Weakness:

Chokes on a lot of DVDs

This is my first DVD player and I relied on the folks at Tweeter Etc. to suggest a suitable match for my entry-level Elite receiver. According to the sales guy, this is the DVD that all the associates in the store own if their not willing to plunk down $800 for the next step up.

I returned my first unit the day after I set it up. It started skipping an hour and a half into the Special Edition T-2 disk, and froze entirely after 2 hours.

The sales guy said that it's a problem that ALL players have -- that there will always be a perceptible pause when the laser jumps between layers. He wasn't sure about the freezing though, so I exchanged the unit for another one.

Well, the problems are showing up on other disks. This evening, Fight Club got mangled starting at about track 16. I originally thought that this was due to the unit heating up, but when I went back to early chapters, everything worked swell.

I'm taking this thing back.

Weakness:

Lip Sync problems

I had a look at this DVD player at my favourite HI FI retailer and yes there is definate lip sync problems. There was definately a very bad time delay between picture and sound. These problems disappeared when the same scene was played through a cheaper Pioneer DVD (who picture quality was just as good BTW. I have forgotten the DVD title (sorry)
The salesperson told me that the Denon 1000 was made by Panasonic for Denon.
Dont be fooled by labels. This is not up to Denons standard and is disappointing to a Denon fan like myself.
If Denon cannot make a DVD at this price point then dont bother cause the opposition do and do it quite well.

Strength:

Build quality, audio and video reproduction, ease of use,
value for the money

Weakness:

No auto detection for DTS audio track but few units in this price range have this feature.

Excellent DVD player with absolutely no LIP SYNC problems at
all. Tracking is superb and the same can be said for the picture quality. Remote is small but easily used. Buttons could be a bit larger but I'm a woman and not a control freak that has to keep playing with the buttons ( this comment I make to my husband!). An excellent all round player, unfortunatly not capable of DVD audio but time will tell if DVD audio will be a concern or a regret. Of all the units that my husband and I evaluated, this was our first choice on quality and value but the Rotel unit we were able to demo was just as good with a higher price tag. No problems playing any of the more difficult DVD's that neither Sony unit was able to play properly and certainly none of the lip synch problems some of the other reviewers from this site have indicated. Seeing is beleiving and you are best advised to give this unit a critical evaluation as we were able to do for 30 days. Thanks to the patience of the fine staff at Audio Ark and the fine product crafted by
Denon and Panasonic. Low end price tag but a high end performer.

Strength:

Awesome Picture & Sound. Great build quality. No lip sync problems.

Weakness:

None Yet

I recently bought this player about 2 weeks ago and i have been watching DVD's every spare moment I have. I am yet to run in to any problems at all. I read all the reviews for the players listed above at this site b4 making my descion. I choose the Denon despite the fact that many ppl have reported the lip sync problem. I audition all 4 players and i liked the Denon the best.

The picture quality is very good, i am yet to see any faults. (I am only using the composite connection though, as my TV brand new sony 21 inch does not have S-VHS or Component Connection (it is impossible to find a good TV around 21 inchs with S-VHS or better in Australia)).

With regards to the lip sync. I have only noticed it once and i am pretty sure it was the Disc's fault. In "Gone in 60 seconds" the scene where Nick Cage is negioting with the English guy about the deal, the English guys voice is about a second out, but it doesn't happen to any of the other actors in that scene. And it was the only time anything like that has ever happened. When watching it again the same thing happened.
Anyone else notice this????

The sound is very good, especially with Music DVD's. Metallica's Cunning Stunts is breath-taking. And S&M just wipes you off your feet.

I have watched about 20 DVD's including "The Matrix", "Pulp Fiction", "Seven", "Cunning Stunts", "S&M" etc. And i haven't had any problems at all.

The remote isn't as bad as everyone says. The only change i would make is to make the Play & Stop buttons bigger and more centrilized. But other than that, you get used to it pretty quickly.

I paid $749.00 AUD for it, about $150 more than the other 3 players i was considering. It may be Denon's entry level player but it is much more than an entry level player.
I highly recommend this DVD player.

Strength:

picture and sound ok

Weakness:

picture and sound out of sync, remote buttons too small.

I noticed the lip-sync problem right away. After renting 5 or 6 movies, I realized that I had a big problem. The sound was delayed about 1/4 second from the picture. I returned the DVD player but the salesman didn't believe that there was a problem, even when I showed him. He said that the sound being off was a deliberate effect in the movie. He also said the sound could be delayed if my audio cables were plugged in backwards! A few weeks later I found this AudioREVIEW website, with over a dozen reviews of this unacceptable Denon product, most mentioning a lip sync problem. Armed with a printout I demanded to see the manager, who promptly and politely offered to exchange it for any other player. I got the Sony DVP S570D which works perfectly.

Weakness:

lip sync

First, an encouraging note reference the lip sync that many, including me, have experienced. I have word today, from Denon Canada, that a new chip set has been built that will correct this problem. They are shipping the chip to a Denon dealer in Burnaby, BC and I should have mine fixed in the next couple of weeks.

This player, together with the Denon 1601 is a formidable presenter of DVD audio and video. CDs such as Enya are almost overwhelming in 5ch stereo on my Paradigm CC360, ADP 170s, Mini-Monitors and PS1200. The video is stunning on my 36" Wega KV36FV26 and the auto-anamorphic mode often makes it impossible for me to see any scan lines from only 8 feet away.

The only irritant I have found is that 'display' does not show the play time remaining for the DVD currently showing. The lip sync will shortly be remedied, making this player the best value for the dollar.

Awesome picture and sound;great lookin' unit with a nifty little remote control. Has a well built drive system that may be a bit slow on loading (2 seconds) but plays very well with a well synchonized audio/video circuit. Can't detect any delay with this Denon player. Wish thay made it in a silver chassis to match my Sony Tv but the Sony which did look great didn't play worth a darn with a full 1/2 second lip sync prob.

great all arond value, picture connectivity, snap to use,

Weakness:

a bit brite on CD's but a great DVD video player

Thought I would use this one for audio and video but as great as it is for DVD I found the high frequencies a bit brite for my liking on CD's. That being said I was pleased with the PCM audio from Springsteens new video DVD which was awesome. May have been other factors involved.
Will keep my old Denon for the CD's for now.
As to the readers experiencing lip sync with the occasional DVD-1000 this player exhibits none but I found it quite common with ono the Sony I demoed, the DVP-S570D. I thought the Sony had a few better features with a bit better remote but the lip sync really was difficult to put up with. Once you know what to look for, it sure becomes obvious.

I've been looking for a while at DVD players to add to my home theater room. Mainly waiting for the best value and no needing one with a decoder chip built in. This unit looked like a hit and miss opportunity by some of the reviews but the review by the HT installer caught my attention so I bought one last weekend from Sonic Interiors. Used a set of Monster Cable coaxial audio and component video to test it
and armed myself with some DVD's which they loaned me for the weekend. I was blown away by how good this unit was and have found no problems with any of it's capabilities.
