None seen I got this to be able to listen to DVD-A and SACD and it is been a great investment. The build quality is very good, sound quality is excellent, and as far as I can tell, the video is very good. The folks at one store indicated that the video on this was not great and recommended the Integra 8.3; Similar Products Used: Integra 8.3 |

Strength:
Plays anything DVD-RW and +rw support CD replay is quite good Picture quality Build quality price/performance second rca front out (handy so you can connect the 5.1 input as well as cd input and apply different Bass managament policies. If your reveiver supports this)
Weakness:
Switching multi/2channel SACD is slow and can only be done with a button on the front skipping forward/backward during playback is slow (only a few steps, 2x 4x) Loading discs takes ages This is a very nice player. I owned a Rotel rcd-975, that was very hard to beat. Only Rotels 991 player was a better sounding model. So I have had my player for a long time, since Rotel never had any thing better. Now this Denon is almost as good when playing CD's. Soundstage and depth are almost equal. Only the bass is a bit less tight than the Rotel. However CD perfomance is so good, the Denon now replaces my trusted rcd-975. Video performance is excellent. Only a small problem. Mine is codefree, and NTSC discs must be played as NTSC. If you set it to pal it does 50hz pal, and no way to set it to pal60. This means the picture "shakes" a bit. My former Rotel played NTSC discs better. SACD play is excellent, this player can anything you throw at. Tried the Pioneer 757ai but CD replay is worse Tried the Marantz 8400, but this one performs almost the same. But is way more expensive. Strength:
Video audio (Hi Rez audio is outstanding) Weight, this thing is a tank Audio/Video tweaks are plenty and all are useful. Well planned out and executed.
Weakness:
Remote Fast forward scanning Some video jitter on complex scenes. I've had this for almost 4 months, now and I have to say that this tank has met all my expectations. It does have a couple of things that I don't like. Let me get those out of the way: The remote needs to be better. It needs some back lighting to be completely useful in the dark. Once you know where the most used buttons are you'll be ok, but there are times you might want to use a not-so-used button and it is hard to find. The audio fast forward is rather annoying, it isn't smooth. I wish it had a screen saver, there are times when someone else will be playing it (audio) with the tv on (RPTV)while messing around the house and the Denon screen will be on for a long time. I'm afraid the tv will get "burn in". Those are pretty much all my gripes, small compared to what is good with this dvd player. Picture quality is outstanding. It really gives a life-like, 3 dimensional picture. Having two modes for progessive can make a difference on some video material, however there are a couple of times where neither mode can truly take care of the jitter. Usually really dark scenes with faster panning. I think I'm the only one in my house that notices it. A little annoying, but not enough to keep me from appreciating what Denon has done, and better that Sony ES in my opinion. Also, extremely quite picture, very little noise and color and detail are spot on I belive. Audio, even from standard cd's is very dynamic and clear. Sound was really good from the start, and then this past weekend it was almost like a switch was flipped and wow! Audio just began to sparkle. The highs really became open and airy. It really sounds good. Sacd is superb. Warm and "present" is the best way I can describe it. Again, very open and airy. Bass, to me is almost subconscious, not in a bad way. A better way a saying it is that it is not all rumble and not overpowering at all. Very musical. DVD-Audio is excellent also, although I have only one DVD-audio disc. I did borrow 6 discs form my father-in-law so I did get a fairly wide review of different music. I find Sacd is bit more to my liking. DVD-Audio seems a little more "processed" to me. I could be wrong, I guess. I am more used to Sacd as I've had that for a couple of years now and a lot more material. None-the-less, audio is outstanding on all fronts. If you've read this far, thanks for letting me ramble. This is by far one of the best players in this range and even those a bit more expensive. I looked long and hard before getting this thing because I wanted to make sure I picked something that we would have for a while and I wanted to get the best for what I could afford, I beleive Denon has done a whale of a job on this thing and if you're in the market, I think you owe it to yourself to at least take a long look at this beast. Similar Products Used: Sony Sony ES Yamaha Onkyo (just for grins I auditioned the Krell, Denon compared very well, but less costly) It's hard for me to give anything a 5 star rating, most everything has a flaw or two, I would give it a 4.5 if the option was here. |

Versatility. Video and sound quality- especially DVD-Audio.
Weakness:
Remote. Lack of a digital output for DVD-Audio or SACD...for that you need to spring for the DVD 5900 and hope that it is compatible with the upcoming copy protection standards! Purchased this unit to simplify my A/V setup. I replaced a Toshiba SD-9200 and a SONY DVP-S999ES with this unit. It has proven easy to operate. I like the bass management and speaker set up features. .I'm running Magnepan 12s and really benefit from these attributes. While not as useful as the SON Y they are better than nothing (i.e., the Toshiba). Overall I think that the SONY (for SACD) and the Toshiba (for DVD-Audio) do sound somewhat better. Mind you the difference is small. When you consider that the SONY retailed for $200 more and the Toshiba for about a grand more that 'ain't bad. For CD playback they are about equal. The video quality is very, very good. Though not quite as refined as the SONY it is more than adequate for my rear projection TV. And the video is a step up from the Toshiba. The remote is just O.K. The primary keys glow in the dark, the other keys are just plain hard to find. Overall I think that this a very good unit. However, I am seriously considering upgrading the analog section to bring the sound quality closer to the two units it replaced. Two for one, not bad & it isn't even happy hour! A great value!! CHEAP LOOKING POWER BUTTON. IT DOES NOT LOOK UNIFORM WITH THE FRONT PANEL. I BROUGHT ONE BACK AND THIS ONE IS ONLY A LITTLE BETTER. I THINK IT SOUNDS AND LOOKS GREAT. I COULD NOT GET MY SUB WORKING, EVEN THOUGH IT IS HOOKED UP CORRECTLY INTO MY 5800. I DOWNLOADED SET-UP TIPS FROM DENON AND THEY HELPED. SINCE THE 5800 DOES NOT HAVE PRE-OUT LEVEL CONTROLS THEY SAID TO BRING ALL THE SPEAKER CHANNEL LEVELS TO -6 EXCEPT THE SUB ON THE 2900 SET-UP. THE SUB SEAMS TO WORK BETTER KNOW. CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF I AM DOING THIS RIGHT? IS IT WORTH BRINGING THIS BACK FOR THE DVD 5800. Similar Products Used: 5800 DENON RECIEVER SONY DVD KLPPSCH SPEAKERS VELODYNE SUB |

Strength:
Solid build, attractive, and easy to use. Good home cinema reproduction.
Weakness:
CD replay is mediocre. Those looking for good quality stereo sound need to audition carefully. The build quality is very high and inspires confidence. Setup and subsequent use is easy. Picture quality is good, although you should check out other reviews for more authoritative comments since I am not using a very large screen (32" Sony Widescreen TV). Sound quality is impressive for movies, but CD replay falls short of good quality cd only players. I have some discs duplicated in different formats (Norah Jones, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Neil Young) and on comparing the sound across formats I regularly find myself returning to the normal CD - the 'musicality' argument rolled out by fans of vinyl applies. I am new to SACD & DVD Audio, and there is no doubt that these formats do impress, however, if you currently use a CD player which costs the same or more as this DVD player, you may regret replacing it with this, particularly when playing your favourite ordinary CD's. As a supplementary player, you won't go wrong. Similar Products Used: No multi format DVD players. TEAC (DAC + DAT) and Arcam CD players |
