This is an updated review from the one I sent 7/1/2000.

Well finally, I lost the sound on the left channel - somehow
I knew this was coming.
What has dissapointed me a little is that I sent and email
to sennheiser.co.uk explaining the problem, and after 2 weeks I did not get a response.
I phoned the accessories company, as given on their wesite, and enquired about replacemant cables and earpads.
£25 for a new cable - £30 for new earpads - BLIMEY - a bit
expensive.

Well anyway, I missed these headphones so much I bought a new pair, I'm breaking them in at the moment.

I still rate this as a top notch pair of headphones, for the money - but SENNHEISER - sort out the problem with the cable.

I first switched to Sennheisaer from Grado since my Naim CDX/Nat03/52/Hicaped Headline/250/Royd Albions with Wilson Benesch Triptych and Asside stands was having some trouble with the grados. I liked the pulsy beat to the Grados but they were at war with the Naim Headline amp and I went through three amps and two sets of Grados (in one case the amp would blow, in the next the headphone) before I got fed up. There was obviously a destructive mismatch between the naim and Grado products and it was time to change. When I first bought the Sennheisers I thought they sounded a bit polite and remote, even flat and tinny. But they were very smooth and detailed to an extent the Grados never were. When I recently upgraded to a CDX/XPS I had no idea what I was in for. I had tried the combo when I had a 102/supercap/180 and thought the bass was muddy and overblown and ultimately I sent it back and got a 52 instead. What I hear now through the Albions is quite stunning, but the bass bloat is still there. What I hear through the Senns is another story. They completely crush the Albions and although these are fine speakers I now see that they are the weak link in my system (after all, my stands cost more!).

The flatness and overally dry presentation vanished and was replaced by a full three dimensional universe. The bass is smooth and detailed without an ounce of distortion down to the lowest lows. Tracks that boom through my speakers scintillate with details from the nether regions. I once thought that the Senns were dry and uninvolving compared to the Grados. I now see that the Grados are muddy and tonally dark and ultimately colored and lacking clarity. Whatever I listen to is quick, clear, fluid, alive with that analogue sound that only the CDX/XPS, CDS 2 and Linn CD 12 can get out of a disc. I can pump up the volume all the way (!!!) without ANY distortion. I have never heard music this great before. Never. The only sad thing is that I have an affection for the albions but now see how much they are limitting the performance of my top-notch naim electronics.

I would only buy these phones if you have a competent source and preamp. Before I had the XPS I would have prefered the Grados as they gave the naked CDX a little more oomph and warmth than it has. I am fortunate that the Grados proved to be incompatable with naim electronics since the Senns completely eclipse them. In a 50 K system this is a steal at 700 bucks. If you had a cheaper system, I'd seriously consider something that is less revealing or you may be dissapointed.

By far the best headphones I have ever owned......

These puppies produce some dynamic soundfield....
They are so easy on the ears in every way!!!!
bass is rich and well defined.....

The highs are crisp, and don't give you that sharp cutting sound that you get with cheaper headphone....

The sound quality is the best I have ever heard in a headphone. At $300 dollars this is a good price. I agree the near perfection of these headphones offers more accurate sound than expensive speakers. Definite 5.

Strength:

F***ing WOW. Not even sure where to start.

Weakness:

Will make any regular set of speakers in your house sound just "plain" in comparison.

After recommendations to go with Sennheiser, I went with these bad boys. I don't have a local dealer, but with the majority of the reviews on this website being positive, I figured I couldn't go wrong.

I just got them today. I'm writing the review as I listen to Elvis Costello's "King of America." I've never heard anything like it. It sounds like I'm in the studio listening to him recording the album. The detail is amazing. The sound is very bright and crisp (sometimes a little TOO bright, but I'm sure that will go away once they've been broken in as others have mentioned). The bass level is just right...with no noticable distortion.

As for build quality, I'm not sure what people are complaining about. They seem very solid to me and are by FAR the most comfortable pair of headphones I've ever worn. You can tell just by looking at them that they're comfortable. I've been wearing them for the past three hours and am showing no sign of discomfort. I don't even notice them after they've been on for a while.

I gave it a value rating of "5" because I only paid $200 for them (less than most I've noticed...I think it's because I bought them direct from a dealer in Germany, where they're probably less). But knowing how they sound now, if I had had to, I would have paid more.

Strength:

Oustanding distortion free, detailed, clear sound. You can hear absolutely everything perfectly

Weakness:

What in the world is wrong with these things- the left driver keeps cutting out...

Very Draining. Elation with a product mixed with buyers remorse.

Let me start off by saying how incredible these phones sound. I don't think anybody could ask for more, save a little lower bass extension. What I can't figure out, is why Sennheiser builds such a great sounding headphone, but something as trivial as a short stymies it?

I took a leap of faith that this 'problem' that is well known had been taken care of, and was told same by Headroom. Well it hasn't. 2 months into my purchase the left driver would cut out when- get this- I would simply stand up!! No undue stress on the cord, I paid the utmost in attention and care to avoid this problem.

To make a long story short, I have sent them into Sennheiser for repair, and the phones came back with a new cord. Worked fine for about 4 hours then the left driver took another vacation. And yes, it closed the door and left me behind... WHEN I STOOD UP FROM THE COUCH!!! Let me stress again, that I wasn't standing on the cable pulling it, etc. Checked the continuity of the new cable and it's just fine. There is something strange going on with the driver.

Anyway, buyers beware. I wished I had purchased the 590's- I believe this problem is nonexistent on these. I hate to degrade the rating of the HD600, but they have truly let me down.

Weakness:

A bit Light in the Bass

All i would say is WOW. These Headphones are worth every penny. OK they are not cheap, but you will need to pay A LOT more money in high quality Amplification and Speakers to get even near the listening experience of the HD600's.

Totally Uncolored compared to the closed designs, Superb Clarity, Resolution, Dynamics, and Speed.
Really Amazing througout almost throughout the frequency Range. Midrange is a Revelation, and Treble is FAR Better than any Speaker i have ever heard.
The only downside is that they sound a bit light in the Bass, but this is probably because they resolve Transients so Lightning FAST. Listening to Test tones confirms that they DO actually go well down below 20Hz.

This is one of the BEST Purchases i have ever made.

The 600's are very good 'phones. I couldn't seem to get them to play at the SPL level I like with the EarMax tube amp. Either that combo is a bit of an impedance mis-match, or it was the interconnect's I was using (MIT 330), or both.

I sold the EarMax, although it is a fine-sounding unit. So for now, I'm just using the 600's for record monitoring, and out of my PowerBook when playing games or listening to CD's, DVD's, and downloads. And I've never heard my computer games sound better!! ; )

I'm soon to purchase another 'phone amp to better match the 600's.

4.5 stars overall when everything is considered. There will always be a better sounding unit out there that would rate a 5.

Strength:

Absolutely incredible sound.

Weakness:

They come with a very skinny cord that I find myself needing to unravel every other use.

I wanted to get a really good set of phones to replace my old set which, by the way, sounded damn good for $30. My first thought was to stick with Koss, but after spending countless hours reading reviews on who knows how many different phones, I settled on the Senn's. How was I to know that these cans would make me scoff at my home speakers? One word description:Unbelievable. Seriously, you need to check these out for yourself. Don't be scared by the price, you won't be sorry. Some say that these are too bright, some say that the bass could use some work. I agree that on SOME music the the treble is a bit high. Big deal! If I have to turn the treble down a notch once a week to enjoy the musical reproduction that these phones deliver, no problem. It's a small price to pay. I do not however, have any qualms with the bass, they go low, and do so with precision and a thump normally only felt by good home speakers. I also experienced the often mentioned issue concerning the fit and/or weight being uncomfortable. That only lasted 1 day, I have had no discomfort since. I would recommend the addition of a headphone amp paired with a good set if interconnects to all headphone users, regardless of the headphones being used. They do make a difference. I have a Creek OBH-11 fed by a set of BetterCables IC's. This setup even made a set of 12 yr. old phones come alive. As much as I love these phones, I do plan upgrading the cord with a Red Jaspis from Clou. Bottom line: I'm glad that all the time spent researching paid off. Very happy w/ the 600's.
