remember you can only buy this used now,for a song may I add.$62 on ebay !
I am able to get around to the layers on sacd and dvd-audio without a video monitor.Cd play back is somewhere between good to above average.I bought to hear not to watch so no comment on video. It's not dethroned the old adcom 600 or the up sampling musical fidelity, but the rest of your system better be very good or you'll think you have arrived.

Strength:

Great CD sound

Weakness:

It is NOT a DVD player as it must be.. Sorry ((

Rather good for CDs. Does NOT really read SACDs Reads only 50% of DVDs If it's warmed up after watching one DVD you have to wait for an hour or two for the device to cool down to watch the next film Does not read DVD-R/DVD+R First I adored it for great sound, then it became a GREAT disappoitment

Strength:

Looks, multichannel playback, sturdy build quality, video picture

Weakness:

Slow loading, quircky disk scan and que features, 2 channel CD playback, clunky drawer

I have to say that this product was a bit of a disappointment to me. As a long time Denon fan I was immediately attracted to this model hoping it would fill all my audio and video needs for my new media room. After 6 months of use I have to call it a mixed bag. The video reproduction is very good...far exceeding any DVD player I've ever owned. Having said that I've only previously owned a bargain basement Samsung and a middle of the road Hitachi. The DVD-A and SACD sound is excellent. It looks nice and was fairly easy to setup. Now the bad... The CD playback is not what I would expect of the Denon brand. Not very detailed...very bland. Sounds like a Best Buy bargain player. The functions are below par as well. Your inability to cue up tracks prior to play is annoying as is the bizzare scanning behavior on CD's. I've had $50 portables that do a better job of both. It also has a loud and clunky drawer and takes forever the the disks to load up. I've not had any functional problems with the unit so the build quality appears to be fine, but I already find myself in the market for a dedicated CD player to improve on redbook CD playback sound quality and functionality and I'll probably just use this unit as an overpriced DVD player since I don't listen to DVDA and SACD that much anyway.

Weakness:

Build quality - Device failed Slow to change tracks on SACD & DVD-A

I purchased the DVD-2200 based on Denon's reputation of quality. I will say the quality of the audio and video was very good. The build quality is NOT. After a mere 15 months the device has failed. The motor that drives the disks no longer operates. Additionally, Denon only carries a 1 year warranty on their DVD players. Interestingly enough another Home Theater Spot forum has a number of posts where the disks fails to load. While the player was working the video quality was very nice. Audio was fantastic (although the DVD-5900 would be even better). SACD and DVD-A creates a beatiful audio environment. Unless Denon can improve on build quality, I would not recommend this entry-level universal player. Hopefully their higher-tier products last longer. If not, I would look to Marantz or Pioneer Elite. If the player was still operational, I would have rated the player with 5 Stars overall and 4 stars for Value. Its not fair to give it 1 star, since I enjoyed it while it lasted. Alas, now I must purchase another player. I doubt it will be another Denon due to this problem. Maybe I was just unlucky. :-(

Strength:

- Good build quality and best in class video capability. - Excellent SACD and DVD audio capability - Great ergonomics - Good CD quality

Weakness:

- CD playback is good, not outstanding

I've owned this player for over a year and just bought a Denon DVD-2900 on close out today. After comparison to the Denon 2900 and my Sony SCD C555 ES, a Stereophile class A component, here are some comments. The DVD2200 is almost identical to the DVD2900 in all respect except for the build weight. Both player have excellent video, SACD and DVD quality. The Sony has a smoother yet more transparent sound than either of the Denon units but lacks DVD capability. Also the Sony is more refined on CD playback than the Denon units. The Denons are reasonablity good. I did a lot of listening and the Denon 2200 CD playback is slightly more transparent and open than the 2900. The 2900 is slightly darker and slower sounding.

Strength:

Great sound for SACD and DVD-A Crisp, high quality video A great value buy

Weakness:

I hate that there are two separate buttons for power on and off.

All I can say is I have fallen in love with this player. I bought it because I was having difficulty with my Pioneer DV667-A. Or so I thought. Ends up I just was having problems programming my Sony STR DA7ES reciever. But after I got this player hooked up and got to playing with it I was in awe. I'm running it through an Outlaw Audio ICBM1 bass manager. This combination sounds great. I just recently bought a set of Mirage OM9's but of course they should sound good through them. I unhooked my OM9's and hooked my $100 a piece Sony mains and my $500 Cerwin Vega surround system up (i'm running 7.1) and I couldn't believe my ears. This unit had much better highs and didn't sound as muddy as most SACD's and DVD A's ussually do. And the picture is superb. Bright and crips. I am veiwing through a Mitsubishi WS-55511 55" wide screen rear projector. One of the one things that did erk me about this player is there are two separate buttons for power on and off. I have the Sony universal remote. This was an annoying problem but not one that could stop me when I was progamming it. But I would still recommend this player to anyone that asked.

AUdio performance Neat outlook Stable performance

Weakness:

difficult to find with respect to this price

A product which satisfy many ordinary user. I am using a LCD projector with VGA connection, pixel to pixel. The video quality is above standard. But you can get a lot better audio performance with this 2200 C/w others with similar price. It is even better then a $400 cd player. Of course, if you are looking for smoothness, this machie's silicon image won't satisfy you, you should consider DCDi like in Philips.

Strength:

Fast loading and dvd menu responses. Super picture. plays anything.

Weakness:

Bland intructions should be written by an enthusiast with tips and recommendations. lack of idiot proofing...lol Cheap plastic tray and mechanism. Analog rca outputs spaced to close together for high end cables. Most of all the average CD sound quality.

Overall a great dvd player. Picture is great. Fast loading and dvd menu response is a lot faster than my previous player. Although the fwd/rwd scanning is not fluid at all. Just different speeds of still shots. All my other players scan forward at x1 smoothly and cost less than $125. I have 5 dvd players in my home and have used many others so I can speak from experience. I was pretty upset when I found out I needed $150. worth of cables to truly test SACD. Sony can bite me for making this format analog only. No matter how much I spend on cables the optical digital input sounds crisper. At first I ran through the setup not thinking and calibrated the speaker size and distances on the Denon then it of course doubles up through my Marantz sr-6200 and made me want to take an axe to it. The instructions were not very clear to note turning off the filter if you use an external processor. I finally found the the little sentence mentioning this in the instructions. How about BOLD print in the beginning of the setup instructions Denon. Unless you plan to hook this player directly up to a seperate 5.1 amp I find the processing options pointless. 90% of the people out there are already going to have a preamp/processor. The menus are awkwardly designed and I wish it had a "bypass all" button. Finally I set all the speakers distances to zero and turned off the large/small speaker filter and now was ready for some listening. I tried a Boston SACD to test how this supposedly wonderful this format is. I noticed a little more detail but a lack of bass. A conventional cd played through the dig input sounded better to me. One issue has been that I do not have a sub. My mains are huge with 15" woofers and my center has dual 6.5" mids. So the bass has been sufficient until now. I have been saving for an SVS20-39 pc+ and thanks to this player I stopped listening to music in my living room until I get the sub. When I use the 5.1 direct analog input on my receiver all of the LFE from a SACD is not used so I must use the analog stereo in/out's and play in pro logic II to get any reasonable bass. I replaced an Onkyo dvs-353 that I purchased in 2000 for $189. It was a simple but great player and had one great feature that was the "direct digital path". In other words a raw, clean, and untouched signal out of that player. What I prayed for was better audio playback but this Denon can only equal it. So to verify what many others have said: If you want a great dvd player the 2200 will satisfy in picture quality and compete with much more expensive players but you will need an audiophile class cd player if your ears are golden. I may post another review after the sub gets here.
