The Chroma Bug has been fixed. Denon has a firmware CD available to fix the issue. It goes to show that Denon, unlike other manufacturers, care about there name and customers. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=c4bdac1306008bb7ce1d503f7a3d3f4f&threadid=155345

Strength:

Bulid, & audio

Weakness:

Price VS competiton. I like the Marantz dv-6200 better at $500..less.

I hope this posts because every review I've written lately after long thoughts on an honest review,NADA. This machine is well built, & has excellent audio as well. Video is good except for chroma bug.

Strength:

sound quality, fit & finish, lightening-fast point-on-disc access, overall fun to use

Weakness:

No SACD, slow “loading” times, layer transitions are not quite seamless; except for 1.5x forward speeds, choppy or inaudible fast forward/reverse on DVDs and CDs

I purchased the 3800 to double as a CD and DVD player, both to work in my current system and to accommodate future purchases such as a flat-panel TV and DVD-Audio discs. The 3800 as reviewed here is connected to: Denon AVR-5700, Mitsubishi 35” TV, Infinity Kappa 7 mains, Infinity Kappa 5 surrounds and dual centers, dual Velodyne F-1200 subs, Cinepro Power Supply III/20. VIDEO: Primarily an audio enthusiast, I am a neophyte when it comes to video. Despite calibrating my TV using a friend’s HT calibration disc, I had difficulty seeing some of the details in dark scenes on DVDs. I am not quite sure where the fault lies but I am optimistic that spending some time with the 3800’s Gamma adjustment will bring improvement. I am not sure if the “chroma bug” is something only seen via the Progressive Scan/Component Video facilities. But the picture as delivered via S-Video to my TV is very clean and crisp. None of the colors seem overdone. AUDIO: The 3800’s DACs, (only used on stereo CDs at this point), sound natural and musical. Highs and mids are detailed and silky with a sometimes eerie presence, and bass is punchy, smooth, and tight. I am looking forward to experimenting with DVD-Audio discs. I haven’t as of yet heard the benefits of the Pure Direct feature but with such a long delay between A and B in comparison, that might explain why. FEATURES / ERGONOMICS: Here are some of the 3800’s features I found most notable: zoom, abundance of video adjustments, ability to key the elapsed time on a track or disc and move directly to that point, ability to change some settings during disc playback, nice set of customization features. I am VERY glad that this player retained the A/B repeat feature long since deleted on CD-only players! Even though it could be better, the 3800’s remote with glo-keys and distinct menu keys is a welcome improvement from the cursed same-size-keys-clustered-together remote on my DV-414. The only thing I consider missing on the 3800 is SACD compatibility. FIT & FINISH: The aluminum faceplate on this 20-lb piece has a nice, sleek look and I like its clean white fluorescent display. The buttons have a good feel and the disc drawer glides quietly and smoothly. Only in dead silence when I am close enough to the player can I hear anything from the transport. Missing SACD compatibility aside, this is a great player overall. I would have

Strength:

Solid Build, Very Fast, Sound and Picture, Easy Menu Access.

Weakness:

Manual is sometimes confusing and the average novice may have a hard time following. Th remote isnt bad but could be a lot better. Key butons should have been backlite.

Incredible unit. Picture and sound very dimensional. I have seen no evidence of the chroma bug and from all research I have been assured that it has been corrected with this and the 9000 model. I have owned a few players before this one and I can say with total confidence that this is the best sounding and richest 3d like picture I have ever saw. Other eqipment: B&W Speakers cdm 7 and cdm 1, Velodyne HSG 12, and 65" Mitsubishi Diamond HDTV. ATI 1505 AMP, Sony ES 9000 series digital pre amp and separate analog amp for DVD-Audio.

Strength:

chassis, build, Pure direct, DAC's

Weakness:

None so far besides the Chroma bug. Can't get around that as of yet. Would rather watch Chroma then a flickering pioneer 434.

All DVD Players have the Chroma bug. Some cover it up with interpolation (Progressive scam) You will notice a flicker to most players that use this to cover up the bug. the 3800 is a much better player with the 12 bit DAC's and higher MHZ Processor. Plus pure direct mode has a noticable diff. when listened to on a high end system. (Krell, B&W). Kick booty player

Strength:

Build Quality.

Weakness:

Reds look terrible. Like the reviewer said about the 9000 model, it has the choma bug. You would think these dvd player designers would do their homework and prevent the obvious stuff.

Everything is great about this player except that it has the Chroma bug. Reds, like the Pioneer 47a, look really bad and jagged.
