Strength:

Just review the list of features! SACD, DVD-Audio, & DVD-Video are all done quite well for the price.

Weakness:

Disappointing CD replay, making an additional ($299-699) CD player a must. Somewhat flimsy build quality, compared e.g. to Denon's DVD-2900. Somewhat noisy and shakey transport makes a set of ($50-60 in my case) cones a must as well.

Not the one-player-does-all (well) giant-killer some might lead you to believe. If you listen to CD's much, and have decent speakers ($200-2000/pair), then you'll need a real CD player (I chose Arcam's CD73T to complete my bedroom system), a more expensive universal player (perhaps a Lexicon, which I realize is several leagues more expensive), or maybe a (costly) mod. And if you care much about build quality, you will already have discounted this player in favor of Denon's better-built DVD-2900 (the player in my main system, now with an expensive mod from Underwood/Parts Connexion) or DVD-5900. However, knowing all of this, I still purchased this player to replace my (even worse) Toshiba SD-4800 DVD player, thus adding SACD & better DVD-Audio/Video playback to my bedroom system, and I do not regret it. On SACD & DVD-Audio, the Denon DVD-2200 sounds indistinguishable from my Arcam CD73T on CD. You might think that disappointing, but then you probably haven't heard the Arcam...

Strength:

-Incredible breathtaking sound for home theater and nice dynamic musical tones for SACD and DVD Audio. -Killer price for the amount of features, quality and performance!!!

Weakness:

The awkward On/Off buttons on the remote is a little complicated but other than that this incredible home theater machine will satisfy even the most serious audiophiler.

Bada Bing Bada Boom!!! This is by far the best DVD player I have ever heard in a while at this price range. This was my first Denon product and I was very impressed by the audio and video qualities that Denon produced in this budgeted entry hifi player. The highs were incredibly breathtaking and lows were revealing and transparent. I've seen Saving Private Ryan DTS at least 5 times and after watching the first 15 mins. for the first time on this incredible machine it was like watching the movie for the first time again, but with more astonishing sounds that I had never heard before in the THEATERS! I didn't get a chance to view it in progressive scan, although I hear that Denon's proprietary PureProgressive Scan technology is one of the best in the industry, even on my interlace Sony 32" TV the video was still life like with more detail and contrast than my previous Toshiba. This was definately a major bargain for all the other components in my system. SACDs and DVD-Audio were sweet, clear and musical. That was one of my main reasons for getting this Universal player, since I sold off my Cambridge Audio CD player and my crappy Toshiba DVD player, for this all in one beautiful hifi unit. Bottom line, I know that I won't have to invest in another player like this one again in a very long time.

Strength:

Audio section on movies was tremendous. The video portion was crisp and clear. I plan to further explore the players setup details to try and improve the picture

Weakness:

The remote is hard to read in the dark, otherwise I have no complaints

I was very impressed with my first DVD test. I played LOTR and found many of there were many sound effects I had not previously recognized. I also noticed the volume was at half compared to what I normally watch movies. The video was very impressive. The older DVD unit I was using was a cheap model due to my Pioneer unit dying in the last few months prior to order the Denon. So far with very little usage, I am pleased beyond my expectations. I have not yet tried an SACD, however I will provide a post once I complete a test. Strength:

Great video and sound; universal player that does everything; features; value

Weakness:

No DVI; no firewire; no digital connection for high resolution audio

I replaced my Toshiba DVD-6200 player with the Denon, and I couldn't be happier with that decision. I wanted to get SACD and DVD-Audio and the Denon does both quite well. I never heard anything so amazing. Both formats completely blow away CD and left me, my wife, all of my friends and family stunned. Even my dogs were mesmerized. For example, listening to ELP's Brain Salad Surgery on DVD-Audio was an assault on the senses in 5.1 24 bit/96 khz sound. My living room came alive with instruments flying around everywhere and bass rumbling the foundations of my home. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is equally impressive, as it sounded like the musicians were right in the room with me. Both DVD-Audio and SACD are excellent formats which reveal little details and subtleties in the music which I had never heard before for all the years I've been familiar with it. Both formats bring incredible instrument and channel separation, transparency, closeness, warmness and detail. Bass management is as good as it gets as well on both high resolution formats. The CD playback on the Denon is also a cut above in quality that what you may be used to. The video quality is also superb, with vividly detailed colors thru its progressive scan output. The Denon produced a very tight picture on my Sony KV-40XBR800. There were no visible flaws. Dolby Digital and DTS playback rocked too with tons of bass. The Denon has plenty of features such as Direct Digital which bypasses all digital and video displays for best possible high resolution audio playback. The on-screen menu is very easy and efficient. In all departments, the Denon was an improvement over the Toshiba, which I rated quite highly. Appearance on the Denon is quite sleek even though it is not built quite like the tank that the Denon DVD-2900 is. However, the cost of the Denon DVD-2200 simply cannot be beat for everything that you get and the performance. Overall, you will not be disappointed with this product. In fact, you will be thrilled.

Strength:

Clear video with excellent resolution and color reproduction. Good controls and audio quality.

Weakness:

Drawer is not very sturdy. Unit vibrates and is noisy with certain disks that my Toshiba 6200 handles without distress. Build quality only average.

Video performance is excellent and audio very good, but transport is noisy and chasis vibrates on some DVDs.

Weakness:

- "Return" Button In Awkward Location - If Turned Off While Tray Is Open, Tray Remains Open - No Resume After Powered Off - SACD Not As Warm Sounding

Well it's about time AudioREVIEW listed the DVD-2200 for review! Now that I've had more time to thoroughly analyze every aspect of this DVD player, I am ready to give my opinions on it: Video Performance: Like Sound and Vision stated, the 2200 has excellent to superb video performance. Progressive scan produces an extremely smooth and clean picture. It's almost like looking through a window...although not quite as lifelike as HD. From all my weeks of video testing, I found the difference between the 2200 and the 2900 to be very minimal, if any at all. For those of you deciding between the two and are under a budget, believe me when I say that both players perform the same in the video category. You'd have to be an obsessive video freak with professional testing devices to even notice any difference. Color accuracy is very precise and the 2200 even adds a little "depth" to the picture..something that I truly praise it for. I know that most people describe this as a 3D-like image, but I hate to term it that way because only HD comes close to a 3D-like image. Audio Performance: While not quite as superb as the 2900 in SACD, the 2200 is excellent in its all-around sound performance. Dolby Digital, DTS, and DVD-A all sound strong and soothing. SACD, while still excellent, is definitely a little less warm compared to the 2900. The player includes channel-delay, channel-level, basic bass management, and even a pure direct mode for the best sonic response when listening to music. The bottom line is this: Consider your other components before you make a final decision on which player best suits you. I personally chose the 2200 over the 2900 because I preferred the picture quality of it over the 2900. My sound system consists of B&W DM602 S3 for fronts, B&W LCR600 S3 as my center, cheap surround speakers, and a Denon AVR-1804 receiver. Under these conditions, I found no advantage in choosing the 2900 because I could hardly tell the difference in sound between the two. Unless your sound system is well over $8,000..you may want to consider the 2200. Considering the price, this DVD player really knocks away the competition. Take my word for it, you WON'T be disappointed!

Amazing Video Quality Sturdy Build Speaker Configuration Options Video Tweaking Options

Weakness:

Cheap looking remote

This dvd player is simply amazing. I went back and forth between this one and the 2900 and I don't regret my decision. I actually bought this product for its video capabilities, the 12bit silicon chip seemed inticing. And boy was I right. This player was an upgrade from the Sony DVP-NS755V which was not a bad player for video but this one kicks its but. Actually after reading many reviews alot people live the video on the 2200 rather than the 2900. The audio capabilities of this machine is almost just as good. The DVD audio sounds great, the SACD sounds good also but not as warm as the 2900. The setup is great, very few dvd players give you this many options for speaker configuration and video tweaking. Denon really knew they were doing with this player. ALthough it's not as big as the 2900 it's no shrimp. If you looking for the bst DVD-Video player under $1000 this is your choice. If sound is your main priority go with the 2900 or the Sony DVP-NS999ES. Not saying the 2200 isn't good for audio it's just not as good as the higher Denon or the Sony. All in all this is a remarkeable piece. If you don't have a high end setup meaning seperate amps and preamps worth atleast $3000 choose the 2200 it's amazing.

Strength:

SACD and DVD-Audio performance DVD-Video progressive scan performance 2 channel bass enhancer very useful Bass management, while pretty basic with a fixed 80Hz crossover, works well and does what it should

Weakness:

Denon just loves small gold print for lettering on the black face plate. Menu system to setup multichannel output for SACD/DVD-A a bit clumsy to work with. The "return" key is your friend.

I purchased this universal player to replace a Toshiba SD-4800, because I wanted to add SACD to my list of options and use the bass management capabilities of the DVD-2200 to improve my experience with DVD-Audio, too. The video performance of the player was a nice step up from the SD-4800. Progressive performance much improved. Detail seems a bit better. Color accuracy also seems a bit better. Audio performance is great. Definitely a step up in DVD-Audio performance. SACD required a fair amount of tweaking to get the bass output to a satisfactory level. Had to set the subwoofer output to +10dB. The 2-channel bass enhancer works great for SACD and CD audio. What really surprised me is how good the CD audio performance was, but given DVD-A is 24 bits and 96/192KHz vs. 16 bits and 44.1 KHz, CD audio should be a walk in the park for this player. While CDs sound very crisp and clean, the imaging is much better than via my previous players digital connection to my receiver. So, now I play CD/SACD/DVD-A all via the 5.1 multi-channel input of my receiver (soon to be pre/pro) and sit back and enjoy the sound. I've been able to compare the CD versions and SACD version of various discs with this player and SACD is definitely an improvement over CD. Much smoother, less edgy and crunchy compared to CD. Of course, DVD-A is just as good as SACD, so I've got the best of both worlds which was the whole point for purchasing the player. For $300 less than the DVD-2900, the DVD-2200 is a great value and a great performer. I rarely rate anything at 5 stars, but this unit earns the rating due to a great price-performance ratio.
