Strength:

Good Picture, Many nice options for price

Weakness:

Synchronization problems, wouldn't play certain DVD's

I have had my DVD-1500 for over a year now and had not checked the reviews on this porductt for a while. It seems that I am not alone. I also have had the same problems that everybody else is having. I did get the problem of not playing certain DVD's fixed by having a chip replaced but am still having big time synch problems. This is most noticeable on the Toy Story 2 DVD right from the start (especially in the scene where the pig and Buzz end playing the video game and Woody appears on the scene). There is nowhere to be found for information if this is fixed, which is almost as annoying as the problem itself. Does anybody know if there is two replacement chips? I am happy with the player, since this problem only happens occasionally but I do expect better. I am now looking into either getting this problem corrected or turning to an alternative player.

Strength:

Great picture when working.

Weakness:

Hardly ever works

It seems unrealistic to say I have used this unit for 10 months, since I have only seen it for approximately 4. The rest of the time it has been in the hands of Denon, who
after the first return could not fix it, and after the second refuse to, unless I pay for it. At first the unit performed quite well, but soon images would freeze up, then
jump forward. There were also problems with the audio/video
sync in DTS mode. The unit was returned to Denon, who took their time, but replaced a chip inside. Confident that the
problem was resolved, I found the unit performed even worse.
This time around, DVDs would not even load, these certain
discs that performed fine before. The unit was a total mess
and unplayable. Back to Denon in June, and I have not seen it since. Denon has just informed me they would be happy to repair the unit for $160.00. Twice burned is enough for
me, thank you. Quite remarkable for a company that sells
'reference standard' products. I have heard that Denon's other products work just fine, but take a long hard look before you purchase a product from a company that will not
back up its own warranty. As many others have said, back to my old Toshiba, and a hearty GOODBYE to Denon and its worthless product. Thank You

Strength:

great sound, solid construction

Weakness:

Noisy transport, lip sync problems bad!!!, sometimes skips around on discs, very very loud

STAY AWAY!!!! This player is a lemon period!!!. The only thing it is good for is using as a single cd player, excellent audio section. The picture is dark, it sometimes skipped chapters, lip syncing was a nightmare!!!! very apparent on Gone in Sixty Seconds. Went to Torrance and recieved the e-prom upgrade, yes the lip syncing was virtualy cleared up, but it still would have problems tracking chapters. After the second time taking it to the Denon office in Torrance CA, they just went ahead and gave me a brand new dvd 1000. Same wonderful sound, improved picture and yes the dialogue seems to match the mouths of the actors. The 1000 is a very good player but STEER CLEAR OF THE 1500!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S OVERALL RATING WILL BE 2 STARS INSTEAD OF ONE ONLY BECAUSE IT REALLY DOES HAVE A SUPERB AUDIO SECTION

Addendum to earlier review

Took the DVD player in for the second time to correct the synch problem. I convinced the dealer that this was a common problem and when they finally called their Denon rep, the rep admits that this is a known issue. Took 4 days to get the palyer back but the problem is not corrected. I will now take the player back and demand that it is fixed correctly or replace with another model/brand.

Strength:

I feel the dvd player works good and hey its denon.

Weakness:

2 problems in one year

I read reviews and found that I also have audio sync problems. As far as the DVD player not playying certain movies I had that problem with the patriot BUT since I purchased the Service Plan they replaced a part in it and now it works. I had a problem with the loading mechanism again sent it to service and again it was fixed. The way I look at it is bring on the problems because after 3 times it get replaced and i want to upgrade to the 2800. Too bad I dont work at GG anymore, No more discounts.Over all I'm happy with the product it works great.

Strength:

The Denon DVD-1500 is just fine for playing CD's. I have no real complaints about the sound quality.

Weakness:

From the minute I bought this thing, I've been wrestling with DVD audio synch problems. It's gotten to the point that I won't buy a new DVD release until I've had an opportunity to rent it and try it out in advance. I'd estimate I have audio synch problems with 40% of the DVD's I've ever tried to play. The skip function is also incredibly slow, and it takes about 35 seconds for a new disc to load up before you can hit the play button. This is the single worst piece of electronic equipment I've ever purchased.

Don't buy the Denon DVD-1500!!

Strength:

Great design, Gold finish, Sound quality, Plays CD-R.

Weakness:

Remote, Lip-sync, Unbelievable noise from the CD drive, Picture quality does not justify the price.

I bought this player from Hifi-klubben in Oslo and had no major problems with it at first. Then they came one after one. The speech on my movies came long after the picture had been shown. Then I played some of my favorite CD's on it. This caused the player to sound like a car who starts with a cold diesel engine. Unbelievable. I took the player down to the store and said I wasn't interested in keeping it. I also tried the same CD's who created the noise on similar 1500 models in the store, with the same problem. Luckily I was welcome to choose another DVD player. I'm still waiting for it though. Seems like Hifi-klubben has some problems in getting my ordered Marantz DV7010. Though I would rather wait 2 months on a new player than to keep the Denon DVD-1500. Shame on you Denon. It's really sad that Denon has made this bad player. I own the Denon AVR-2800 which I really think kicks ass! :)

Summary: Don't buy this one. But don't

Weakness:

Synch Problems, can't even read 2nd layers of discs

This thing is awful. At first it looks great. Then the soundtrack problems started. Then I couldn't even watch past the 1st hour of ANY movie, it would freeze up or skip like nuts. I sent it for service, got it back, and it still doesn't work right. Now I'm trying to contact Denon and I can't even get through. Don't buy this thing.

All, This unit has been discontinued. I have been told that was primarily due to the audio/video sync issues.

Strength:

Built Quality, Looks, Denon reputation and prestige

Weakness:

Price

I bought this Player despite some of the bad reviews on here. This player is replacing my Sony with lip sync problems. I am trusting the Denon name on this one. So, far, I've noticed that it's better quality construction than the Sony. The Picture is very good, if not as warm as the Sony. (just watched The Sound of Music on it, and the scenery looks awsome). So far I am more than satisfied with the DVD 1500.
