Strength:

Very quiet laser, excellent picture quality, super sound

Weakness:

remote

Always wanting Denon components, I finally purchased a DVD-1000 after a very lengthy period of shopping and comparing. I have to say my introduction was not very positive as the brand new unit straight out of the box suffered from a terrible digitizing problem. (The video was garbled on the screen). I was fortunate to be able to exchange it for a new unit. With my guard up I am extremely pleased with the performance of the new one. All the reasons I bought this player for I am happy with. It plays all my burned cd's. Produces unbeleivable video on my Sony XBR400, (check out Superspeedway!). My greatest enjoyment is the silence of the laser pick up. (Walk into a Sony store and you'll know what I am talking about, all you can hear is the high pitched squelch coming from the player's). A feature that is often overlooked. I have suffered no problems with lip synch with this unit, not even the first unit that was returned, that was for video only. My only complaint with this player is the remote, in particular the size of the buttons and the lengthy delay after pressing the desired function. This is easily overlooked however.

The Company that sells it and the Denon Dealers

I would never even consider buying a Cheap DVD player but my brother and I saw this at SEARS for $189.99!!!! and I knew it sold for about $350 usually. There is a reason this company sells products to Sears and the Denon dealers are being very dishonest about the way they are handling the complaints about this piece of crap product. The lip synch was so bad we could not watch it more than the first two movies. It is gaining attention around the country for the unbelievable bad audio and I have called three different Denon dealers in two states asking about the famous chip upgrade that the Denon lovers write about on this site and all three Denon dealers pretended they had not heard any lip synch complaints and knew of no chip upgrade. The audio/video market does not need such an over hyped shameless company like Denon and their dishonest dealers that have to be embarressed by the bad quality of Denon gear along with the company's decision to sell their products in department stores!! If this unit were a piece of medical or aviation equipment, Denon would be sued for making it and the dealers would be sued for selling it. Remember all of the dual page adds we saw from Pioneer in the seventies promoting their receivers with their phony power ratings, Denon is the Pioneer of the present when it comes to hype!!! If anybody wants the names of the Denon dealers who pretend not to know about the problems and claim not to know of the chip upgrade, E mail me and I will provide more info. I am waiting to hear from someone who has had the wonder chip installed by Denon and would love to hear about the results. My brother bought a Sony 400 and even though it is built cheap too, and we don't expect too much long term reliability, it works so far

Strength:

Easy to set up. Sounded and looked great but . . . .

Weakness:

lip synch

I took a chance in reading all the reviews on the DVD player and decided to buy it anyway and was dissappointed. I cannot believe Denon would put out a piece of equipment with a very noticable flaw in it. Do not buy this piece of equipment. I bought the unit at an Audio King and the sales people didn't even know about this problem until I brought a disc in and showed them. So much for knowing what you are selling. I traded the unit for a Yamaha which was $75 dollars cheaper and do not have a problem and will not be buying any Denon products in the future.

Further to my review immediately below.

The chip was replaced without cost to myself by IT Electronics in Burnaby. This unit now works flawlessly! Denon was good to deal with as well.

Strength:

Black and beautiful. Great picture and sound. Cute looking remote.

Weakness:

A bit pricey.

Was great at first but compared to other units I have seen and tried this one is fantastic after having it for a full year now. No lip sync problems like some of you think you have seen. My hook up is with component output and coaxial audio. Have no problems and recommend this connection to any one using this incredible player.

Strength:

Simplicity of design, video performance and the ability to play CD-R’s that I burn.

Weakness:

Mechanical / transport noise heard during very quiet passages.

Overall I’m very pleased with this Denon unit. I purchased this along with the Denon AVR2801 Receiver. I have not experienced any lip sync problems previously mentioned by other reviewers. I would say in the two months of ownership, I have played 25-30 DVD’s, including T-2 and Matrix, with no problems (have the DVD-1000 mated to my AVR2801 via S-video and TOSlink optical links, then into a Mitsu 35 inch 4:3 TV). I’m also pleased with the CD (sonic) performance and especially pleased that this unit can play CD-R’s, as I usually re-mix CD’s with tracks to my liking.

My only complaint (and that might be too strong of an noun) is you can occasionally hear the drive motor during very quiet passages. I would say this would not be audible if one was more than 6 feet from the unit, during playback. Also, there are times when one selects either “Title” or “Menu” during DVD playback and it may take a few seconds for that function to take effect (this may be related to the individual DVD, however and I would not consider this to be a serious performance problem).

I’m waiting for the Denon DVD-2800 to be released (with DVDO’s line doubler), as my Denon dealer will allow me to “trade up” to this unit, when available. I will be upgrading my TV to a RPTV unit which will accept 480p native mode signals, hence the interest in a progressive scan model. I did read some articles that argued some RPTV’s with great intrinsic line doublers, like Pioneer’s Elite Pro line (using “PureCinema” technology), might make going to a progressive scan DVD model somewhat moot. Since I will be purchasing the Pioneer Pro-510HD, I would be very interested in hearing other opinions on this topic.

Again, I’m very pleased with my Denon equipment.

Really good sound, and OK picture

Weakness:

Lip Sync :-( :-(

Hmmm, damn !!

This is really a nice player, too bad it has the lip sync problem. It really deliveres kickass sound, it sounds very very well. If the player wouldn't have problem with lip sync, I would give it 5/5 stars. I think its the system with 4mb buffer, that is not to well made, and then the sync problem apears. Picture is good enough for me :-)
Maybe i'll buy the cheaper Pioeneer DV-535, but I'm not sure If I'll do it, hmm.... Time will tell !!!

Strength:

Price, good overall performance, reliable so far

Weakness:

Slow on start-up, remote control functions seem haphazardly placed

I've read the other reviews posted on this site about the DVD-l000, but, so far, I have experienced none of the problems described. My player has been reliable and has provided good overall performance on both DVDs and CDs. I'm not sure the actual price I paid for the DVD-l000 as it was part of a package consisting of a Rotel sound processor (RSP-976) and Rotel power amplifier(RB985THX MkII) and NHT speakers(VT2.4s, ACl, and 6.3 in-ceiling surrounds).

Strength:

Audio quality

Weakness:

Video Playback, some minor lip sync problems

In comparison to my PS2, the video looks terrible. There are horizontal lines and artifacts in solid colored areas. I don't see these on my PS2 at all. Also lip sync issues with a few disks, the worst was Road Trip, with the audio trailing the video by about 5 frames. The audio quality is very good, but doesn't make up for the poor video performance. Maybe I have a bad machine...

Strength:

great sound, solid construction and appearance, cd-r

Weakness:

lip synch

I wanted a step up from standard entry level players and
went with the Denon 1000. The first unit had an annoying, intermittent vibration. I also noticed lip synch problems
with a few discs. Returned it for another. No vibration but
still noticed the lip synch problems. In my experience, the
lip synch was relatively small, you might never notice it, but continued to bother me.

I finally returned the Denon 1000 for a Sony 360D player
that was cheaper but not really what I wanted. If I could have found an ONKYO - 535 player locally I probably would
have gone that route. The DENON 1000 could be a great unit
but until the lip synch problem is addressed its hard to
justify the price of this unit.

BTW, I have an older stereo setup and TV so I can't address
many of the player's features.
