Strength:
AL24 Plus Processing is MAJOR for excellent audio
Weakness:
Can get pretty warm after an hour or so, but Denon says this is normal hence the massive power transformers, and won't effect the units performance. So far this is true with both of my 3800's I've owned. This is my 2nd 3800, as I had to sell my first one for financial reasons, but, knowing I would buy another one as soon as I could afford it! This truely is an outstanding DVD player, and I've never experienced any of the problems mentioned on other reviews here.
Customer Service Denon's customer service is fair, but now that they have merged with Marantz, be prepared to wait if your calling about an issue with your current Denon product. Similar Products Used: Denon dvd-900,2800, 2-3800's

Strength:
Great video and audio, and plays just about anything - when working
Weakness:
Gets very hot and unreliable, until it cools down Bought the 3800 on the strength of reviews, and it is fabulous when it works, BUT as many pointed out it is very unreliable once it heats up aftyer 1 hour playing. Many CD or DVD just cannot be read until it cools down. It gets so hot on the top of the cover, you could fry eggs, but Denon say this is normal. I have returned it twice to Denon, and each time they say nothing wrong as it must be the quality of my DVD opr CD - but this is just not true, as they can be read when cold. Also time start up reading a CD can be 20 sec before playing starts. |

Strength:
Video quality. Speed of menu navigation.
Weakness:
Squeeze mode is flawed. This causes the user to manually alter the displays aspect ratio. This is a fabulous DVD player. It is much better than my previous players. The high quality DAC's on this player really shine and the Silicon Image processing is fabulous. Similar Products Used: Sony DVP-S7000, Sony DVP-S300, Panasonic DVD-XP30, Bravo D1, LG LST-3510A |

If you don't have the time to wait on DENON to fix it, then don't buy it. I personally would have waited twice as long. This thing kicks A$$! When I bought this player I knew what I was getting into. From reading reviews, I knew all about the freeze-up issue, the chroma bug, and the Y/C delay, but I also read about the how great the sound and picture quality were. I was able to find the unit on crutchfield.com marked down to $600 in there scratch and dent store. When I got it home I scanned over the whole unit looking for the damage, and all I could find was a very fine scratch on top of the player that looked like a white cat hair. Within 2 weeks I had incounter all 3 of the above mentioned problems, so I packed it up and shipped it off to DENON for repair. I waited impaitently for almost 5 weeks and it finaly came back home to me. Well, I have to say that it was definatly worth all of the trouble, and all of the waiting. THIS THING IS AUSOME! They were able to correct all 3 problems which would put this player at the very top of the secrets dvd shootout. It now produceses by far the best picture that I have ever seen from a DVD player on a rear projection CRT based TV and from what I have read it's replacement (DVD-3910) isn't going to top it (on a CRT). It has perfect black levels, and a nearly invisable layer change. If you have a CRT TV, and a lot of time to wait, you will not find a better player under $2K. Weakness:
Unreliable Tweeter sold me the 3800 as an open box for $475, I couldn't believe that I got a 20lb Denon high end DVD player for this kind of money. Well, got it home and it woulnd't play Toy Story II and it locked up on "Meet the parents". Read on the web about the faulty laser pick up problems which plagued the Feb '02 build date models and took it back to Tweeter. After 3 months, I finally got it back from Tweeter (who promised a 4 week turnaround) who had sent it to Denon. Rushed home, popped in Toy Story II, same result. Ok, maybe it just won't play this movie, I figured it was still such a deal that it didn't matter. I rented a basic blockbuster movie the next day and it wouldn't read the disk. I ended up returning it and sucking up the extra $400 for the Denon 2900. In the end, it just wasn't worth sweating it out everytime I rented something. I have had much cheaper players that worked without a hitch. I normally wouldn't feel compelled to write a review to effect the rating of a product but apparently, the 3800 is a real gamble according to numerous things I have read on the web. Sure you could get a good one but I am here to warn you, don't bother buying one of these unless you have warranty recourse. I wouldn't touch one of these babies on ebay or from an unauthorized etailer. My value rating is assuming you got one that works, my overall rating reflects my particular experience. Picture, build quality, did I say picture...i.n.c.r.e.d.i.b.l.e.!!! I kid you not!!!!
Weakness:
Only the needed factory fix on some players, but Denon is a champ as far as I am concerned when it comes to customer service..... I don't write reviews...hardly ever...but.... Got this player as a refurb...incredible price for a $1200.00 machine. Had a problem at first, as many older players had a faulty laser pick up, but it was easy enough to get repaired through the kind people at Denon. Even with that problem, the player is incredibly impressive. Weighing in at over 22 lbs, it is built like a tank! Plays DVD-Audio discs too, but haven't experimented with that yet. But the picture...I am only using interlaced...S-Video cable (Straightwire Silver S) through a Sony 32" XBR100-2(squared)TV, and the picture is breathtaking! I can only imagine how good it will be when I get a quality progressive TV some day! Really don't need one with this TV and DVD combo though now. Words, reviews, they can't describe how good this picture is. 3-D, filmlike,it's as close as possible to seeing an original film print....Denon did one of their best jobs building this player. Did not skip on the audio side either. Quality parts all around, and Denon is well known for their excellent sound. But it's the picture. Specs are all top notch...this player shares a lot with their top of the line DVD9000 player, priced at $3,500.00!!!!Has been recently discontinued, so snatch one up quick!!! The best under $3000.00 player out there in my opinion and the bargain of the year right now in DVD players. Worth every penny!!! Try to at least audition one.....you will be hooked!! Then start bargain hunting, but only buy from an authorized Denon seller....very important..check out their website. At these low prices it's a no-brainer!! just my opinion.........does it sound like I am crazy about this player?? The remote sucks. Should have been better for the dollar spent. No SACD.. Incredible unit. Never a problem. I understand the Laser Pick Up problem but Denon is a great company who stands behind there product. Picture is flawless. Received the CD firmware up grade from DenonJeff. (Avsforum) Has performed flawlessly. Never a freezing problem. Have watched well over 50 flicks and listened to many Dvd-A. Weakness:
Must be exchanged. Loved everything about the unit until recently. Great video and DVD audio. Solidly built. After 6 weeks it now has frequent lockups however that seem to be getting worse with time. Worse on superbit versions. Crutchfield has agreed to exchange the unit with a newer build in which Denon has supposed to have fixed the problem. We will see. |

DVD Video and Dvd Audio playback
Weakness:
Remote not backlit; glow in the dark buttons lose charge after a few minutes Finally, a higher end, single disc, progressive scan product from Denon that plays DVD Audio and costs less than $1500. The most compelling feature of the 3800 is the clarity and reproduction of DVDs; no halos, running reds, chroma bug, or anything I've noticed. Out performs Pioneer 47 series and the comparable Toshiba series that I sampled. Try some recent disney animated discs, which are a good test because of the color contrasts, and you will see. While DVD audio selections are limited, its playback is top rate. Playing of regular CDs does not match higher end units, but is adequate; I found the CD playback a bit flat. But if you are looking for a higher end unit that has great DVD capability, but also offers vibrant DVD audio playback and is adequate for CDs, sample the 3800 |
