Strength:
Good Visual Quality.
Weakness:
This is really a horrible player. Do not get this player. It is now out of production and it is not worth it. I went through 4 and they finally just sent me my money back. Similar Products Used: RCA and Toshiba DVD players. |

stops working immediately after warranty expires! Just had to add my $.02 and concur with the rest of the majority of people who reviewed this shoddy excuse for a machine. Have purchased much JVC equipment over the years and these devices have caused little or no trouble, but this DVD player has given me nothing but trouble. Even when it DID work (first few months), the picture would frequently freeze or become "pixilated". After about 6 months, it completely stopped playing dual-layer discs. Now when I place a disc in the machine the display reads "no disc" and the disc sqeals and spins. If you go to JVC's support website, you'll receive some BS about holding down the "on-screen" and "title" button while unplugging the machine. Completely useless. I tried calling their tech support line. All I got was a confused, uninformed stooge who simply gave me the East Coast office's address. JVC does not respond to e-mail, and so don't waste your time. If anyone is talking class action suite, I may be interested. $250 may not be worth it though. Just bow down and buy a $ony i guess. At any rate, the JVC customer support has proven worthy of this wretched product. |

Strength:
Good video quality, nice features
Weakness:
occasional lockups, 1 bad laser pickup The player worked great for six months then completely died. I took it into the service center, it took about three weeks to replace the laser pickup but since then it has worked great. The only other problems I have experienced have been occasional menu lockups and problems with the menu highlights. Besides these problems the player has worked fine, great on layer changes, has played every disk its been fed. |

Strength:
It looks nice
Weakness:
garbled picture and freeze-ups, joystick on remote tricky to use My problem seems to be the typical one. The player seemed to work fairly well for the first 6 months or so. I had trouble with a few discs, but nothing that an EEPROM reset or disc cleaning wouldn't cure. Lately though (I've now had the unit about 10 months) I have been getting lots of freeze-ups, pixilation problems, etc. Now I cannot watch any movies; Audio CD's still work. A WHOLE LOT IT WAS A GOOD STARTER DVD PLAYER BUT NOW I KNOW ALOT MORE THAN I DID.SAME PROBLEMS THE OTHER REVEIWERS HAD.SEEN LOCK UPS,DISTORTION IN THE PICTURE.ONCE WHILE WATCHING SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.AFTER WATCHING 2 AND HALF HOURS OF PRIVATE RYAN AND GETTING REALLY INTO IT.JUST AS THE LAST BATTLE,THE STAND TO SAVE THE BRIDGE.ALL OF A SUDDEN THE PICTURE GOES FROM WIDESCREEN TO FULL SCREEN THEN GOES TOTALLY GREEN AND THEN WONT RESPOND TO ANY COMMANDS.I HAD TO SHUT IT DOWN.BY THAT YOUR SO PISSED OFF,ITS NOT WORTH STARTING UP AGAIN.MY ADVICE GO WITH SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE BETTER YET JUST WAIT FOR DVD-AUDIO.IT WILL BE OUT VERY SOON.STAY AWAY FROM JVC ALLTOGETHER.THEY SUCK Similar Products Used: NOTHING THIS IS THE BOTTOM |

OPERATION PROBLEMS, JVC CUSTOMER SESTARRVICE, PURCHASED IN FEB 99 AND WAS QUITE HAPPY UNTIL THIS SUMMER AFTER PLAYING.....CRUEL INTENTIONS AND IT HAS BEEN DOWNHILL EVER SINCE. PROBLEMS WITH THE MACHINE NOT PLAYING CERTAIN DISCS GOT WORSE SO JVC HAD ME TRY THE RESET WHICH DID NOT WORK. THIS FALL PROBLEMS WITH LIP SYNCH AND SKIPPING OF DVDS STARTED SO I SENT IT TO AN AUTHORIZED JVC SERVICE CENTER IN NOVEMBER AND I STILL DO NOT HAVE IT BACK. THE OBVIOUS SOLUTION FOR ME WAS THE SONY DVP-S7700 WHICH WAS ORDERED TODAY. THE EXTRA $S SPENT WILL BE WORTH RIDDING MYSELF OF THE AGGRAVATION OF THIS ORDEAL. IF I EVER GET THE 501 BACK IT MAY MAKE A GOOD PAPER WEIGHT. GOOD BYE FOREVER JVC. Similar Products Used: SONY 300, SONY 550 |

Strength:
Makes a nice stool for my kids to stand on while brushing their teeth.
Weakness:
Does not pass the pluge color. Remote joystick is tricky and sometimes unresponsive. This P.O.S. is now going back to Sears for the third time. They won't replace it until it brakes a 4th time. I am basically having the same problems that everyone else here has already listed. The laser unit has been replaced for what will now be the third time. The remote is cheap and awful. I have since bought the Sony 360. This player was $100 cheaper and is night in day in performance and quality. Similar Products Used: Sony 360 |

My JVC XV-501 DVD player had momentary drop-outs during movies from the very start (2 months ago). This being my first DVD player, I thought it might be scratched DVDs that I rented. Now, I feel sure that I received a defective unit. The unit acts if it can't read the disk halfway or so through several differnt movies. It keeps trying and occasionally throws up a partial and/or garbled picture and the sound occasionally chirps as the receiver tries to lock on to what it getting. |

I bought a 501 5 months ago and I loved it. It worked perfect for 3 months. After the 3 months, movies started skipping, DTS dropped off, etc. I bought Cruel Intentions, Office Space and some other popular DVD titles - they lock up the player and the only thing you can do is unplug it from the wall to get the disk out. I took my player to the JVC repair centre and they couldn't fix it. I went back to the stereo shop and we tried these DVDs in all of the 501s in stock, all of them were flawed (we tested 4 of them). Those of you who have gave this player great reviews, watch more movies. It wasn't until I put about 120 titles trough my player until I discovered that something was wrong. Like I said, I loved this player when it worked. I called JVC corporate to get a heads up, and they told me that some disks will not work in the 501. What kind of excuse is that? STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLAYER - IT HAS SERIOUS PROBLEMS, I'M INTERESTED TO HERE FROM ANYONE WHO CAN GET CRUEL INTENTIONS OR OFFICE SPACE TO WORK IN THIS PLAYER. |

I had my 501 since May and I like it alot. Great features and performance. It seems that every brand has it's own problems. I had occasional lockups and problems with DTS movies (Though as listed earlier JVC has a fix if you insist and I will.) But if you think your having problems playing movies. At least you can watch the Matrix now, think of those poor Samsung, some Panasonic and some Sony owners not being able to see this Kick Butt movie. So it seems no one is immune from the occasional not being able to watch problem. Did you try a differnet copy of the same movie. |
