Strength:

Easy to operate-typical plug and play. Performs superb as a transport.

Weakness:

For the price I paid for it - I do not know. Priced like a Pacer runs like a Ferrari [when used as a transport].

I purchased my first CDP 1000 5 years ago and logged in an enormous amount of play time as a transport. The manufacture date was 1995. I wanted an upgrade and I compared it with the Sonic Frontiers SFT-1 Stereophile Class A $2000, played Mursgorsky's Picture at an Exhibition and Diana Krall. The old aging Parasound CDP 1000 WON big time with meatier notes and better soundstaging and layering. SFT-1 was as slow as a snail. Six months ago I started noticing the left channel as more prominent and the soundstaging askewed. That is when I started looking for a replacement. Audio Advisor had a special on it for $199. Grabbed it. Plugged it and I was amazed how musical it was. This was CDP 1000 manufactured in 1998. The 1998 was so much better in every way than the 1995 version. The one I currently have can probably go head to head with a Theta Data. My 1995 CDP 1000 is going back to Parasound in Frisco
for repair.

The Parasound is feeding MSB Link DAC,Anthem Pre 1-l, 300B Manley monos...the usual boring tubed audiophile stuff, you know DA KIND and Silver cables, of course [of course]...

Strength:

Balanced (somewhat bright) sound once you get unit that actually works.

Weakness:

Poor quality control at the factory (but compensated by the exceelent return policy).

I truly enjoy this player. However, my first unit did not recognize CD's and had to be returned. No fuss, the old unit was replaced immeidately, and the new one is great. I've had it for two years now and laugh at all of the people who paid twice as much for half the quality. The sound is very balanced (maybe a litle bit bright), so its a great choice for "eclectic" listeners who play a variety of musical styles. The much-bemoaned skipping problem comes from folks who aren't willing to spend the additional $300 for a good quality stand (you should be ashamed of yourself if you don't, anyway). Overall, this is the best-valued unit in the price range (and better than most at twice the cost).

Strength:

Clean and full sound stage, coax digital output

Weakness:

no shuffle play

This is a refurbished unit I bought online from a auction for $166.00. A great sounding unit when hooked up with the digital output, good looking and solidly built. Even at $495.00 it is a good deal.

Strength:

Detailed, smooth, very musical, exceptional sound for the money (value)

Weakness:

Build quality. Does not handle scratched CD's very well

I bought mine used and it had a skipping problem.
This is the fix I implemented.

There is a platic arm that holds a magnetic ring
inside the player. This arm folds down to clamp
the CD when the drawer closes. Once down it comes
extremely close to the surface of the spinning CD.
In my case it was rubbing on the CD. I super-glued
a thin piece of plastic (

I purchased a CDP-1000 last month. The build quality seemed great, there are some decent reviews commenting on the good sound of the unit, and the price happened to be right, so I went for it. I have an older player that I've had for 12 years, a Nakamichi OMS-2A, and have been wondering how for digital technology has progressed in a decade. I burned the unit in for two days before I sat down to listen, and I was stunned. The sound was blah.....dynamics were gone, the sense of air and space completely disapeared. I was very relieved when the dealer took it back. My hopes were very high, I knew the player was solidly built, and I liked its looks. As a transport, it might very well be an excellant purchase, but as a player it sounds castrated, and I would not recommend it as a stand alone player....a $100 job would sound better.

Strength:

Built like a tank, smooth tray, anologue like sound devoid of grain, wide soundstage.

Weakness:

Cheesy 80's Zenith cable box like remote, doesn't play cd's unless they're spotless. Remote lacks power and eject buttons.

Great player and a bargain price. My only major gripe is the fact that I have to clean the few specs of dust off the odd cd before the Parasound will play it. Highly recommended. Makes a great transport too.

Strength:

Excellent detail for the price. good dynamics. Excellent transport for the price.Well built.

Weakness:

A little bright. No random mode.

The review avereage of this product is much higher from people who actually listened to this player and not the ones who are bitching about it not working straight out of the box. I dont blame them though,I would be choked also. I have had mine for over a year and have no problems with it. If you get one, just make sure you can return it. An excellent sounding player for the price, if you can find a good used one for ar 200 or so.

Anyone who thinks the Rotel or Marantz 67 sounds better is on crack. I purchased mine after numerous auditions (Arcam, Marantz, Rotel, AMC, NAD,etc.), and couldn't be more pleased. I took the advice from one of the reviews above and left it on all night the first night. I have had NO skipping problems whatsoever. An added bonus--I purchased it for $239.99 NIB from the Stereo Trading Outlet in Jenkintown, PA. I think he has one more as of 6/15/98.

This is a follow up to my review below. At first I was cautious to give this player 5 stars as I hadn't heard anything to compare it to. Well I listened to several DAC's and players in this price range ($500) and I can say without reservations the Parasound beat them all hands down. To call this player harsh or lacking presence you must be a die hard vinylphile or car audio freak. 5 Stars for outstanding value and build quality. I've had absolutely no reliability problems either. A shame Parasound called it quits for their cd player line.

This is a nice player for the money. However, as others have pointed out, this player skips somewhere around the first minute into the first track of most of my CD's. I had my first unit replaced for this and the SECOND UNIT SKIPPED TOO. I have never had a cd player with all the skip problems this unit has had. HOWEVER, it does sound good when it does not skip. If anyone has ideas on why this may be occuring, please E-mail me. I would appreciate it. I would recommend the Rotel players(940, 950) if one were shopping in this price range.
