Strength:

Video Fine Processor, GUI interface, Looks

Weakness:

In 2 years, 2 discs would not play. Not bad compared to some, but not good enough.

Not really a review but some info I received today:

Dear Sir or Madam,

'Carnival of Souls' meets all universal DVD authoring specifications
and should play on any player. However, Criterion has received
information directly from JVC admitting to problems with their
players. JVC informed us that many of their players will not play
DVDs authored using a certain software program (Scenarist NT Ver.2).
At this time, any DVD titles that are authored using Scenarist NT
Ver.2 software (including Carnival of Souls) will have this
playability issue. All players produced after 02/03/99 should play
titles authored with Scenarist NT Ver. 2 without any problems.

JVC asked us to provide the following instructions to JVC owners
encountering this problem:

JVC offers a firmware upgrade to customers experiencing the playability
issue w/ 'Carnival of Souls'. Please have the unit sent to one of the factory
service center listed below:

I haven't found a DVD yet that doesn't work.

Weakness:

Does not play Video CDs that are made on CD-R media; however it will play originals

I have had this player for quite some time now, I bought it when it was first available in Germany at the local Post Exchange. I haven't had a problem with a DVD yet, it plays all of them; however, when I got my DVD player it came with a 220 volt European socket attached to the power cord.

I'm not sure what difference that would make, but I am suggesting that they might have had quite a bit different quality standards over there as over here. Also my DVD player is totally region free, I have German DVDs that I play every once in a while that does not work on my other players.

I never really liked this player that much due to the fact that I couldn't play Video CDs made on a computer, seeing as this is the primary medium that one of my family members likes to send out home movies.

Over all I can't say that I have had a bad experience with this player and I am watching Scary Movie right now, and I have never had to reboot the system or got a DVD locked into it. It is a bit curious though

dts,remote

I have owned this player around 2 years now.Wish I knew about this site then.If I did i would not have bought it.I got some free DVDs with it so I wasnt totally robbed.Mine started locking up about a year after purchase. It seems to happen about once a month. It is hard to navigate through menus with the remote. The enter button on joystick is useless. My latest problem is that I recently bought a Dolby Digital/DTS reciever. When the JVC reads the disk and sends the enhanced audio signal it sends a VERY LOUD Noise through my speakers. What a piece of garbage. Please let me know If there is anyway for me to get in on the Class-Action suit.I feel JVC owes us all a new player!

The laser assembly!!!

My laser failed after 23 months. The JVC authorized shop said it would cost almost as much to repair as the player's replacement cost.

I called JVC Canada Head Office service dept and they agreed, as a PR gesture, to install the part at no charge if I paid the usual labor charge. I ended up paying $48 instead of $290. (Of course, I wouldn't have paid $290 - the player would have been used as a boat anchor.)

All this happened just this past week, so I have no idea how long the new laser will work. Apparently these things fail unpredictably and for no good reason, regardless of brand. An extended warranty is a must when buying a dvd player.

Apart from the laser problem, I have found the player to be excellent - audio, features, etc.

DTS, wouldnt play some DVDs (Scary Movie)

I was pretty happy with the player when I just had Dolby Digital capability. I recently decided to upgrade much of my audio equipment, and bought a new DTS capable receiver. I was really eager to test the sound difference with DTS. I only had two DVDs that had DTS, and I was suprised to find that one disc didnt work. I thought it was the disk and ordered the Eagles DTS DVD. It also didnt work. I tested a friends player on my system and figured it was the DVD player... then I went to this site. Holy crap. Everybody is having the same problem it seems. It pisses me off that my waranty came and went and I probably had this problem all along. How do I get in on this class action lawsuit?

This DVD player worked great at first.

Weakness:

I have owned this DVD player for aproximately 18 months. After approximately 6 months I had problems with it freezing up and now it is starting not to accept certain DVD's. The same complaint as everyone else. It doesn't read from the beginning. Tried emailing JVC, no response. Calling JVC toll free number is worthless unless you have 8 hours with nothing else to do. I would like to throw my hat ring for a class action suit. Please contact me.

Don't buy it.

At the time; component plugs, optical output, DTS/Dolby Digital processor.

Weakness:

It died after a year and about 8 months

The player itself worked fine. Solid controls on the panel and the remote was decent with nice joystick control. The player takes a bit longer than other players to load up a DVD, but the sound and picture quality are very good.

After about a year and a half, the player started skipping and ditzing out. I took it back to Best Buy to have it serviced as per their service plan (see! They have uses after all!) today. Doubt if they can repair it. Most likely will get a shiny new one out of this whole thing.

EEPROM Resets, NO DISC Message, Won't play any DVDs

I'll join you all. Worked fine initially until I played the Arlington Road DVD and it locked up in the extra features. Found the EEPROM reset procedure on JVC website and that solved the problem. Had to do this numerous times over the last year. Now today, 2/3/01, it seems to have died as others have stated. I get the NO DISC message and the EEPROM resetting doesn't work anymore. Won't play audio or DVD discs. Piece of JUNK! I emailed them, but guess I will get no response. Count me in on a class action lawsuit! No more JVC for me!
