Strength:

Everything-Very comfortable, high quality etc etc..

Weakness:

None---Some people question the integrity of the cables, but i have never had any problem with these, or the HD580''''s..

The bottom line is as follows: If anyone is in the market for a pair of Full-Size Headphones, buy the Senn HD600 on ebay.. There are 2 main vendors selling it new for about $215 brand new--It is basically a great price for these cans. I wanted to wait a month before writing a review on this item so I can let the headphones break in and I have a good idea of how they compare to my Sony MDR-V6 and my Sennheiser HD580. The Sony MDR-V6 of course is in a different class so there is really no comparison. The HD600 hands down is superior...Not to say MDR-V6 is a bad headphone--quite the opposite, I think for the price i don''''t there is any others that could compare as far as quality of sound or build...anyway this review is not about the sony...so i will provide a comparison between the HD600 and HD580 One thing, is that I do not use a headphone amp like many of the people here. I do however have a high quality pre-amp with a good headphone out (Sony TA-E9000ES). I personally don''''t understand why anyone would want to raise the volume that high on headphones anyway, as it is damaging to the ears. Since I bought them, I have mostly been using them on my computer though..connected to the headphone out on my sony m81 monitor, and surprisingly they saw absolutely awesome even on the computer..I don''''t know why -- it just does. I thought that I would only be able to get good sound off my TA-E9000ES or i would have to get an amp..but it was a really welcome surprise that is sounds great connected to the computer monitor! I have listened to many many headphones in the past and I wasnt really expecting a miraculous sound difference...but the sound out of these is really awesome dont know how to describe it. The sound is very well defined. The Sennheiser HD580''''s have a warmer sound to them, the HD600''''s have cleaner bass, mid and highs...I wasnt expecting to notice any difference since the specs are EXACTLY the same between the two, so i was quite happy... The build quality of these headphones seems very good, and better than the HD580--A nice box is included in the package.... Comfort---The first week the headphones were a bit tight around the head but after that they became very comfortable.. HD580 versus HD600 ---> The HD600 have very noticeably cleaner sound, which was surprising.

Weakness:

cheap cable ???

There''s are term in computer programming called GIGO.This term totally refers to these headphones. It sounds like heaven with pricey equipment. On my minidisc player, on my portable CD player, on my pc sound card it sounds awfull. On my pricey equipment it shines, plenty of bass(if its on there on your source equipment), pure midrange and sweet treble. If you have cheap equipment then forget these phones. Garbage in, garbage out.

Strength:

they feel divine to wear. You forget they are on, but most importantly is their ability. The bass from these cans simply cannot be described, and they go loud if needed, but can also be more subtle than you would think possible.

Weakness:

none. Speakers of the world, be very affraid!

Ok, im a student. I do music as a hobby, both listening and recording. Over the course of around 5 years I haved gone through more than 6 or 7 pairs of enclosed cans. The sound always lacked something that a good set of speakers could only manage. I discovered these at a clearance of 99 pounds down from 250. I scraped, and bought, and have hardly used my speakers since. And why have I given these cans 5 stars for value at such a price? Because I will never part with them, and I can no longer use anything else. They are worth every student penny of mine.

Strength:

Incredible "electrostatic like" sound

Weakness:

NONE!

Coupled these with the Musical Fidelity "X-Cans", and you're in for rare sonic treat.

These have 98% of the clear "you are there" clarity of fine electrostatics, with the punch of dynamic phones.

Bass is deep, clean, and powerful, mids and highs are exemplary.

My only qualm is possible lack of quality control? My original pair was defecive, new, out-of-the-box (blown driver). The replacement set seems to have a slight mis-match of drivers (maybe it's my ears?)

Overall, unless you're willing to spend over $1k for a set of Stax--this is definately the way to go in headphone-dom.

MUST use a headphone amp,Cheesy cables

I am an avid headphone listener and own lots of headphones and headphone amps. These phones are the best for at home use. They simply have the best sound of any conventional(non electrostatic)headphone I have ever head. The only real problem I see with these phones is the absolute need to use a GOOD headphone amp.If you are not using a headphone amp you are not getting the best sound from these headphones.I have found that they sound best when used with the MG head or the Xcans, both tube amps. They sound pretty good with the Creek as well but the Grado has to turned up to nearly max volume to extract decent sound quality. Why the cheap cable on a $450.00(retail)set of headphones? That is ridiculous. That cable is guaranteed to fail at some point which is a real shame.I have found these headphones to sound best listening to jazz and vocal recordings. There is intimate detail in every recording that was previously unrevealed. It brings this detail out without revealing the weakness of the recording, which is the problem with the Grados. Is there such a thing as being too revealing? In the case of the Grados I think so.Buy these Phones ,use with a good headphone amp and enjoy your whole music collection all over again.

Strength:

Natural, detailed

Weakness:

Like the previous reviewer, I too was not impressed with these cans initially. In fact, I kept my shipping material handy so I could return them during my first 3 weeks of listening.

My initial impressions were:

1. They felt like vise on my head. After using the 465s which are extremely comfortable, i couldn't stand to listen to the 600s for more than 1 hour at a time.

2. The sound had a metallic quality to it, though very detailed.

Both conditions have improved markedly over the weeks. The metal headband has relaxed somewhat and I can now listen for several hours at a time without discomfort. The metallic quality has completely disappeared giving these cans the most natural sound I have ever heard.

Flamenco guitarists Lara and Reyes play rapid-fire riffs that the HD-600s render flawlessly. Every other speaker or headphone I've heard muddies the notes somewhat. Natalie Cole sounds like she's standing in front of me. It's so realistic it's scary.

By the way, I don't understand why everybody says you need a headphone amp with these cans. I'm driving them with the headphone output of an old Denon CD player (DCD1500-II) and I always keep the volume in the lower quarter of the scale. Anything higher is uncomfortably loud.

I use my speakers less and less. The HD-600s are so much more musical I feel like I'm missing something if I don't listen with them. Highly recommended.

I purchased these headphones after reading the outstanding review in Stereophile, which rates them as a Class A component. I did not audition the HD600 headphones prior to purchasing them because I have used Sennheiser HD580 headphones at the Yale Music Library fed directly into a Marantz CD-67 SE CD player, which I found to be an excellent sounding combination. I believed the HD600s would probably sound slightly better than the HD580, but certainly not worse.

In any event, the above is not the point of this review, but to state that these headphones work well with a Sony Discman Groove D-181 !! Of course, your next question is why I attached high quality headphones to a low end CD player, such as a Discman? The answer is because I felt like experimenting, but didn't actually think this combination would be tolerable to listen to. Well, guess what, I was wrong? I was totally amazed that my Sony Discman drove the HD600s to a decent volume level without distortion. Obviously, the Discman didn't sound as rich or full bodied driving the HD600s as the Marantz CD-67 SE did driving the HD580s, but it was certainly tolerable to listen to. By the way, I did all my auditioning with Jazz CDs: Diana Krall, Holly Cole and Patricia Barber.

In addition to my Discman, I own a Rega Planet CD Player, an Onkyo 989 Receiver and B&W Matrix 805 loudspeakers; as such, I also plugged the HD600s into my Onkyo's headphone jack and listened to a CD played on the Rega. As you might expect, this combination totally blew away the Sony Discman in all respects - volume level, dynamics and any other audiophile jargon you can recall. My wife summed it up like this, "your audio system makes the CDs sound a lot more full bodied, but the Discman is still acceptable to listen to." I agree with my wife 100%. By the way, in constrast to some people, I would not state that the HD600s have more resolution than my loudspeakers. In fact, I found the sound of my B&W 805s very similar to that of the HD600s. When I first heard the HD600s plugged into my home audio system I sorta felt like I had my Matrix 805s were attached to each sides of my head, expect that I was missing the soundstage.

In sum, the HD600s can be driven by a Sony Discman and sound pretty damn good; as such, if you can't always use your home audio system to drive your HD600s, a Discman is a tolerable comprimise. Some of you may find this shocking, but it is true.

Love these things. was very pleased wtih the 565's. I didn't think I would hear a difference between these two headphones, but wow. I listen to mostly electronica and some vocal, these are incredible. I'm using a headroom home amp.

Getting ready to upgrade to Clau Cable 212 Jaspis Red cables i'll write another review then.

I can't add any more to what has been said except to say that with these headphones, I think I have now become an "audiophile". I have been listening to a pair of Sennheiser HD 540 reference II headphones through a Headroom Supreme amp for about 4 years or so, and thought they sounded pretty sweet. The HD 600s immediately improved upon this (without break-in), and after two weeks of listening to them, I went back to the HD 540s and OUCH! They sounded awful!

These things are beautiful and I finally feel like I have a reference system now. I have been using the sound I hear through my 'phones system to tune my system. The best thing is the bass I hear through these phones: it has justified the "extra" volume I always like to add on my subwoofer. I don't know, something about room dynamics I guess, but a supposedly "flat" setting on my subwoofer level(using a sound meter) does not give as much bass as these headphones have.

I got a fantastic price by calling Headroom direct, by the way - much less than the web site. The 600s are used with:

Headroom Supreme amplifier
DiMarzio interconnects (also bought from Headroom)
Sony something-X500 single CD player
Cambridge Audio DACMagic 2
