not play even though all other players I tried would, including other gcd 700's. I got no satisfaction after making a phone call to Adcom. I have started using my old Toshiba again(purchased in the 80's).

Just got a demo unit from the good guys last week. The sale manager named, Russ, is very nice to sell me this unit as low as $200 out of door including 4 years extended warranty ! What's a deal ! Well! This is a awesome unit at that price range ($700) ! I just recapture lots of detail I 'd never heard before !Even though those CDs I 'd heard thousand times before, they all come alive !
I have tried my all time favour Mary Black 's CD -- No Frontier. It is amazing !
The sound stage is very rich and deep. Then I try another HDCD from Faye Wong(Love the stranger only), and I cannot really tell whether it is HDCD decoding or not ! One lovely feature ,I should mention about it, is the extra variable audio ouput. I do agree that the build quality of this CD player is not quite solid. But with the sound quality and the price I paid, I will give it five stars! Highly recommended for those music lovers !
Here is my modest electronics setup:

Onkyo Integra P304/M504 (Preamp/Power amp)
Onkyo Integra E35 (Equalier)
NHT 2.9
Monster Cable reference serie

Strength:

Convenience of a changer, coax digi out

Weakness:

Artificial sounding, harsh highs, no power button on remote

I bought a used GCD 700 about a year ago upon re-entering the hifi arena after a several year hiatus. As a changer, it works flawlessly, disc change is smooth and relatively quiet, I believe it's based on a Denon. I had the old version with the terrible remote (extremely bad off axis performance, poor placement of certain buttons); I'm sure the newer model has remedied this problem. The unit has fixed, variable, and coax digi outs, all gold plated. Build quality is average/good.

In terms of sound quality, I must say I expected more from a $700 (new retail) cd changer. Regardless of which speakers I used (Celestion, then Paradigm Reference Studio, now Energy), the Adcom always sounded a bit artificial (vocals especiallY) and on the harsh side to me. Imaging is good, but soundstaging seemed shallow. My Prism II puts it (and many so called newer audiophile cd players) to shame -- vocals are much more natural, sound is more smooth. Of course, system matching could be key -- if your system is laid back and "dark" the Adcom may be a perfect match, avoid brighter speakers/amps IMO. But you can always upgrade w/a an outboard DAC to suit your taste, then you have a decent 5 cd transport.

If you can pick up one of these used for about $300 and need the convenience of a changer, the GCD 700 is worth a try, although a new Denon DCM 370 w/18 bit Burr Browns (the Adcom uses 20 bits in ladder configuration) and HDCD (which the Adcom lacks) is $100 cheaper. Three stars because it is an average player for the money. I sold mine and bought a Cambridge CD4SE for my second system.

Strength:

exceptional clarity and warmth

Weakness:

slight tray noise, if that's a weakness

Great player for 700.00 dollars. Extremely warm and smooth. Closest thing to tube-like that I've heard for under two thousand dollars. Have had this player for five to six years and have never ever had any problems with it. Great looks and features, but most of all just great sound. You won't find a better sounding player for under a grand.

I recently pulled another boner in life that really paided off. I had a Yamaha multiple disc player that stopped fast forwarding and going to commanded songs. I took it about and said, time for an ADCOM. I bought the ADCOM GDC-700, plugged it in and wow what a sound. I really heard not only new sounds from my collection, but the phasing and spatial difference between them. Of course I went on and replaced a belt in my Yamaha and it works fine. You know the storey, the wife needed to see something broken. Anyway, I put them side by side and confirmed what I found. I would give it a five but I think I will reserve that for thoese mythical pieces of stereo stuff we can never afford.

Strength:

Design style, simple controls & remote, variable output

Weakness:

Loud mechanism, slow to respond to button pushes, drawer does not "lock" closed.

Another purchase based on good reviews. I also was planning on purchasing all Adcom components so this was the logical choice in CD player. I had a Sony CDP-750 since 1987 or so and it was acting up and I wanted a good unit at a decent price as well as a 5-disc changer. This was it.

So far this unit has not failed to deliver great sound across the board. It does NOT play all discs though and I don't know why. Example: Van Halen's first album will just not play at all though it plays fine in my DVD player and portable CD player. Perhaps the Adcom needs service?

The drawer SEEMS cheap but so far works fine though the changer mechanism in general is pretty noisy. I added a component to my system and as I repositioned the Adcom, the drawer just fell open, unlike my Sony where the drawer remained shut. I don't know if this means the drawer is broken or just lacks a "lock" when closed.

When turned on, the unit checks to see if there are any discs in the drawer even if there are none and it does not open right away when I hit the OPEN button which is anoying.

I thought the price was a bit high but the Adcom just keeps impressing me.

Otherwise, this is a pretty good unit I plan to keep for a long time.

I used to be one of the ones who thought all cd players sounded the same. WRONG!This adcom GCD-700 brought my system up to "audiophile" quality. When I close my eyes, I sometimes find myself sneaking one open, just to make sure there are no musicians in the room with me. (only on very good material, mind you). I really don't understand why some "purists" would gainsay the GCD-700. Taste, perhaps? Something in their childhood? The Adcom is there, with the best of 'em. A la Stan Lee, " 'nuff said".

Have owned unit for 1 year now but have to agree with Rich Steele of build quality. Unit racks out of shape and skips if using any add on spikes or feet. Unit was sent back in 1st month for repair of internal traking problem. When one disc was playing and drawer was opened to add more discs, unit would go to the extreme skip-fuzzy mode until drawer was retracted. Also, this is the most lame remote I ever used. Signal cannot be picked up unless very close to axis. Great sounding unit for the money - but the mechanics leave alot to be desired. For same sound and extremely fantastic remote and build quality check out newCAL DX2. I will switch rather than fight. Stars are for sound only.
