Sound, access speed, build & Coax Digital Output
Weakness:
Somewhat noisy tray when changing discs This 5 CD Changer is the best you can buy for the price. The Adcom's sound is superior to all other changers I've auditioned. It is particularly good with Jazz & Rock. The Adcom's rear panel gives You the choice of Fixed or Variable outs & Coax digital out which surpasses the usual inferior Toslink. Strength:
-very good sound, very smooth
Weakness:
-poor build quality; it has had to be repaired twice A very frustrating unit. The sound quality is very good for the price, especially on vocals (Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday), with words and notes decaying in a very organic (?) and natural way. However, the unit had to fixed twice, once by the dealer and once by Adcom. Each time there was a a grinding sound as the tray opened and closed. The second time the tray would not open after a CD was finished playing. The Adcom CS rep was helpful and polite, but I could not suggest anyone buying unit without getting an extended warranty. This is very dissapointing, as I need a new power amp and had been considering Adcom as a choice. Similar Products Used: Arcam/ NAD mid-fi |

The Adcom CD player is not a particularly good player for the price. CaliforniaAudio Labs builds a much nicer product for the same money. The soundstage of |

I think you'll best grasp how I feel about the Adcom Cd player by knowing the rest of my system. The amps are the awesome PASS LABS 1.2 monoblocks, the speakers are the spectacular Eggleston Works "Andra", my interconnect and speaker cables are the truly wonderful MAGNAN cables, and I use the Chang "Lightspeed" power conditioner plus some tweaks. Total cost: $38,000. Why then use a $700 CD player? Afterall, it's what supplies the source signal. Because everything I've tried from Krell to Mark Levinson to Sonic Frontiers to Wadia to Spectral to Audio Research, and others, doesn't markedly outperform the Adcom, even at over 10 times the cost. Don't be fooled by price, if you know how to set your system up, this player will deliver all the digital you'll ever want for. Now I'll let you in on a little secret. I actually bought the Adcom to use only as a temporary Cd player until I could find a truly high-end player that would compliment the system I described to you above. To date, and even after attending the Stereophile show in San Francisco, I haven't found such a player. However, in about a week I'll have the new Theta Digital "Miles" CD player to audition against the Adcom. I've heard from some reliable sources that the player is really good. One interesting thing Theta does, though, is use variable output in the analog domain, rather than the digital. Anyway, we shall see. As for the Adcom GCD-700, it's a no-brainer. Go buy one and enjoy, it's that good! |

I owned this cd player 3 months ago, and I really enjoy it every single day,I like classical music and rock pop, it sounded great on either, and for the price is a big contender, added the great feature to exchange discs while one is playing, but rather than any other feature i just buy it for the way it sounds, i have it connected to a DSP3090 from yamaha and using an LS50 from polk and a velodyne sub, the DSP capabilities on the Yamaha are good, but some times it sound much better, more alive in plain stereo, i like for instance the sound of a piano in a good recording,it is very lifelike it seems to be just in front of me. |

This is a solid CD player that holds 5 Cd's. It comes with a remote. The sound is smooth and full. Can be found for less than $600. You won't need a seperate transport for this player. |

This 5-CD changer has a real solid feel to it. It performs its functions rapidly and flawlessly. The sound is very natural. Upon A/B comparison with my Sony Laser Disc-CD Player, this unit won hands down. A great value for an audiophile-quality CD changer! I highly recommend it. |

My ADCOM GCD-600 carousel CD changer is about 8 years old now and one piece away from being the oldest component in my system. I'm about to embark on a review of my CD/Tansport/DAC setup, along with my preamp, to see which will offer the largest performance upgrade for the aprox. $5000 in my piggy bank today. As I was reviewing the comments on other equipment I decided to check out the comments on my ADCOM (bet you do the same thing - - - right?). Anyway, I was puzled to read several reviews carping about the real or perceived lack of quality in the transport system. Now I haven't used the 700 series so its possible that quality has slipped. (This seems to be a recurring problem in the Hi Fi industry for some reason). But baring a slip between the 600 and 700 I can't possibly agree with the comments by my fine audio friends who knock the ADCOM mechanical reliability and remote functionality. I think I can pretty well trump ANYBODY on the question of the ADCOM 60 transport reliability with this one: My teenage daughter, along with a zillion friends, use my system on a regular basis. She has had a succession of at least 6 boom box and small Circuit City type systems in her room and has broken them all. The worst that she or her friends could do to my ADCOM was to jam a disk a few times by pushing the carousel shut rather than letting the machine work as designed. The ADCOM took it like my BMW takes potholes - no complaint and no damage. So even though the DAC may be ready for an external upgrade (which the old ADCOM girl will accomodate by the way)I don't think I can expect any better reliability from the transport system at any price. Rating of 4 for my ADCOM-600. Other components are McIntosh (AMP/PA) and ML SL3's. By the way, for those of you who are not responsible for bringing up a teenager these days: its a painful but small price to pay to allow a teenager to gather around my sound system at home to avoid the trouble and anxiety that driving around town offers. |
