Strength:

The most awesome headphones i have EVER heard.

Weakness:

none what-so-ever

I totally recommend the HD 600 phones. I have had them for over 4 weeks in my studio and love them. I often use headphones 6/7 hours a day and so comfort as well as quality is important. The 600's are comfortable although i needed to stretch them out a bit at first. The only down side i could say is..once you get used to these phones...any others you use sound unclear. A down side if like me you have only one set of these beauties and other people are monitoring mixes on Beyer D's etc

Go Buy!!

Strength:

strong balanced sound

Weakness:

over powering at times

After upgrading my stereo system from Yamaha separates with Polk Audios speakers to Audio Research pre-amp, Aragon amp with Martin Logan speakers, my hearing changed and my late 1980's AKG head phones sounded restricted. In other words; time to buy new head phones when the wife gets tired of listening to my music via the speakers. I was rather impressed with the Grado Sonata cartriage on my Rega turntable and thought of buying their top of the line Reference head phone, but they were hard to find. Then one day while walking thru a local mid-high end audio store, they had a stand with most of the major Sennheiser head phones. I bought and have been using Sennheiser microphones while recording Orthodox Christian sermons at my church, and was rather impresed with their durability. I tried the 580's head phones from the stand and then went down the line until the lower value head phones. WOW, the 580's were balance and clean, while the 570's (I am guessing at this, the next one down) were boomy. Then the highs started losing it with the lower head phone series. Under 200 dollars the Sennheiser's started to sound like my AKG's. I asked the salesman for the 600's and he had to get them from the back room. We took the 600's and the 580's and pluged them into a Merdian DVD player and another WOW, the 600's out played the 580's while not adjusting anything on the DVD player. The sound was way louder, balance, and clear, therefore I bought the 600's. Right now I am burning them in at home with Russian Vesper music via my Pioneer Elite CD recorder. I have tested the head phones with all types of music and the one that sounded the best was "Happy the Man", a late 1970's progressive rock group. I never heard the fine detail of the Cymbals and the separtion of the instruments before. The cord is rather long but doesn't get in the way as some reveiwers state, but then again, every head is different. I think they are a great buy if one is willing to go for the 450 price.

After 5 years of faithful service, my HD535's were showing signs of wear and tear (intermittant cable connection, deep bass buzzing) so I researched alot of headphones on this site and others. Initially, I bought the MDR-V900's, but discovered that I much preferred the lack of left channel and buzzing to the cacophony presented by the "top" Sony consumer model. What a disappointment!
The HD600's were definitely worth every penny I pilfered from my kid's college fund. Having grown very fond of my 535's, I was pleased to note how similar these two Senn's sounded, except for the extreme registers, which is where the 535's were lacking.
The problem, though, is with the soundstage, which is an inherant problem with all headphone listening. While the HD600's are very good reference cans, they still require a headphone amp with crossfeed and delay to (at least partially) correct the sonic havoc created when music engineered for listening in a room with speakers is squeezed into two headphone transducers. Some of my favourite recordings I cannot tolerate on headphones because of the spatial chaos. While it's true you can rediscover some recordings with a really good pair of headphones, it is true in spades with a good headphone amp.

Strength:

Comfortable
Sounds Good!!

Weakness:

Cord.

I can’t add much to what has already been said. Some of the previous reviewers have mentioned about the sound being “metallic.” I found that after about 20 hrs of use this disappeared. Perhaps I also got used to it. The bass is a bit light, it goes low but not heavy. This headphone will reproduce music as it was meant to be heard. If your taste is bass heavy dance music your better off with AKG, Audio Technica or my second favourite pair of cans, Sony 7506 which I use with my portable MD.

You don’t need a headphone amplifier for these pair of cans to sound good. I use the headphone jack on my Arcam 8R amplifier.

My one and only gripe if the cord. It goes to both ears and hence is a V-shaped cord. The V-shape leaves very little room to manoeuvre. It sometimes gets tangled up and feels uncomfortable around the neck. Perhaps this is just me.

These cans are grossly overpriced in the USA. I bought these for $194 + shipping from http://www.musicians-gear.com/
These cans can now be found for as low as $225 in London! Seen it at Ask Electronics on Tottenham Court Road. Hope this helps someone find a true bargain.

SHAME ON YOU SENNHEISER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though this product sounds fantastic,Sennheiser gets 1 star because after problems with the cable on the 540's,560's and 580's,Sennheiser told me the HD 600 cable is fixed. After 9 months,it failed on both channels!!!!!!!

Comfort and dynamic range.

Weakness:

none

When I listened to these cans through a live microphone feed and they sounded better than live!! Seriously, they are pretty good. I listen to electrostatic speakers with seperate bass drivers(bi-amped with active crossover at 120hz) at home and these headphones capture a similar air and transperancy.

Strength:

smooth, laid back

Weakness:

not dynamic, too slow

It's good, not great but good. If you're looking for a relaxing headphone and not something that you would want to do critical listening with, this is it. If you prefer an all around headphone, this might be too slow for fast music. There is something unusual about the sound. Perhaps a bit too full? For the price ($350 Audio Advisor) it's not bad. It is also very comfortable. Recommended.

Their fairness to represent all aspect of audio.
Ability to replace components.

Going from a peasent to a King is the only way to describe my investment in these headphones. I had earbud-phones prior to these :).

During my month long search for headphones, I increased my tastes from the HD580's to HD590's/HD600's. Unsure whether the HD600's could be justified, I eventually jumped into my buyers shoes and did some serious reading on audioreview.com with the HD600's. The writers above me had definitely convinced me that these were the go.

I then went shopping. I found a saleperson who had a pair himself and did not pressure me, as he new too well if I was serious, the Sennheiser brand would sell itself.

It is hard to explain these headphones. They do not emphasise and aspect of sound, they more-so exact it. Their sound is true to production. The way the Sennheiser HD600's produce all aspects of music is TRUE.

With this exactness of production, you tend to rejuvenate your music collection. You DISCOVER. You start to hear choirs breathing before each verse. You discover official studio productions with mistakes in guitaring etc.

These discoveries do not hinder your listening. They create a definite uniqueness. You then relate to each piece of music, as you know something different about it.

Anyone following their passion in my to new heights, INVEST in a set of 270 gram HD600's and you will no reason to regret. As petty as your sound system may be at this moment, these headphones will be your reference.

Strength:

Comfort, build quality, articulate airy sound.

Weakness:

Not as revealing as others.

These are mighty fine headphones, no doubt about it, but definitely not as neutral or detailed as other high end 'phones. Their presentation is laidback, spacious, and sweet. If you just want to kick back to mellow unfatiguing music these are the ones. These smooth over all the harshness in poor associated equipment. Look at all the people using these things on $50 soundcards with good results. I'd like to see them try that with Grado's or Stax's. They'd get an earfull (of trash). These aren't the be all end all reference cans they're made out to be.

Strength:

Excellent, smooth frequency response. Deep but not pumped up bass. Uncolored, natural sound.

Weakness:

Cable to earpiece connection is weak!

I really can't enough about the sound of these 'phones. The frequency response is very smooth, the bass extension is very deep, but there does not seem to be any hump or exaggeration in the bass. The mids and highs are smooth and accurate. The highs are quite extended, but again not hissy or exaggerated. These are just very highly accurate 'phones. A possible downside to that is you will hear what's on the recording, and some of your favorite music might not be recorded well. You might have gotten used to the sound with more colored transducers. The upside is you can now appreciate truly well-recorded music. These are far more accurate cans than the Grado RS-1. I can see how someone might like that sound, but I don't. It's colored. To you the RS-1 might sound lush, warm, and liquid. To me it sounds tubby, fat, and slow. The frequency response and bass and treble extension are just more accurate on the 600s. The SR60s were not the value I read they were. From the SR80 on up, things improved. But they could not compete with the 600s. I believe the Sennheiser 580 might be a better *value* than the 600, but I have not heard them. The cable connection on my 600s is a real problem spot, and quite frustrating. The sound keeps cutting out. They really goofed on this design. I've read quite a few others have the same problem. It's just inexcusable in a product of this price. Therefore I'm giving them 4 stars in both categories. They are definitely 5 star sound quality speakers. In terms of value, I think they are also 5, but that doesn't leave room for the 580 which might be an even better value. I listened to these with X-CANS tube amp and HeadRoom Little amp.
