Strength:

Good quality picture

Weakness:

Small buttoned remote, hard to read numbers on tray, slow disc read, I read on another forum that the disc change mech is a little flaky.

I bought this along with my Denon Reciever 3805 because I wanted an updated DVD player. No review but considered Denon a quality product. Overall I was Ok with the player. I think it was overpriced based on it's features.

Just over a year later DVDs are no longer recognized. Attempted cleaning without good results. I enjoyed it while it lasted but I'm staying away from Denon DVD products.

Strength:

Playback quality, especially audio. Playing music on CDs is brought to new levels with this unit.

Weakness:

Can't play CD-R, Very fussy DVD playback, Will hesitate if DVD is not perfectly clean. Although, I have not experienced this problem with CDs.

This is my first DVD player. Overall, the unit works well with DVDs, although the unit will hesitate if the disk is not pefectly clean. The picture and especially the sound quality is excellent. The capability to play CDs is outstanding. I have had several CD players in my time and nothing comes close to the warmth and depth that this unit delivers....I was blown away by the difference. I do find the unit slow and somewhat noisy as it skips or advances from one disk to another. I have always owned single disk units in the past and perhaps this is normal. I just hope it holds up to common usage. Only time will tell. In regards to the interface, it is easy to read and use although the remote is way too small and sometimes I will even try to use the thing backwards. I have actuall thought that the unit was not working or responding to the remote untill I realized that I had the remote backwards. Sure my fault, but this does not happen with any of my other remotes, so I will blame it on Denon's terribly small remote. I don't know if I would pay full price for this unit, but I am overall pleased with my purchase.

Strength:

Digital coax and TOS-link, multi-disc, can play DVD and CD in all five trays.k

Weakness:

"Pauses" during DVD playback, won''t play CD-R''s, counter-intuitive design, not solidly built

Well, first the good stuff: TOS-link and Digital Coaxial, multi function (DVD and CD), excellent sound and picture quality, easy to set up, realatively easy to use, quite running, OSD easy to understand. So why did I give this item a 2 star rating and a 1 star value? Simple: 2 stars because this is a below average product, 1 star for value because if you paid full price you got jacked. Allow me to elaborate: My problems started with something from inside the unit breaking off, a small piece of plastic. I found it in the CD tray. Unit is still running fine, but this brings up durability issues in my mind. The random mode is difficult to engage (multiple, non-intuitive buttos must be pressed) and is very slow. There can be up to 20 seconds between songs on random. Most importantly so far, this unit DOES NOT play ANY CD-R''s. So now I have to buy a new unit to watch my burned Jackass episodes. Grrrrrrrr. Another problem I have encountered is that frequently (maybe 70% of DVD''s) the player will pause briefly in the middle of a movie and then go on. Not a long pause, but certainly long enough to notice. My P.O.S $80 Sanyo DVD didn''t do this, AND it played CDR''s. Also, the disc tray on the DVM-1800 rattles a lot when you open and close it. This unit is nowhere near as solidly built as my old Onkyo 6 disc changer. The user interface (the buttons on the unit) are inconveniently placed and again, counter-intuitive. When loading CD''s the "skip disc" button only moves one bay at a time, so you have to press it five times to load five cd''s. Even my old Kenwood CD-404 would move two bays at a time for faster loading. Overall I would say that for the price I paid, this is an O.K. unit. If you can find it for $200 or less, go for it. But if you can afford to pay the $500 to $700 this unit usually sells for, you can afford to do some research and buy something much more useable and versatile than this. Sorry Denon, I would not reccomend this product to a friend or buy it again, even for $200.

Weakness:

Remote, numbers on changer platter. Does not start at beginning of DVD some times.

Remote (universal complaint since day one. Numbers on platter, does not start at beginning of DVD sometimes.

1St shot at a DVD last year. Coupled the 1800 with entry level AV 1801. Generally speaking nice setup for a small family room. And even with my (reduced) hearing, you do not need 100W Rms/channel to hear good decoded sound today.

Strength:

CD and DVD sound quality, change discs while playing cd, random mode, great picture quality

Weakness:

remote, no cd-r playback

After multiple trials of the above dvd players I finally kept the DVM-1800. It has everything I was looking for. It has great CD playback and is a changer, so I got rid of my old cd player. The random mode scans for dvds in the tray and then only plays the cds. You can also change discs while one is playing. DVD playback is very clear visually and the audio is stunning. The on screen menus are easy to control, and you don't have to read much of the manual to get going. There are two modes for video display, cinema and normal. Cinema is alittle softer, but normal has better contrast. I have had no problems with this unit, and after it was broken in the audio sounded a thousand times better than my old cd player. When playing DVDs the drive is loud when booting up and during menus, but once playback is started you can't here the spinning unless you are 2 feet away. this was a big thing for me because i think many movies have quiet scenes, and i don't want to hear the disc spinning (i don't know how people stand the sony players).

This unit is very comparable to the DVM-3700 but $500 less. I thought I was going to keep the DVM 3700 but then saw the dvm 1800 in the store the next day, United audio let me exchange it because the salesman didn't realize they had it in stock yet. The CD quality is comparable between the two but the 1800 doesn't have hdcd or headphone jack. Denon also cut out some of the video modes which was fine since I think normal is the best. I wish I could have kept the 3700 but the price difference was too much to swallow for the small amount of difference between the two.

I should mention that the first unit I took home had static coming out of the right channel, but I took it back to the store and they gave me another. The only concerning thing about this is that I initially purchased The dvd 1500 as my first dvd player but took it back because of lip sync problems, I hope DENON realizes they have poor quality control. But, the unit i have now is great.

I had the pioneer DV05 for a month and took it back because of the disc spinning noise. That player had great sound and dvd playback, supposedly the reference dvd player. The dvm 1800 compares vary closely with it in dvd quality, and sounds much better playing cd's.

weaknesses: no cd-r playback, unlit remote

Strength:

Beautiful picture, great sound

Weakness:

two units dead-on-arrival, questionable warranty

I purchased the first of two of these from Crazy Eddie. Took delivery, plugged it in, and it was great. Fantastic picture quality. Great (really great) CD audio quality. Remote kinda lame, but that's pretty typical.

Six days later and the thing is dead with some sort of catastrophic video DAC problem. There's a picture, but it's not a picture of anything recognizable; just psychedelic digitized noise.

Problem: Denon has (to me) the questionable "authorized retailers only" warranty thing going, and Crazy Eddie is not authorized. Crazy Eddie, to compound the problem, is anything but helpful, insisting that we just need to "get tough" with Denon to have it fixed. Thanks but no thanks, and beware being charged a "restocking" fee (!!) by Crazy Eddie should you buy and return something.

Took delivery on another DVM-1800 from The Good Guys. Dead on arrival - factory error code F894 (which nobody I spoke with at Denon could interpret for me). So that one went back in its box too (this time to a very friendly and understanding retailer).

I've bought lots of consumer electronic equipment over the past few years, and this failure rate is surprising. Not intending to give Denon a try at strike 3, I went out and bought another Sony.

Picture Quality, Sound and Easy to use.

Weakness:

Hard to read tray numbers on the changer/turn table.

I like this unit. I had a Denon 5 disc changer for audio for some time 8+ years. I never had a problem with that unit. I recently started to upgrade my system and started with a Denon AVR2801. Then decided to go digital to keep up with my friends. I have a buddy with the DVM1000, single disc player. It was and is a nice unit. I checked it out at the nearest Classic Stereo here in Grand Rapids I liked that unit and almost bought it but due to space limitations I decided on this unit, the DVM1800 as it plays audio too and it does it better than my older Denon CD changer.

I have not had a single problem with this unit. It gets used everyday and I play DVDs and CDs.

Strength:

Ease of Use
Good package of features
Piece of mind with Denon Brand.

Weakness:

No CD-R or MP3 Playback
(Could not justify the DVM-4800 for the price difference)
Yes the remote looks like it comes from a $99 unit.

I've been totally sold on Denon products for many years, from when I actually worked for an audio retailer. Now it is time for me to put a new system together and Denon was a logical choice.

I have had the Marantz for about 4 months and really enjoyed the 5 disc feature, but the unit was on loan from a friend. I had a single disc Toshiba but wanted the flexibility of combining a CD player as well as DVD in one unit.

The Denon unit is easy to operate, the GUI interface is pretty simple to grasp without reading the manual (bad habit) and Denon quality is easily seen.

If you want a DVD player this is a good choice unless you want CD-R or MP3 playback (I did but didn't want to pay more). Next year it'll be standard (oh well).
