Doesn't work. Features too complicated.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. I thought all my problems were because I bought this as an open box discount at Best Buy, but I have experienced the same problems everyone else here describes. "NO DISC" the machine says.

Problems started within 6 months of purchase, but I found if I left it on for a while there was a chance it might work. Not anymore. This piece of garbage won't read any disc...I'd love to throw it through a window at JVC.

Calls to JVC were no help. They told me to take this $300 piece of crap in and pay for a repair. Repeated letters to JVC didn't get the problem resolved...they never even replied.

I won't buy another JVC product again.

I think the reviews below pretty much summarize the poor quality of this player. Shame on JVC for producing such a defective product. Bring on the lawsuit.

Strength:

Many special fetures you only get on more expensive units. Overall never had a major problem playing ANY DVD's

Weakness:

cheapy remote, Can't play rerecorded DVD's

Very good quality, And the complaints I have read about pixel freeze-ups and lockups only happened once and a software reset fix that for good. The secret to eliminate alot of those problems is to run lukewarm water over the disc and wipe outward with a paper towel and I have ner had any problem since.....don't forget about dvd's that have to change layers after a certain time which has a slight pause but is normal.

TOO MANY TO MENTION

Well, it's like this. Back on 01/02/00 I gave this DVD player a 5 star review and man do I feel like a jerk now!
Right after I wrote that review the player started acting up. I had it approx 6 months. First some DVD's would start skipping and I would get lots of pixalated images. Then the player started locking up on certain DVD's and I would have to reset the EPROM to get it to work again. Then the straw that broke the camel's back was when I purchased the Disney movie "Dinosaur" and it wouldn't even play the movie at all. That is when I decided to junk this player and buy a new one. I purchased the Sony DVP-S360 and it has worked flawlessly since I purchased it over a year ago! So, anyone even thinking of purchasing this DVD player should reconsider and stay as far away from it as possible. That's unless you like throwing your money away? If anyone knows about a Class Action Lawsuit please let me know.

Strength:

Attractive, component video output, good sound quality

Weakness:

Remote, slow response in opening menu of DVD's, won't play certain DVD's, no CD-R playback, breaks after 2 years

I did my research before buying this unit, but nobody at the time (except JVC, perhaps) knew that this unit would stop working after two years. That "feature" alone basically means this player deserves a rating of 1. However, I did get two years of use out of it, and my overall impression is this: stunning audio quality, nice cue/review features, crappy remote, slow processing of DVD menu screens, no CD-R support, won't play certain movies.

To sum up, my new player is a Pioneer DV-C503. It cost me over $100 less and has more features. The only thing it doesn't do as well is cue/review.

Seeing as how I did get two years of use, I'll give it a 2.

Broke after less than 2 years

Well, I went to do some research on this product as my DVD player recently went on the skitz and I wanted to check out some repair options. I happened to stumble upon this review board and I now realize that JVC obviously sucks. OK, I thought buying digital products would lengthen the life of them due to less wear n tear. Looks like I'm a victim of JVC's crappy product development. $250 down the tubes after 1 year and I'm back shopping for another one? I've be watching VHS for awhile.......not that bad?

Worked Great for 2 years

Weakness:

Breaks in 3rd year, doesnt pla cdrs as specified.

Well I have the same problem. DVD skips and freezes 50 minutes into a movie then when I turn it off or reset it it reads NO DISK I dont know if it gets too hot or what. I am just very disappointed that it would do this. I don't think I will buy JVC again. I would if they would fix the problem because I have always recommended there products, but the fact that it broke 2 years into it just stinks. Very sad and disappointing JVC.

craftsmanship

I had bought this player as a component in a rack system I am building. I had the player boxed up and did not use it that often. I had a computer DVD player that I had used instead. I had used the player after I had sold my computer DVD player.. I had only played a few DVD's throught the player before it had stopped working, by this time the warrantee was up and only covered the parts. It had cost me $106 for labor on a replacement IC board and lazer. Since then I have had no problems. I am worried about the JVC products I have.

Strength:

Component video out and built in Dolby Digital & DTS decoders allowed the salesperson to represent this as a quality unit.

Weakness:

Difficult to navigate the menus with the remote. Serious design flaws which cause the device to become a paperweight.

Ditto what most of the reviews here have said. Worked "ok" for a little more than a year, then problems gradually became worse until the machine became completely unusable.

This unit has sat around unused for more than a year now. I have a hard time bringing myself to dispose of it because I received so little value for the money I paid.

Mostly, I'm disturbed by the fact that JVC has not stepped up to addressing their responsibility for such a clearly faulty device. Seems like they think if they ignore the issue maybe it will go away. Maybe it will. Their customers certainly will.

Count me in as another potential member for a class-action lawsuit.
