Strength:

This is for the DVR5000 model. Its Dual Deck HighFi VHS and DVD. Plays (supposedly) CDR, CD, and MP3 data cds. Easy setup and menu for dummies.

Weakness:

Plays (supposedly) CDR, CD, and MP3 data cds. In other words it doesn't. Specs show that it will but the unit I got is going back tomorrow. It shows "NO DISC" when CD, CDR, or MP3 disks are inserted. It appears to have a difficulty keeping up on the DVD decoding. It has shown artifacts on each DVD I've put in it.

So far, this is not a good piece of equipment. I got it only seven days ago and its going back tomorrow for all of the reasons listed. I am going to try another replacment DVR5000. Could be I just got a lemon. The one button copy obviously does not work with 99.999999% of the DVDs on the market because of the Macrovision Copy protection that is implemented. So this function is rather useless. I may change my mind on this model if the replacement is in good working order for at least 6 months. So, I will give it a "benefit of the doubt" extra star;(

none. This is one reason I am unsure about its DVD playback. I am wondering if all DVD units show this many "artifacts".

Strength:

Nice lighted remote with handy joystick control.

Weakness:

Inconsistencies in quality. Repeated skips, long and exaggerated pauses (some 30 min.)

We are on our third, yes third Go Video DVR 5000 DVD/VHS player. The first unit would not set-up, never wen into "auto setup" as indicated in the manual and would not go into manual audio set up period. Every DVD skipped at various stages of the movie. Returned for even exchange. Unit 2 did not go into "auto setup", but the manual setup worked relatively well. No skips until about half way into Hell Raiser; then half way into Me Myself and Irene the disk paused "disk error" and would not go beyond that spot. Returned for even exchange. Unit 3 went into "auto setup" beautifully, video-audio-channels-everything went very smooth. Started watching Hollow Man and about 3/4ths through, huge pause, tried stopping taking out the DVD and restarting...would not go beyond earlier stopping point. I called Go Video and spoke to a technical supervisor who had "never heard of such problems", suspected our disks were bad until I assured him they were as new or newer than the player itself and were not rentals. He suggested unplugging the unit for 2+ hours to "reset" and start over. Did that, actually let the unit "rest" for 12 hours. No imporvement so we called again and they suggested all of our disks were scratched and if they weren't, then we could send the unit-at our expense to Arizona for a diagnostic check. The tech supervisor also informed me that DVD's often do skip and it's just the way it is, but the skips shouldn't prevent us from enjoying the movie. WhhhhasssssUp with that? do all DVD players skip? I would like to have an all in one unit...just not Go Video's.

Strength:

This will be my second review of this unit. Originally, I was pretty sure I received a bad unit form A Plus Digital. After weeks of haggling with the manufacturer (Sensory Science) they exchanged it for another unit. It's strengths certainly lie in the all-in-one philosophy which this unit was constructed as. Set-up menus are user friendly in my opinion and for the price I now believe this unit is a very good buy.

Weakness:

Push in pins for the speaker connections are always weak if you want to tie in two cables into the respective speaker output. When using my vcr the unit won't put out any bass when connected from the sub woofer output jack (low-level connection. I have this unit in a rather small room so the fact it only puts out a max of 40 watts per channel is of no concern to me. Unit does get warm and needs good air flow, therefore I took it out of my stereo cabinet and placed it in the open air.

Initially I had written a very bad review on this unit when I first recieved it. Eventhough I have had this unit a few months now, I just recently hooked it up to put it through the trials (watched lots of movies). This DVD/Amp player makes a great bedroom unit and as an introductory unit into DVD players and Dobly Digital 5.1 surround sound systems it is very good. I do like like the fact when hooked to an auxiliary unit (VCR) that it will not put out any bass when hooked from the sub output jack (it does work with a high level connector). Otherwise, I am happy with this unit which works well as an introductory unit as well as a complementary unit for a TV only geared with S-video input jack. I own the WEGA KV24 which is an excellent tv with only S-video inputs. So for me getting a higher end DVD unit with component or optical inputs wouldn't make sense. Enjoy.

Strength:

Nice size and all in-one-system makes it a compact and clean system. Easy on screen setup menus. Nice remote.

Weakness:

Received faulty unit from A PLUS DIGITAL and they wouldn't take it back and told me to send it back to the manufacturer for warranty repairs. The subwoofer output and Right Front channel speakers do not work.Subwoofer output doesn't work either. No local repair shops, need to ship it to Arizona.

I am really dissappointed in purchasing this over the internet and especially through A PLUS DIGITAL. Those people running that outfit are frankly a bunch of jerks who sold me a faulty unit, packed it incorrectly (only one side of the box had about 2 inches worth of packing material... that is unacceptable)and will not take it back for an exchange of another unit. I caution you from purchasing from A PLUS DIGITAL, read their policies first and you will realize it is better to buy locally or from another internet retailer. I have used this product for no more than maybe 30 minutes and most of the time it has been to try to troubleshoot it. Though the setup is pretty straight forward, I am pretty dissappointed and wouldn't initially recommend this unit and purchasing from A PLUS DIGITAL. I am sending the unit to Go Video who only authorizes repair work from their site in Arizona. When I receive it (hopefully in good working order) repaired I will write another review and hopefully it will be a good one. As for now it gets an F!
