Strength:
Great sound from most every 5" disc except HDCD. Opened my ears up to hi-rez discs and their capabilities. Impressive video. Easy to setup. Great value for my dollar. I am happy I got my money's worth. Totally satisfied!
Weakness:
It ain't cheap for college students like myself. However, it is a worthy investment of my meager wages. I won't bother by listing all of its features as you can find that information for yourself. I will say that this is my third CD/DVD player and it is great. I am impressed by its performance and I am especially happy that I got it for a steal. It is a great audio and video player. It plays my Redbook CDs just as well as my NAD C 541i HDCD/CD player and that is important to me since most of my audio collection are Redbook CDs. I've tried a few DVD-A & SACD titles as well. WOW! So, this is what high resolution sounds like. There is no comparison between CDs and DVD-A/SACD discs. I have to increase my collection of hi-rez discs as soon as possible. Video is quite impressive as well. It is so film-like. I am impressed considering the fact that I hate liberal Hollywood movies. This is a great universal player for under $1k. I highly recommend it to others looking for an almost all in one box solution. Similar Products Used: Pioneer DV-656A, NAD C 541i (though they are not the same) |

does not play lp's or hd-dvd this machine is awesome!! it does everything and does it well, amazing progressive scan picture(not like sony's) ,incredible dvd-audio sound and sacd too, but if you are an audiophile or videophile freak, you should buy a 250.000 equipment and you'll be happy i'd guess....that way you don't need to post any reviews here.this unit is more than good for what it does buy it you won't be disapointed........unless you own george lucas's skywalker ranch... Strength:
Well built,easy set up
Weakness:
Not really a weakness but, needs to break in at least 100hrs. Well if you came here you either own this unit or are thinking about buying it,or you hate Denon and love sony.I have had this unit almost 6 mo.I did not want to be one of THOSE people who jerk it out of a box and hook it up,don't know how to set it up and then say after 1 hr,It don't sound as good as my blah blah. This unit was kinda tight at first but has opened up much more with time, about 150hrs.I am not really a videophile so I can only say on my 65"mits it looks fantastic, almost 3D.The audio side is another story,it has the same sony sacd chip as the 999es,the sacd is very competent,as good as any 1k sacd player and can compete with many more expensive players. The dvd audio side is outstanding and sounds as good as some 5k players I auditioned for fun.If you have not stepped into dvd-a I suggest you try it,if you loved the way lp's sounded back in the day so rich and full, the 2ch will take you back.On the redbook cd side it also performs well, about like a $500 cd player, not like a 5k cd player(what do you expect at under 1k for all you get). All in all this is one of the top multi players at its price, set up is very important, break in too.Its worth a try, everyone has different taste, but at 1k for the build(very well laid out inside)features, sound, ability, it was the best overall of 5 that I tried 1.5k and under. Strength:
Video quality is pretty good.
Weakness:
CD and SACD playback quality are not even close to audophile standards. I bought this unit mainly as our DVD player (it was replacing an aging JVC unit). I also purchased it to listen to my CD's while my Proceed CDP was being repaired. Unfortunately it's CD plaback quality was not up to par. I could not listen to it for more than 15 minutes without having to turn it off. I'm used to my Proceed CDP which to me is natural, very open and images very well. To be fair I borrowed my buddies Sony ES9000 DVD and gave it a side by side comparison. The video quality is close but I think the Sony is slightly better. I'm viewing the image through a brand new XBR 40" Sony real picture tube. As far as CD and SACD the Sony blew by this unit. There was no comparison. In direct mode the Sony sounds terrific and the Dennon sounds like a transistor radio. I was so disappointed with the Dennon that I returned it for a refund and purchased a used ES9000 from EBay. I do my listening through a pair of BAT VK60 mono tube amps and B&W 801 speakers. Similar Products Used: Sony ES9000, Proceed CDP, Mark Levinston 39. |

Strength:
1st universal disc player with no chroma bug, reasonable bass management, speaker distance settings, solid build, etc.; analog section upgradeable by Underwood HiFi, though it doubles the price...
Weakness:
Poor handling of burned DVD-R, and DD & DTS still better handled by pre-pro. Denon's new DVD-2200 appears similar, for even less money; and Denon's DVD-5900 adds HDCD, DVI, hi-res digital audio out etc., though it costs double. Stereo SACD playback sounds just like CD to me. This is a great universal disc player, and I echo most of the sentiments of the previous 4 reviewers here. I highly recommend this player, unless Denon's newer & cheaper DVD-2200 turns out to be just as good for less money. It plays CD as well as my NAD C541, both good for the money. It's video has been highly praised by most reviewers, and I certainly have no complaints there, though I was actually OK with the video of my year-old Toshiba SD-4800, which was much cheaper (but had FAR worse analog audio output, on CD e.g.). I was a little disappointed by stereo SACD, which sounded indistinguishable from CD to me, at least in my system; but *some* of the multichannel SACD's sound better than anything I've ever heard! I haven't listened critically to DVD-Audio, honestly, since there isn't much material I like on that format yet. Build quality makes the (chroma-bug ridden) Pioneers look like jokes, by comparison :) Downsides? I have to agree with one reviewer about the poor handling of burned DVD-R; they can be almost unwatchable, as the image jumps discontinuously. I also still use my old Toshiba to play those, since it works *much* better, for some reason(s). Also, comparing the DD & DTS decoding of my Anthem AVM-2 preamp-processor to the Denon's multichannel analog output reveals that those folks who think that using the decoders in DVD players so that they can use an analog multichannel preamp (with no processing) are really missing out on the sound quality of movies and DTS music! Also, as noted above, stereo SACD sounded no better than CD to me, for whatever reasons. I suspect these reasons are precisely why Underwood HiFi can get away with charging as much to upgrade this player's analog output stage as the player itself costs. Finally, if you need/want DVI, HDCD, and/or hi-res digital audio out, then you'll have to pony up for Denon's new DVD-5900 at double the cost. Don't get me wrong. This is a great player, and I am a satisfied customer, considering getting the DVD-2200 for my bedroom next month. But with all of this functionality for under $1K, don't expect "reference-level" quality in all areas, that's all. Similar Products Used: Toshiba SD-4800 DVD-A, NAD C541 CD, Anthem AVM-2 pre-pro. |

None that I can tell This is it! The all-in one DVD player that we've been waiting for: -Excellent video quality(crisp, detailed images without the "chroma bug" & instant layer changes) -Great sound on all 5" silver discs(smooth mids, silky highs, awesome bass) -Well-made (built like a tank). Compared to their previous Denon DVD players, it seems thyat Denon has finally "gotten it right". Best player for under $1k, IMHO. -HIGHLY recommended. none that I can see. I would like to start by saying that I thought all Progressive dvd players were the same. I am WRONG. This Dvd player is lightyears ahead of my last Pioneer product. The picture is incredible. I have a Mitsubishi HD Widescreen and It really is impressive. The SACD portion doesn't sound the way I would like it, but I think that has to do with my speakers. They are set up more for home theater. The setup is easy and the build quality seems to be top notch. |

Strength:
Picture quality, sound (all of the major sound formats)and enough memory to eliminate that annoying layer change.
Weakness:
None really. I've not had any problems with the unit as of yet, I'll keep you posted The Denon 2900 is a very good all around DVD player with excellent picture and sound quality. It has most of the sound formats anyone would ever need. The additional memory eliminates that annoying layer change you find with dual layer discs, which is 99% of the discs these days, which is really a big thing with me. The 2900's mechanical integrity seems to be outstanding so in my opinion this unit grades out very high. I don't do a lot of DVD-R so I can't speak on the compatibility issue. However, I would say depending on what you find important in your DVD player this could be the player for you. It's certianly doing the trick for me. Similar Products Used: Toshiba 9200 |
